A Life transformed by travel
Larry Darrel was leading what could only be described as a conventional life in a rich western country. On the outside, Larry appeared to have a terrific life. However, on the inside he was a mess, he was miserable.
Larry's issues came about due to a toxic work place. Infected by the petty battles that humans engage in, brought on by a society that values social and financial position over positive engagement and empathy to others.
After years of tolerating the environment, the situation started taking it's toll on Larry. One evening after work, Larry started to feel a stabbing pain in his chest. The pain grew so intense that he lost consciousness. His family assumed it was a heart attack and called for an ambulance. However, tests did not confirm this diagnosis and the cause was determined to be a panic attack.
After treatment with medications and therapy, Larry's mental health improved. However, his work environment didn't. The same issues plagued Larry. It was inevitable, Larry relapsed and was put on a medical leave. However, this only made things worsen. He was out of the toxic workplace. However, his identity was so wrapped up in his job that when that was removed, Larry didn't know who he was anymore.
So how did Larry overcome his difficulties? A radical shift. He needed to change the channel. He packed his bags and took to the road to find himself.
So, what's it like to volunteer abroad? It's a rewarding and enriching experience. Interacting with the people, experiencing the cultures, and most importantly, sharing skills and experience to help make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate people in this world. We in the west don't fully understand or appreciate how privileged we are. We are rich beyond the imagination of people in the developing world. We are the 1%.
Savvy Brain Academy
Savvy Brain Academy (SBA) is a private school institution started by local humanitarians and human rights activists who joined forces in July, 2020. The school is currently operating at Bujora village, Mwanza region in Tanzania, East Africa.Â
The school offers high quality, early childhood and primary education, following the Tanzanian education curriculum and promotes vocational, social and entrepreneurial skills, through training programs offered to young people from underprivileged backgrounds free of charge, thereby giving them related skills to help them create jobs and be productive citizens.Â
The school invests in social work and educational support activities and promotes “voluntourism” to people from around the world. This program is an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the children and families it serves, at the same time learning about the culture of Tanzania. Through this service delivery model, the school endeavours to prepare children and young people to transform their lives and fight poverty and illiteracy in their communities.
II. Vision of Savvy Brain Academy: Creating a generation of innovators, entrepreneurs, critical thinking leaders with integrity to turn challenges into socio-economic opportunities for the wellbeing of the impoverished communities in Tanzania.
III. Mission of Savvy Brain Academy: Ending poverty and illiteracy in order to reduce socio-economic inequalities by empowering children and young people from poor backgrounds and low to middle income families through quality education and care promoting innovations and solutions.
IV. Motto of Savvy Brain Academy: The school’s motto is “Reaching Excellence Together – Joining hands and fully involving every potential individual, institution or organization, school staff, volunteers, parents/guardians, local and international friends to form a unitary force in the fulfilment of the vision and mission of the school in order to see the children and young people we help have a brighter future, make socio-economic achievements and deliver both themselves and the society out of poverty and illiteracy.
V. The impact Savvy Brain Academy: Savvy Brain Academy wants to bring a new approach in teaching and caring for children and young people in order to create a generation of intellects equipped with excellent education that bring innovative and sustainable outcomes to different challenges facing communities in Tanzania.
VI. The Core activities at Savvy Brain Academy:
• Offering Pre and Primary education: We teach children daily at our school according to the Tanzania curriculum. Children we help at our school learn according to their ages and are divided into different groups in accordance with the education policy of our country, Tanzania. We run a kindergarten program and primary education on a daily basis following the Government school year plan. The main subjects we teach are English (reading and writing), Kiswahili (reading and writing), Mathematics, Healthcare and environment and Sports and Arts.
• Most Vulnerable Children’s Care: The main reason of the existence of Savvy Brain Academy is to give hope to the needy children (i.e orphans, HIV/AIDS victims, abandoned, disabled and other vulnerable) living in poverty to have access to education, nutrition, medical support, shelter and care so that they may fulfill their dreams and live a decent life in future. These are children who face any form of hardship, violence and are hopeless for a better future. In partnership with the Social Welfare Office and various Non-Governmental Organizations helping children in different parts of Mwanza region of Tanzania where we operate, we select, visit and analyze the children in need of help and enroll them at our school and study free of charge. At our school, we provide them with education on daily basis following our Tanzania curriculum, food, medical care when they get sick, counseling, prayers and on weekends or holidays we do home visit. As the school still struggle to stand very well on its own feet financially and as the number of kids in needy increase daily, we have then dedicated our time to look for kids’ sponsors, donations or contributions from different part of the world to help us covering the needs of these children in their access to education on top of the little support we give them.
Freedom and Unity
“Freedom and Unity“ is the moto of the United Republic of Tanzania. Located in East Africa, it is a former colony of Germany. The country gained independence in 1961 and joined the British Commonwealth, of which it is still a member state. The population is composed of about 120 ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups. Over 100 different languages are spoken in Tanzania, making it the most linguistically diverse country in East Africa.Â
The national language is Swahili. This language is used in parliamentary debates, in the lower courts, and as a medium of instruction in primary school. English is used in foreign trade, in diplomacy, in higher courts, and as a medium of instruction in secondary and higher education.
