You nod, “Yeah. I’m good.” And you feel good, too. Just slow down. Listen to the sound of her voice instead of your own, tucked away behind that ever-present tone in your ears.
“Promise me you’ll say something if you want me to stop.”
A short laugh escapes you, “I promise. Not like I can hide my stupid body’s reactions, anyway.”
As Mirabelle goes back to your braid, she pouts, “Your body’s not stupid!”
You tease her, “If my body’s not stupid, then it’s my mind right?”
“NO!!” She doesn’t shout but instead speaks very firmly.
“Well, it’s gotta be one or the other!”
“It’s neither! It’s-” She scowls at you, looking straight ahead in the mirror at your smirk, “One of these days I’m gonna tease you back and there’ll be nothing you can do about it.”
That’ll be the day. And you’re looking forward to that day! Because you’ll be living with her! Probably won’t feel real until you get back to the house, the brand new house that the whole town built for Bonnie. And for-
“Ow!”
“Sorry!” Mirabelle’s just about finished unbraiding your hair, and she only yanked once. Not bad! Tasha’s a bit clumsier. Well, a lot clumsier. Mirabelle probably knows how to handle your hair better, you bet your texture is similar to hers. Based on what you can see, anyway. You haven’t touched her hair. That’d be weird. (Oh yeah? And what’s she doing to you right now? Silly Pétronille. That’s what they’ll call you from here on out.)
Aaaaand we’re back! The penultimate chapter! Lots of plot threads pay off here. Well, just one plot thread. Shame Nille and Bonnie’s house is in shambles, no?

The front door jostles from the outside, doorknob wiggling in place. Someone's trying to get inside! You whip around as your heart gallops beneath your chest and you blindly reach for the nearest weapon, a frying pan will do, and-
“Woah, hey!” Tasha has her hand on your shoulder, “It's okay, Pété. I invited them!”
The wiggling doorknob stills and the person outside knocks instead, “Pétronille? Sorry, I forgot you lock your door. No judgement! …Okay, just a little judgement. Not weird at all!”
That sounds like Ori? The chief of your construction crew? Your boss? What are they doing here? You put down the frying pan and take deep breaths.
Now everyone is awake, save Bonnie who’s assumedly asleep in their room. Odile groggily asks, “Shall I shoo them away? This feels like a real get off my lawn moment.” She snickers.
You thank her for the offer but now that you've calmed down you can answer the door without a weapon in your hand. Goes against every instinct in your body, your skin is crawling and your palms itch. But, Ori is safe. They always have been. What could they want so early in the morning?
You open the door and see-
You blink and lean back. Ori smiles before you, and behind them is… Everyone?
Ori’s brought the entire construction crew with them, armed to the teeth with wrenches and hammers (and of course Inella brought the blasting equipment, she never leaves home without it) and every tool under the sun? Next to Ori is their wife, Rhoda, the town apothecary? And there’s Mallow the grocer? Arloe the postwoman? Nurse Ogawa, the Housemaiden that administered your hearing test? (you had some unkind things to say to her yesterday morning. Why is she here, or any of them?) A bunch of other Housemaidens? Yatorence the shopkeep? Alannia the baker?
And… Half the town?!? Their names all come to you at once, there must be at least a hundred people on your doorstep!! You feel the Saviors crowd around your back, they’re just as confused as you are.
They're… they’re not here to take Bonnie away, right? To drive you out, a mob on the warpath? You grip the doorknob tight, ready to slam it shut as if they all couldn't flood through the gaping hole in the wall of your bedroom. You want them all to leave. You need to run. You need to grab Bonnie, no time to pack, no-
Chapter 13! A Petronille fic where things often go from bad to worse! This time around, Nille tries to fix her mistakes as Bonnie ruminates in their room. But I know why you’re here, you wanna see an excerpt! Here’s a fun little dream that Nille has mid chapter :P

