Neil Perry was, for better or for worse, alive. A frank discussion was had once Neil was able to get some food and drink in him - even though he still felt like he’d been hit by a truck, but one would suppose that trying to commit suicide by pills and vodka would make a person feel that way. A frank discussion about the fact that Neil was not interested in being a doctor at all. He wanted to act and he didn’t want his father to dictate his education for him anymore. He also admitted that he was gay and in love with a classmate, his roommate, Todd. All of this information didn’t go over too well, but Neil’s parents decided that his happiness and well-being mattered… 

And unfortunately, Neil’s drug problem meant he would be missing out on his junior spring semester at Welton in favor of getting him healthier. Which itself meant outpatient rehab and therapy back home in Annapolis where his parents could keep a close eye on him. It was hard to pack up his stuff and say goodbye to his friends for now, but he knew he would be back. This wasn’t the last Welton had seen of Neil Perry, that much was for sure. That, and his father felt it was of the utmost importance that Neil become a graduate from Welton. Arrangements had been made so Neil could still study - albeit independently and online - and it wouldn’t interfere with rehab and therapy.

That night, they had all gone out for dinner, just the Dead Poets Society, before Neil and Todd had retired to Todd’s room. The fact that Neil was getting the help that he needed made coming back to their dorm room, their escape from it all that much easier given that he was no long there. It’d made the distance bearable, even though Neil wasn’t really gone. He’d left him with a love letter, an actual lover letter because in typical Neil Perry fashion, he never half assed a thing. In it, he’d told him that he loved him. 

So now, they were a thing. They’d even somehow gotten the approval of Neil’s parents, which prompted Todd to give them a promise to take care of their son. Can I borrow a pen? had never before earned him such strange looks before. “I-I’m glad to hear that.” Wyatt responded, a bit breathless. “It means a lot that you came.” 

There was a softness, a boyish quality to Simon’s face that only made Wyatt all the more endeared, as he knew that underneath was a body that was pure man. He chuckled at Simon’s statement. “Yeah, I like seats too.” Guitar case in one hand, one of Simon’s hand in his other hand, Wyatt showed him to the booth he’d had all but in name reserved for them. He slid into the booth, putting his guitar case in the bench seat across from them, hoping Simon would know to sit next to him. He laughed at Simon’s teasing. “Mmm, I think the fanclub’s off tonight.” He joked. “I don’t reckon they’ll be too happy to hear about me dedicating songs to a man… Even if he’s really gorgeous.”

“I would have never stood you up. It’s not my style.” Simon assured him, wondering if that sounded like he was a bit too eager to meet Wyatt. He had been, don’t get him wrong but he didn’t want it to sound pathetic. But was it really pathetic? In all honesty, who wouldn’t want to meet  someone like Wyatt? And if you said you didn’t want to, you were lying. You’re the worst liar to ever lie actually. 

Simon looked down at their joint hands, his eyes meeting Wyatt’s as soon as he looked back up. He squeezed at his hand lightly, just his own way of processing this as reality. This was really happening for him. Wyatt let them off to a booth, one that had both of their names on it. “Woah, fancy.” He commented on the paper before he noticed Wyatt put his guitar case on the seat opposite of him, meaning they would have to be seated together. “Lucky me, I didn’t really want to be mauled today.” Simon laughed lightly. “That might be true, or they might actually be into it. Wyatt blushed at how Simon was clapping for him and whistling. God, Simon was even cuter in person. Finally finishing his brief set - two songs, which was fine by him, because it was always a start - he thanked the audience once more. “You guys are always so great. Thanks. He was coming his way. Simon felt himself freeze up, it was like everything slowed down. Like, I’m half expecting a group of girls with your face in t-shirts to manifest and run me down.” Simon teased.

Neil chuckled, nodding along playfully in agreement: “Always. Very much about the protesting. Reminds me of that meme where it’s, like, the dude holding the sign and it says ‘down with this sort of thing,’ very funny stuff.” Neil’s lips quirked up into a smirk when he noted Todd calling Charlie Chuck. Very few people could get away with calling Charles Everett Dalton II ‘Chuck,’ but Todd Anderson was definitely one of those select few. He chuckled again, shaking his head a little. “The Henley Hall girls would give you hell, and darling, you do not want them on your bad side.” Neil had seen it firsthand,as Charlie had previously a penchant for having one-night stands with Henley Hall’s “finest virgins” before he was quickly blackballed from nearly any area of the Henley Hall campus. 

