@tarnishedsoul
I sometimes find it hard to write novels, so I write long poems first. Any screenwriting tips, pretty please?
Only sometimes? You lucky person
Ok serious response. Screenwriting is an art form. Too many attempt it without understanding it ( I know I did )
There are certain things that once experienced you can ignore. But early on you should follow.
The ten page bomb. Within the first ten pages you need to give your audience a compelling reason to continue watching. A car chase or some reveal or a huge plot point. Slow progressions are for novels not movies.
The three act structure. You need three acts. They should be distinct and easy for a reader ( to get produced youāll need readers to fall in love with your script ) to follow.
And the last major tip is the hardest one to fulfill. Emotional truth and honesty. Sometimes you just need a character to do something. If it is not in their nature, they just would never do either find the truth of it or find another way.
Hope this helps dear Anon. Have a gold star to help you createāļø
The author whose voice I love most passed away last year and I never got to email her.
What would you have said to her if you had had the opportunity?
Say it here and if I am to meet her before you Iāll happily pass on your missive
Here is a gold star to sit beneath as you ponder my offer āļø
You could start a thrift blog called Tarnished Bowl.
I was thinking of starting a new blog of just my most snarky comments calledā¦
Tarnished troll
What ever happened with your English teacher?
She was married and our affair was agonizingly pure. She wept when I left the school accusing me of abandoning her
A few years later we bumped into each other in NYC She insisted we have dinner ( along with her husband). He was utterly fantastic intelligent and kind and I got a little angry with her for cheating on him.
She went to the bathroom at one point. Her husband said ā Iām quite jealous of you. She loves you in a way she never can love me. I accept you because you bring her a peace she needs like we need air to breatheā
They left that night for parts unknown and I never saw either of them again.
Life is complicated abd occasionally very messy. Please accept this Gold Star āļø dear anon to bring you a little light
I saw some scenes from of The Railway Children. A kid named Jim breaks his leg in a train tunnel, and kids let him recover at their motherās house. Before he goes back to boarding school, he shyly gives the eldest daughter his address to write. Itās very cute.
One of my fav little movies is about a NYC writer and the rare book seller in London. They write letters back and forth and in a way fall deeply in spiritual love. They never meet. Itās profoundly beautiful and a little sad. They were soul mates. But the world span on a way that kept them apart
The book and movie is called 84 charring cross road
Youāve made me a little maudlin but in a gentle nice way dear anon. Please accept this gold star as thanks āļø
In storytelling, how do you increase stakes for plot goal and conflict to the goal?
Interesting question dear anon.
You have a main story arc and thatās normally how you plot the story to get from point a to point b. Now it may not be natural or honest to force conflicts or change the speed of arc
But good story telling is like spinning plates. Focus on the arc but donāt forget the off shoots The tiny moments that may not even drive the arc but layer in richness ( or add conflicts )
For example in Romeo and Juliet the main story arc is the star crossed lovers. But the richness comes from secondary characters and their arcs. Mercurio the Nurse. Tybalt. Take those characters away you donāt really affect the story arc. But you lose so much tension and intentions etc etc.
I hope, dear anon, that this lengthy answer illuminated your path and along those lines please accept a gold star to help āļø
Just remembered your profile pic is the Cheshire Cat
I have an affinity for both Alice and cats
If I were Taylor Swift, a gold star charm on a chain would be on its way by tomorrow.
If you were ms Swift youād be far too busy to have a lovely chat with me.
No I am quite happy with you being a Charlotte dear anon
Thatās super cool you got to play Tybalt. I loved the Romeo and Juliet movie with Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting.
Olivia Hussey was only 15 when she filmed it. And she gave a truly stunning performance. And hers is by far my fav screen Julietās.
I do love to keep you company. I havenāt acted. My great grandfather did, though. He left Europe and did stage acting in America.
It might be fun to play Elena Gilbert. Or maybe your cat Charlotte.
Elena Gilbert is a fairly fascinating character. And I did enjoy that show
Would you like to be an indoor cat? With five or six places you would like to curl up in? Would you have a favourite toy? A little stuffed mouse I should think.
Abd Charlotte definitely suits your spirit. Dear anon. As good a name as any. Maybe better than most.
I think you would need a gold star āļøinstead of a bell for your collar
Which characters did you play in Shakespeare?
Iāve done quite a bit of Shakespeare Having played Mark Anthony in Julius Caesar. Iago in Othello hamlet. But my fav role was Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet. I played him as the hero. The only noble character in the whole play. Arrogant but for all the wrong reasons.
Iām always attracted to complicated chatters who end up doing the right thing even if it takes them a lot of effort to get there. Hearhcliffe in wuthering heights .sydney Carlton in tale of two cities.
Have you ever acted or wanted to act and which characters i if yes dear anon? Please accept this gold star as a thank you for the company tonight āļø
What was your teacher like?
She was wild and worldly and oh so fragile. None of this I truly understand Knowing her was like trying to grab fistfuls of smoke.
Neither of us loved the real other. In me she saw sadness. A tortured artist Not the child I still was And I saw every traffic character in her
You make me puzzle about things dear Anon. I like to think of you in your bed pondering my answers regardless here is a gold star to thank you for your company āļø
Do you ever leave LA?
All the time. I need nourishing and some tender loving care. LA is not conducive to that end.
Here is a gold star to light up your own travels āļø
Do you have a favorite book genre? What keeps your interest?
At the risk of losing all my remaining cool points the BBC put out a list of the 100 top novels and I had read 95 ( up to 96 now) Blame an English education and falling in love with my English lit teacher.
But what sort of books? I love books that turn the norm on its head. Absurdist books. But I also love historical fiction. And a well crafted spy novel. I even like the occasional fantasy or sci fi story.
Interesting question Anon. But I fear I look quite arrogant talking about myself so much. So Iāve shown you mine⦠your turn
Have a god star to lend you light to read byāļø
What kind of interesting shoes can someone wear that are comfortable too? Asking because your type wears interesting shoes š
Just recently bought my summer shoes. Very comfy converse all stars.
My ātypeā dear anon? I was once touring Shakespeare and the costume shop forgot a pair of tights for me. Only discovering this in Columbus Ohio.
So I went to the mall and a shop for bigger women. And they did indeed have tights in my size. Embarrassed I said to the staff that I felt odd. ā no worries. Your type come in all the timeā
It was only half way out the mall that I realized she meant transvestites not actors. Iāve never been back to Columbus.
Here is a good star yo help you find comfy shoes of your own āļø