“Bonnie!” You shout and scream as you run through the forest. Fruitless, they’re nowhere to be found and the trees are closing in. Your hands hold the bloodied hammer illuminated by moonlight, and your body drifts away in the breeze. You have to find them. Nothing else matters.
At last the wind drops you in the burning sands, your feet ache and swell but you have to keep running. The shoreline is seared by the boiling sea but if you squint at the waterline you can see it: A ship floating on the waves.
Bonnie stands in the crow’s nest, waving frantically. You look through your monocular and see them smiling as they wave. As clear as day, they shout to you, “It’s just a fishing boat! I’m fine, see!” And they jump off the high mast to dive into the sea.
The ocean splashes so high and a tidal wave careens toward you, swallowing you up. You cough and sputter and your ears become waterlogged. Your vision is darkened and you hold your breath. Dim lights slowly pulse in the distance, so you swim toward them as hard and as fast as you can manage.
And a light gets closer and your lungs tighten and you can’t breath and you gasp for air and- you… you can breathe? That means you can scream!
“Bonnie!!! Where are you!!”
You spin around the sea of stars and finally see them. Bonnie’s floating, reaching toward a bright light, warm and shining like the sun. You reach out, you need to keep them from getting burned, you need to keep them safe, you’ll get burned instead, you-

The veins in your arms are still throbbing. Every muscle in your neck is stiff. You want to burst out of your skin and scream. Maybe you will, soon.
You carried Bonnie all the way home from the lighthouse, gently holding them close and shushing them. Their face was scrunched and their breaths were erratic. But, at least they're asleep. Stirring, dreaming and struggling. You put them to bed and asked Tasha to keep an eye on them while you interrogated the Saviors. Time to get to the bottom of this.
As you exit Bonnie’s bedroom you're greeted by the people you were starting to trust. People you still trust. Your chest is tearing, ribcage pulling apart in two different directions. They ask all at once,
“Is Bonnie alright?”
“Boniface, are they-”
“What happened? Sif explained but I-I don’t understand.”
You hold up your hand to stop them. Fiery breaths fume from your nostrils. Twisting your words out from the gnarled roots in your throat, you command them all, “Sit down.”
They oblige. Odile sits at the head of the dining room table, notebook open and pencil in hand. Isabeau and Mirabelle plant themselves on the couch. He's twiddling his thumbs and she's biting her nails. Siffrin stands at the open backdoor. He's staring out to the careening waves and the static outline at the edge of the horizon. A tear where an island should be. He doesn’t sit.
“Hey!” You call out to him firmly, “I don’t care what’s out there. Sit. Down.”
They jump and scurry to a seat next to Odile. She looks up from her book and lasers a vicious stare at you. She’s no threat. None of them are. You’ll go down swinging, get in a few punches, take the hammer to nail again and again until your task is done.

Chapter 11 and we’re back to P é tronille’s perspective. Bonnie’s in trouble and P é tronille doesn’t know! Ah! Here’s a snippet, I hope you enjoy :)

Tasha itches her cheek and whispers in your ear, “Don’t I get a kiss, Pété?”
You roll your eyes and quietly say, “No, I’m still mad at you.” You’re not.
“No you’re not.” She leans her head onto your shoulder and delicately asks, “Um… is Bonnie home yet?”
You nod toward the open backdoor. Tasha leans and looks inside, practically beaming at the sight of Siffrin and Bonnie as they cuddle on the couch in a blissful nap. (Could you imagine if you saw this yesterday?) Tasha grabs your shoulder with her big hand and shakes you as she desperately bites back a squeal. You lightly smack her arm to shush her and she just shakes you harder. Stopping herself from bouncing in place, she seems almost as excited as you were when you first saw Bonnie and the saviors walking up the beach yesterday.
…That was only yesterday. Your ears ring a little, the left one more than the right. Tiredness washes over you like a wave. Tasha’s still shaking you, though. They can’t take their eyes off your sibling. She’s gonna start crying. Then you’ll start crying. Less loudly.
With the grace of an ox, Tasha wraps you up in a tight embrace. Under her breath, desperate to scream, she whispers, “They’re okay!!”
“They’re okay!” You mimic with a smile. It’s true, and you’re still amazed by that fact, but you’d like to not be crushed. (Still, you missed Tasha even if she wasn’t gone very long.)
(Do you think she’ll be proud of you?)
(For opening up to the saviors so quickly?)
(After the years it took to open up to her?)