A smile grew on Neil’s lips when Todd all but agreed to come visit him over the summer. The idea of spending time in the sun with Todd was all too appealing. The idea of exploring Annapolis with Todd, going for walks holding hands… It was ridiculously tempting. But many months loomed between October and when school let out in early June. But in how Todd was kissing him, Neil was starting to feel better about the months in between then and summer vacation. It was also exciting to hear Todd say he was crazy about him, the feeling of returned affection was invigorating in a way that no high has ever made him feel before. “Oh, I am so glad to hear you say that.” Neil breathed, the words falling out of his mouth before he could stop them. 

The hallway was empty at this late hour. Most boys were out - home for the weekend or had snuck off-campus for a party - and those that remained were probably in their rooms or the room of a friend. He then laid on his side of the bed, looking up at Todd and giving him a grin. “Come to bed, won’t you?” He teased.

Todd smiled as he looked down at their joint beds. It was poetic in a way. Their beds so different, yet there they were together. Just like the two of them. Todd’s line of sight went back to that of Neil, who sat down on the edge of his bed as he undid his shoes. Todd let out a small laugh as he watched him undo his costume, no longer was he an angel. But in Todd’s eyes, he’d always be one. He snapped out of his thoughts by the sound of Neil’s voice, that smile of his making his stomach flutter. No, his entire body was fluttering at the sight of his smile. He nodded, letting him know that he’d be joining him in bed... well, as soon as he managed to get out of this suit of armor.  

It took a bit of maneuvering but he eventually managed to take off the layers of his costume, laying them off to the side. This was no time for order, no. He had the object of his affection in his bed. He could clean up after himself tomorrow. He kicked off his converses, looking down at their joint beds once again. Once he laid down, whatever was going to happen, was going to happen. His first experience of any kind of anyone. His heart was pounding in his chest at the thought of that.  Typically, it’d be out of nervousness but this time, it was out of excitement. He was more than ready for this. So Todd got onto his bed. Not only did he get onto his bed, he slowly crawled his way over to Neil, lowering his head to press his lips back against his. He took his time with this kiss, not afraid to get passionate and kiss him like he’d always wanted to Neil.

He shifted them slightly so that he was now hovering slightly over his roommate, his hands soon finding both of Neil’s and intertwining their fingers as they continued to do what they’d wanted to do out on the front yard. Wyatt had his guitar case splayed open on the table of the booth he’d come in and laid claim to an hour earlier, and was tinkering with the strings, ensuring their tightness when he heard the door to the cafe jingle as it opened. He looked up instinctively - as he had been for the past half hour - and grinned when he saw him. 

It had to be Simon. It was the lips that he recognized, even from almost across the room. The lips from a picture Simon had sent, grinning in a shot of those washboard abs. And goddamn, Simon was definitely even cuter in person. He was about to wave Simon over when his name was called by the cool MC for the Open Mic: “And next up, we’ve got local favorite, Wyatt Christiansen!” 

Lugging his guitar over, Wyatt grinned out across the audience. “Hi, all. I’m Wyatt. And yes, I am not American as you may be able to tell. I’m originally from New Zealand.” He said before adding, emphatically: “Not Australia. New Zealand.” He chuckled a little, taking his acoustic guitar and putting it onto his lap as he began to strum a few chords. “Uh, I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to play for you all tonight, but there’s someone pretty special to me in the audience right now and, uhhh, yeah… This one’s for him.”

Clearing his throat a little, Wyatt began to play…

As the song finished, Wyatt beamed at how well the song was received. Even though he had obviously changed the pronouns in it, people were applauding. Wyatt’s eyes searched the crowd until he met Simon’s eyes and he smiled before saying: “Thanks so much. We’ve got such a great audience tonight. I think I’ve got another good cover for you, feel free to sing along if you know the words.” He started the chords to the Friends theme song and people laughed appreciatively, making him grin before he started to sing again…

Simon walked into the venue, nervously making his way around as he wondered where he should sit. Not that there was plenty of places to sit. The place was packed to capacity and while the occupants weren’t the typical pig skin throwing assholes, he recognized several of the faces that belonged to the theater department and they weren’t exactly the nicest people either. You see, they said that college was a time where people were too concerned with their grades to be cliquey but that wasn’t exactly true. 

He came to a stop when an MC took the stage, announcing the next act. Wyatt Christiansen. His eyes landed on the gorgeous guy who took the stage. He was male model gorgeous. Why was he taking the stage at some kind of open mic? Shouldn’t he be posing for Hollister right now?

Simon clapped loudly when the song came to an end, even whistling before their eyes finally met. And with that small action, he felt his heart race and he was suddenly out of breath but in the best way possible. He held two thumbs up towards Wyatt before he began to sing once again, the crowd clearly loving him. But how could they not? He was incredible. In every sense of the word.

