• Et rundstykke - [neutral] a roll

* in Norwegian a female word can be male. You can say “en brødskive” instead of “ei brødskive” but a male word can not be female. *

Like most languages you need to memorize what words are masculine, feminine or neutral. There is no hard fast rool to help determine this.

French and Norwegian Cognate Words

As I mentioned in a previously, while I was making my Easter post (giving both the Norwegian and the French word for “Easter”) I realized that the Norwegian word Påske and the French word Pâques are cognate. This gave me a few questions, mainly why are two words from separate language groups (a Germanic and a Romance language) cognate yet the word for the same thing, Easter, in English is cognate with neither? English is a Germanic language with many loan words from romance languages, especially French. 

First let’s clear a few things up. For those who don’t know, cognate essentials mean that both words have the same etymological origin, and or they come from the same root word.

We can tell by looking at Påske and Pâques that they obviously look similar, and that’s what made me first start to think about it. We also know that in French the “â” (A with a circumflex) means that in the past the letter used to be followed by an “s”. Like “Bâton” was once “Baston”. So this further points to these two words being cognate/related.

(While English does have a heavy French influence due to the Norman French dominance in England around 1066. English still retains more similarities with Germanic languages in Grammar and the core vocabulary remains Germanic)

Aka why Norwegian is one of the easiest languages for a native English speaker to learn.

The remains of a 1,200-year-old pagan temple to the Old Norse gods has been discovered in Norway’s seaside town of Ose. It is the first such temple found in the country, though we know what it is based on surviving temples in Denmark and Sweden. The wooden building is large for the time, about 45 feet (14 meters) long, 26 feet (8 m) wide, and up to 40 feet (12 m) high. Archaeologists think it was built sometime in the 700s, and would have been the site of sacrifices (and more mundane religious observances) during the midsummer and midwinter solstices.

The Norse began building these large “god houses” in the 500s CE. They replaced simpler cult sites, often outdoors, that had previously sufficed for worship. Larger god houses became popular as Norse society became more stratified and dominated by wealthy families, who are thought to have built god houses as part of their taking control of the cults of the gods.

The Old Norse religion was suppressed from the 1000s, when Norway’s kings forcibly imposed the Christian religion, and destroyed god houses to enforce worship in the new Christian churches. Perhaps including the one at Ose. (The one above is a reconstruction, the real site has only the foundations remaining.)

Tilfeldige Norske Ord og Uttrykk Random Norwegian Words and Phrases

Just a small collection of words and phrases I’ve recently learnt from various sources. Let me know if there are any mistakes!

å ynde (v1) - å like, å være glad i (to like)

Du ynder å undervurdere meg, jente (You like to underestimate me, girl.)

Jeg ynder alltid å lære nye ting av andre! (I always like learning new things from others!)

det haster (uttrykk, v1) - det må gjøres/trenger oppmerksomhet med en gang (it’s urgent)

Jeg fortalte ham at du er opptatt, men han insisterer det haster. (I told him you’re busy, but he insists it’s urgent)

Jeg har dårlig tid, så hva enn du er i ferd med å si, håper jeg det haster. (I’m in a rush, so whatever you’re about to say, I hope it’s urgent)

tabbe (m) - feil som resultat av dumhet eller tankeløshet (careless/stupid mistake)

Han hadde gjort sin siste tabbe. (He’d made his last mistake)

Tabben kostet laget seieren. (The mistake cost the team the victory)

til tider (uttrykk) - noen ganger (at times)

Hjertet hans hadde til tider vært sterkt nok til å bære dem begge. (His heart had at times been strong enough to carry them both)

å miste forstanden (uttrykk, v1) - å gå fra vettet (to lose one’s mind)

seiglivet (adj) - vanskelig å drepe eller ta knekken på (tenacious, resilient, persistent)

De håpet de kunne oppklare de seiglivede ryktene om saken på presskonferansen. (They hoped they could clear up the persistent rumours about the case at the press conference)

påviselig (adj) - som lar seg påvise (detectable)

Et stort flertall av de undersøkte fiskene er fri for påviselig plast. (A large majority of the examined fish are free of detectable plastic)

Det var en påviselig økning i blodsukker, men forskerne regnet at det var ubetydelig. (There was a detectable increase in blood glucose, but the scientists calculated it to be insignificant)

medgjørlig (adj) - som er lett å ha med å gjøre (compliant)

Han er en svært medgjørlig fyr fordi han er redd for konflikt (He’s a very compliant guy because he’s afraid of conflict)

Du kan vel ikke vente at befolkningen blir medgjørlig! (Surely you can’t be expecting the population to be compliant!)

gjensidig (adj) - som går begge veier, f.eks. en følelse (mutual)

Slapp av - ønsket dere har om å drepe meg er ikke gjensidig (Relax - your desire to kill me isn’t mutual)

Hun var helt knust - hun hadde trodd at følelsen var gjensidig (She was devastated - she’d believed the feeling was mutual)

holdning (nm) - attitude

Hun hadde en flott holdning til å studere, og derfor besto hun alle eksamene sine.

Vinden plystret gjennom hulene i veggen.

lystig (adj/adv) - merry/merrily

fremragende (adj) - outstanding

Utstillingen var en fremragende kunstnerisk prestasjon.

Hun fikk Abelsprisen for sin fremragende innsats innen matematikk.

Han er en fremragende musikker, men ikke en særlig god vokalist.

tolkning (m/f) - interpretation

Læreren la fram to tolkninger av diktet.

Jeg synes tolkningen hans er interessant, men feil.

Hun hadde en annen tolkning av maleriet, men det var like gyldig.