(She won’t be angry, right?)
You can’t think about it, no time - she grabs your cheeks and presses her soft lips against yours. You stifle a moan, your heart is thundering. How easily she makes you feel like a giddy schoolgirl. If she could break down your walls, of course Bonnie and their new family could as well.
Tasha pulls back and you lean forward a little, eyes closed and longing for more. They smile and say, “I can’t wait til Bonnie wakes up!”
One last Bonnie chapter in my Nille-centric “Bonnie comes home” story! This is a big one, longest chapter yet. But! Quanity is not quality, you be the judge! Here’s a totally normal and mentally-healthy excerpt for you. Have a great weekend!

“Bonnie!” Alani leans over from behind the counter and spots you, her light hair tucked behind a bandana. “I heard you were back in town! Pétronille’s been worried sick!”
Spotted. Put on a smile like Nille does and make it seem like you’re having a great day. “Hi Alani! Do you have anything for, um,” onetwothreefourfivesix- “For six people?” Nille, Dile, Frin, Za, Belle, and Tash. “And… um,” You pull out your pocket change and place it on the counter, reaching up on your toes. “For this much?”
“You’re buying something for the Saviors? Oh, I’m not gonna charge you anything!” She turns around and opens the metal door of her brick stove, “I’m so glad they kept you safe this whole time! Well, I’m glad they saved the world too!”
What? You lean back a little and feel your face scrunch, “I helped! I helped a lot!”
“I’m sure you did!” She comes back with a big loaf of… something. Looks kinda like a tall pie? And square? She grins as she wraps it up in foil, “Now, what does everyone like? Sweet? Savory?”
You grit your teeth but don’t bother yelling at her. It’s easier to yell at people when you’ve got your family behind you and right now you’re alone. You list off the flavors everyone likes or dislikes. No spicy things for Za, Dile likes simple things but will eat anything you cook, Nille loves sweets, Frin hates croissants, Belle loves fruits and veggies, Tash eats lots of meat. Honestly, they all like a lot of things.
“Oh! That’s gonna be tough.” She folds her hands on the counter and leans down to match your eyeline, “What about you? What do you want?”
“NOTHING!!” You shake your head and correct yourself, “I-I mean, I’ll eat whatever. Do you have anything they’ll all like?”
Please tell me a little about your Bambouche OCs from "Big Talks for Little Ears" 😊
Yay!! Okaaay!!! I had a lot of fun creating the characters for Bambouche, even if the story is mostly focused on the main cast, so this is a good excuse to talk about them!
Here's the first character we met in chapter 6, Stefani! Bonnie's nickname for him is "Ani". He's sort of Petronille's boss, it's more that he's the one everybody defers to at the docks since he's worked there the longest and is the most familiar with how things run. The dock workers are paid by the fishermen whose nets they help reel in and by the sailors whose cargo they load and unload. He's the one who does most of the upkeep of the docks.
His name is Poterian, I think he's probably mixed Poterian and Vaugardian or something like that. He's shirtless because he wants to show off his top surgery scars, he's very proud of his body. I think he used to be a lot fatter and more muscular, but he's getting up there in years which makes it harder to maintain that physique. The towel is for sweat.
I based him on my grandfather, who he looks and dresses pretty similarly to. Well, except for being trans. A lot of the other characters in Bambouche probably are as well, it's just harder to tell.
Stefani is probably the person Petronille trusts the most. He's known her and Bonnie since they arrived in Bambouche and was the only one willing to give her work without asking questions. For as carefree and unserious as he seems, he's very emotionally intelligent and realized pretty quickly that Petronille probably didn't want to talk about her past and didn't really trust the adults around her. He calls Petronille "Little Girl" because he's known her since she was one, and Petronille cheekily calls him things like "old codger" in return. He's the type of person to always look on the bright side of things, because life's too short to be dwelling on all the things that suck, and he wants to uplift people when they're feeling down. I like him very much and I hope you do too!
