My night vs day painting assignment
It wouldn't let me post yesterday but happy BIRTH to @stephenbelford 💕
Last one for character design- my colonial serial killer lady! She is terrible at being sneaky, but thankfully she lives in a town of idiots.
Bone portfolio, featuring my garbage bone salesman OC.
Layout assignment. A mysterious lady in a mysterious place/I never know wtf I'm drawing.
Protagonist/comic relief/villain assignment. Was very insp by the old films Maury was showing us.
Let's do another character today!
This is Billiam, he is a clown who is afraid of children but he's trying his best.
Who's ready for some CoNtEnT. Semester is over and I feel possibly human again. Anyway here is my OC. He lives in the forest and gives bad life advice.
Hey tawny love the work rooting for you in the art world😂 I was wondering if you knew any schools like CG master academy or concept design school that I could go to. I was considering still applying to Sheridan but deffering for a year to go to an academy to work on foundational, illustrative, and concept design work but I dont know of any ones that produce good results. Any reccomendations?
Aw thank you! Anyway, I... don't. I never looked into those cause they were too expensive. Sorryyy. And good luck!
aah tysm for replying!! hmm with the loans, would you consider sheridan to be cheaper or at least have the same costs as other universities in north america? since cad to usd: sheridan’s tuition fee is like 21k;; sorry these feel a bit like heavy questions,, i’m actually an american who’s never even been to the US so everything about like financial aid and all that, while i’m probably applicable, kind of confuses me so much @@ but i rly want to study in north america lol TT
Bruhh tuition and living expenses are so much cheaper here, for a dedicated art school. All the art schools in the US are private so just tuition is anywhere from 40-60k USD, it's unreasonable. Not even including living expenses. The tradeoff is the financing part though. You can get grants and fed loans in the US, but even so, I think you'd still end up taking out the same amount in private loans so ugh. It depends and all, but I can't imagine anyone could get that much from grants n stuff.
Another option could be a state school with an animation program, which could be cheaper than Sheridan, depending on your situation. I went to California State University Northridge for a year, and it was free for me (I'm poor lol.) The professors were fantastic, but the program itself was garbage. They really only care about passing people through and getting them graduated and out of there, not actual art training. So the classes weren't specialized enough to really go in depth, they had too much to try to fit in. Along with the fact that most people are commuters, so there isn't the sense of community among the students, which I am really enjoying here. And most of your classes are general education classes, not art. Sheridan only has one gen ed class per semester, the rest is all art, so it's so much more focused on what we're here for.
I think most state school programs are like that. CSUN was supposed to be one of the better ones. And you'd probably be paying out of state anywhere, since you're living internationally? I don't know how that works. I got a much lower tuition rate being in-state, along with state grants so I don't think it'd even be cheaper for you to do a state school.
Anyway, Sheridan was the most financially plausible option for me, being unsatisfied with CSUN. And the program is great, I really feel like I've made a great choice going here. What you could do is apply to some American schools too, and see what financial help they end up offering, and then choosing. Just remember to apply to FAFSA. It's so stressful and confusing figuring all this junk out, I know.
hey tawny! if you don’t mind me asking, as an american, how do you afford sheridan’s school fees? I was researching them and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of financial assistance provided. :( they also have a deferment only status for federal student loans so i’m just a little overwhelmed on wanting to go to sheridan but not being able to afford to pay nearly $30k per year.
Yeahh, I went ahead and sold my soul to Sallie Mae, they're the only ones who do loans for international schools. Just for tuition though, my parents are being ridiculously generous and paying for my living expenses somehow. I'm basically trying to live as cheap as possible- no eating out, lots of roommates, you know. I got an academic scholarship from Sheridan though, which was 2k CAD, so that's some nice rent money. I know other americans who get a little money from Sheridan too, again not a lot but everything helps. I just accepted that I'd have to take the loans out. I also have some previous fed loans on deferment. I-it's fine. It'll be fine. Right. Yes.
I'm sorry I have no magical money secret to bestow upon you.
Hi tawny first wanna say I love your work and the fluidity of it I hope to be as loose and expressive one day😂😂 but I wanted to ask so you got into sheridan on your third try it seems? But did you try applying to Art Fundam. The first times? I'm applying this year and I'm dying to get in any advice would be helpful😁😁also please hire me when you make it big
Thank you so much! Expressive is goalsss. I didn’t apply to art fundies the first time, no. They take everyone who applies, so it does make a great backup. Fundies is pretty pointless though, except for having access to school resources like life drawing, tutoring, and just benefiting from being in the art environment with like minded peers, which is actually a pretty big boon. So if you can afford it, I would say go for it.
For general portfolio advice, I feel dumb giving advice cuz I’m no one but ok. Looking at past portfolios both accepted and rejected is a great place to start, get a feel for what they’re looking for. I did that. Oh for the boards, do a lot of different expressions and poses, I heard that and was like oooh right duh lmao. Be hella cartoony for that one. Other than that, just practice all the time– life drawing, sketchbook drawing, practice in the different portfolio areas, do master studies, draw everything. Drawing everything will improve your ability to draw anything. Draw actively and analytically, don’t just copy. Start now, improve as much as you can til February. Take it seriously but don’t kill yourself, just make art a priority in your day to day life.
