Day 6: Romeo & Juliet (1996)

This was my second watch of ‘Romeo & Juliet’ and oh. My. God.

I hadn’t realised previously how beautiful of a film it is, it’s so beautifully shot, it has impeccable colour grading, costuming, casting. Absolutely everything is just perfect.

Favourite Quote: “Oh, what’s in a name?”

Rating: 9/10 - get Leonardo OUT OF HERE

Day 5: Jennifer’s Body (2009)

I’m gonna be honest, I don’t even have a proper review this time - all I have to say is that this movie is camp as fuck.

Favourite quote: “Do you buy all your murder weapons at Home Depot? God, you’re so butch”

Rating: 7/10 - wasn’t bad but I didn’t adore it

Rewatch?: Yes (at a sleepover or such)

Guys, I’m gonna he so honest now - American Honey was so bad, it made me want to never watch a movie again so I did, in fact, skip yesterday BUT today we’re locking back in 😈

Day 4: American Honey (2016)

I went into this film thinking I was gonna watch a beautiful coming-of-age movie about struggling teens and, after having watched it, I can now confirm that that is not what ‘American Honey’ is. The whole film just felt massively anticlimactic and like I’ve just wasted three hours of my life. Only redeemable qualities were:

1. Having Riley Keough in it (I loved her in ‘Daisy Jones & The Six’)

2. Having beautiful camera work that made it feel very realistic

Favourite quote: “I feel like I’m fuckin’ America”

Rating: 3.5/10 - felt very anticlimactic, and just far too long for what it is like it’s almost 3 hours long and I feel like nothing even happened?

Day 3: Obsession (2026)

To have watched ‘Obsession’ is to become a changed woman - I will never be the same. Inde Navarrette will be this year’s phenomenal breakout actress, mark my words. Her ability to capture emotions and facial expressions was so incredibly compelling and I have never before been so drawn into a film like this.

I will say, though, all the men in this film pissed me off. Bear couldn’t have just left her be, Ian couldn’t listen to his best friend when he needed his help. Sarah’s character was fun and I enjoyed the fact that despite not being a main character, she was still well fleshed out, with aspirations and dreams (and I did, in fact, predict the car scene).

I believe that for a horror movie to be a good horror movie, it has to have levels of sadness to it to be truly incredible and ‘Obsession’ did just that. The idea of being conscious in your body while being possessed by some kind of wish is so devastating and, after Bear’s death, Nikki’s realisation of what has happened to her as she sits in his house covered in blood was such an incredible scene with unbelievable acting and beautiful camera work.

‘Obsession’ will be going down in the history books for all to remember.

Day 2: Interstellar (2014)

I am not particularly interested in TV centred around space purely because I’m just not into science (especially physics) but watching ‘Interstellar’ had me more on the edge of my seat, hugging myself than any other film ever has. Not even ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ made me cry this hard…

I never especially wanted to watch (and like) ‘Interstellar’ because I’d always written it off as a ‘movie bro’ film so I’d assumed it just wasn’t actually that good nor intellectually compelling but, after having watched it (all three hours), I can confirm it is VERY compelling and actually has a lot of meaning behind it!

Love. Love is everywhere. Love is everywhere, all the time. And that is exactly what ‘Interstellar’ is trying to tell us. It’s the “it’s you - I thought you were dead but it’s you.” And I think that is why I loved this film so much - it perfectly encapsulates the feeling of love. You can feel it in Cooper’s search for the unknown, you can feel it in Professor Brand’s search for the saviour of humanity. And, of course, you can feel it in Cooper and Murphy’s relationship. Their love for each other was and is so deeply engrained in the universe that it literally travels through space and time to remind the other that they’re still there.

Favourite quote: “Do not go gentle into that goodnight"

Rating: 9.5/10 - it's so damn long and a little confusing but damn.

Day 1/? : Poor Things (2023)

At the beginning of the film, I felt that Bella’s behaviour was very much an allegory for children with special needs (although I did feel that certain things may have been slightly insensitive and/or offensive in this case) but by the end, I realised that Bella is a near-perfect portrayal of neurodivergent women growing up in a world that is not built for them.

When Bella leaves London, every other place she travels is made to look fantastical and dream-like, which is used to show how Bella sees everywhere bar her home as perfect - as a place filled with liberty and freedom. This dream, however, is crushed when she sees Egypt and its poverty, and the people who live here. After Lisbon, both Egypt and Paris bring her back down to Earth where she reconciles with reality and begins to snap out of her dreams.

When she returns home to London to visit her father, she asks Max if he’d like to marry her. In being the one to ask this, she takes control over the patriarchy in a sense, and becomes a great symbol of feminism and women empowerment. Bella does not ask for permission from anybody, and scarcely seeks approval from others, showing how she now has control over herself, where she lacked such control at the beginning of the movie.

‘Poor Things’ is an excellent representation of feminism, motherhood, father-daughter relationships, neurodivergence in young girls and women, and what it means to be a woman. Bella Baxter is everything but a man, and that is what it means to be ‘poor’ in a time like such.