Here's the second character we meet, Estimé (Timé, according to Bonnie). They're the one who knows the most about what's happening with Bambouche's environment. Ecology is probably their special interest. They don't talk much unless it's to talk about ecology, and they generally prefer the company of animals to that of humans.
They're from somewhere else, but have been in Bambouche long enough to consider it their home. Bambouche seems like a welcoming place to outsiders since Petronille and Bonnie were able to settle in there comfortably, but Estime has always felt a little distant from everyone. They were a sailor before coming to Bambouche, but nobody else knows anything else about them.
It would be nice if they could strike up a friendship with Siffrin, but Siffrin hasn't had the best experiences with people from his home, sadly. He has a lot of trauma to recover from first. But maybe someday...?
Here's Donathilde, the ice cream woman! Bonnie, who calls her "Thilde", knows her pretty well, what kid doesn't like ice cream! We don't get to see enough of her to learn about her personality, unfortunately, I can't go into the same amount of detail about every person without adding 100k words to the fic, sorry. But I did develop her a little. She's really passionate about creating ice cream and loves experimenting with new flavors. Most of her ice cream is made from local fruits. Her ice cream stand is down at the docks, which gives her the opportunity to chat with everyone--she's a very social person I think. She gets kind of bored when there's no one around to talk.
She has a wife and a couple kids, but neither of them are around Bonnie's age, so Bonnie doesn't know them very well.
This is Ciprien, the boulanger. Bonnie calls him "Pri". He seems pretty rude, which he is, and he doesn't like talking to people. If you're in his boulangerie, you better be buying bread! He has grumpy old man vibes even though he's not that old.
Despite his gruff demeanor, his actions show him in a different light. He gives people more bread than they ask for, sometimes, if he thinks they need more, and always sends out his best loaves first. You should never thank him for it, though, he'd probably just hmpf and say he clearly heard you ask for 6 rolls, not 5. And then shoo you out of his boulangerie.
We also met a couple characters back in chapter 4, though Bonnie was too focused on getting to Petronille to spend much time with them. Honesty, their personalities aren't that developed, but I think their designs are fun. Here's Old man Marchal. That's what Bonnie calls him for some reason. They're polite to the other saviors, but that's about all we see of them.
And here's Mx. Amaury. She's old, and something of a grandmotherly figure, though she doesn't have any children of her own. Her partner has passed so she's somewhat lonely now, but Bambouche's community is close enough that she has friends who stop by. They probably make cookies for Bonnie and Petronille, and Bonnie and Petronille probably bring them food from time to time as thanks.
There are also a few characters we haven't met yet, Bonnie's classmates! Bambouche is a small town, so there aren't a lot of kids their age. Bonnie only has 4 other people in their class, though one of them isn't here for reasons. It's not really spoilers to talk about their personalities a little.
First we have Franceline. She gets along decently well with Bonnie, though Bonnie thinks she's too childish.
Then there's Lucrèce, Bonnie's friend. Xe's the one who taught them how to run fast and is very smart and curious. Probably knows a whole bunch of useless fun facts.
And finally we have Giles, who Bonnie doesn't like very much. He's kinda smug and his parents are implied to be sort of controlling (and possibly conspiracy theorists). He doesn't get along with the other kids in class at all, but butts heads especially with Bonnie.
Thanks for the ask, I had a lot of fun talking about everyone. I'm sad we don't get to see more of some of these characters, but oh well! At least I can write about them here!
