This week I finally got the news I was waiting for, the new macbook pro retina is revealed.
So here I am eager to give away $2500 for a new laptop when I get a cold shower at Mac store when a boy says:
- "You can only get a macbook pro with portuguese keyboard if you buy it in Portugal!"
hold on, isn't Apple famous for its customisation service?
It looks like I was wrong but then again I'm in Sydney Australia, the end of the world where what is normal anywhere else is just unthinkable here. And really, I thought to myself "the boy certainly doesn't know what he's talking about...", So I decided to call apple information line Down under (133 622 just in case you need it) and after waiting 10 min. this fellow picks up my call and I ask :
-"Hello, I'm a software developer and blogger for the Portuguese community and I would like to know how much more would it cost to get the new macbook pro retina with a Portuguese keyboard?"
-"It's a very good question, but you can't !" - First of all what's good about it? not the answer!.
-"Doesn't apple provide a keyboard replacement service?"
-"We haven't done it for a long time ..." - (I guess it's such a long time you don't remember how to do it, you should try the Youtube it has great videos showing how)
-"So isn't there anyway to get a laptop with Portuguese keyboard?"
-"You can if you go to Brasil ..." - (RIIIGHT!)
-"What about in the US?I'm thinking of going there in the near future in about 3 to 4 months ..."
-"Do you want me to check?"
-"Well it looks like you can get it with spanish keyboard..." - Suddenly we are talking about spanish (a totally different language), I'm actually looking for portuguese but I'll go along.
-"Ok can I get a macbook with spanish keyboard in australia?"
-”Because we only receive macs with US keyboard, but you could get a skin for you keyboard in Portuguese..."
-"Ok! Does the apple store sell the keyboard skin in Portuguese?" - I know that isn't an apple product
-"So from what I understand, the only way to get a macbook pro with Portuguese keyboard in Australia is to fly to a Portuguese speaking country buy it there and return!"
bottom line, this raises a lot of questions :
Does apple advocate racist policy?
Is Apple Australia too lazy to ask for different language keyboards?(taking into account the amount of immigrants)
Certainly we're all aware of Steve Jobs' evangelism of User Experience, yet my experience as a user makes me feel handicapped , just because I'm not allowed to have access to a product that is widely available else were in the world!