He loves a good protest… And any excuse to be privy to public displays of affection and fight against the metaphorical ‘Man.’” He grins, before gazing at Todd. “But that aside, I don’t want you to have to get your outfit all grass-stained. Because then the head boy would really know what we’ve been up to.” Laughing, Neil wiggled his eyebrows suggestively. 

Slipping his hand into the front of his jeans, he fishes out his keys as they finally approach the doors of their shared dorm. He slips out of Todd’s arm, but doesn’t move far away. Instead, Neil stops in front of the lamppost just before the doors to reach for Todd again, cupping the other man’s face in his hands and kissing him. “Fuck yeah, I want you there.” He states, looking into Todd’s eyes. “I want you… To meet my folks and all that.” He hesitates, just for a moment before saying finally: “I’m seriously crazy about you, Todd Anderson.”

He cracks a grin, taking one of Todd’s hands in his before he leads them into the dorm, flashing his ID card at the front door scanner before winking at the night guard - an older student, who looked dumbfounded at the two boys holding hands - and heading up the staircase with Todd right behind him. Once they reached the third floor, Neil paused once again to kiss Todd. Seriously kiss him, with tongue and everything. Right in the middle of the hallway. “I want you.” He said, his voice breathless from exhilaration and pure adrenaline. “My god, I want you.” 

At their door, Neil fumbled with his keys, giggling a little before the door finally opened and he pulled Todd in close, his lips moving to kiss his roommate’s neck before curiously giving the dark skin a playful nip. Letting the door close, Neil mumbled, jokingly: “Your bed or mine?”

“And we’re nothing if not about implementing change in this place, right?” He asked Todd playfully. Not that they would ever, at least Todd would never but it was nice to think of what he could do if he was a bit more forward. “I’m pretty sure that t-that exactly the kind of protest that Chuck would be all about. Actually I know it is.” Todd looked down at his costume before nodding in agreement, the last thing he wanted was to upset the theater kids. They were a dramatic bunch. Shockingly enough. “Oh yeah and we definitely don’t want.” Todd scoffed as they continued to make their way through the gorgeous campus.

Todd was watching Neil, taking that small moment as he looked for his keys to admire the guy that he’d come to really adore in the last could of months. What would his life be like if he didn’t have Neil in it? He didn’t even want to think of what could have been. Todd didn’t have a moment to say a thing before Neil’s lips were back on his and he had no complaints towards that. “T-Then I’m there.” He nodded, because he wanted to be braver and this was something he wanted to be brave for. “I’m s-sure they a-a-are just as amazing as you.” He nodded slowly. “I-I’m crazy about you too, N-Neil Perry. I am.” Todd pressed another quick kiss on his lips before they made their way into their dormitory.

A part of him had some nerves and apprehensions, this was the first time he’d ever done after like this. Public displays of affection, of course. But again, he wanted to be brave so those nerves were pushed back because as nervous as it made him to have someone privy to their affection, he didn’t care. He finally was at a place with Neil that he’d wanted to be at for quite some time. And once he accepted this new brave version of himself, kissing Neil in the usually busy hallway of their dormitory was kind of accelerating. Maybe they’d push to doing it when others were around? But for now, this was great. “I-I’m going to let you in on something. You have me.” He caught his breath before kissing him again. “You have me, Neil.”

Todd kissed at Neil’s neck, his arms wrapped around Neil’s waist from behind as he worked on getting their door open, smiling as it came open. Todd looked back at their twin beds, opposite of one another. If he wanted him as he said, they might need more room. “I have an idea. Go to your bed.” He asked Neil as he made his way to his. “We-we’re g-going to n-need m-more room, so.” He said, nudging his bed to let Neil know what he was thinking.

Simon paced in front of the cafe, the open mic night happening right besides him. And why hadn’t he gone in yet? As with all things in Simon’s life, he was overthinking it. What if he didn’t like him like him? What if he met him and suddenly decided this wasn’t for him? What if this was all just one big prank like in Never Been Kissed? Was he about to get egged? 

“Get out of your head, Simon.” He said to himself, shaking his head which caused a group of patrons heading into the event to look at him odd. Which was just great. “You can do this. There’s a nice, funny, sweet, gorgeous New Zealander in there that is expecting your presence and you will not be letting him down. Not tonight.” Simon nodded slowly as he looked through the glass of the venue to see that the last performer was ending their set. And who knew? Maybe Wyatt would be next.

So he took a deep breath... and entered.
