You live in SoCAl too?! Me too! Well, I go to college in FL. Regarding extreme weather have your students never experienced wildfires?? Perhaps they could write about that?
I thought about that, but my students live in the inner city and most of them haven't ventured to anywhere that would get wildfires. Thanks though!
Calling Read 180 Teachers
I teach 6th Grade Read 180 and I am planning the writing portion of Workshop 2 "When Disaster Strikes." I want to make the Writing Segment more aligned with Common Core and more relevant to my students. The recommended prompt is to write about a time when you experienced extreme weather. I live in Southern California and my students have never experienced extreme weather (not even a major earthquake). Have any of you tweaked the prompt for your students? Or can anyone point me in the direction of some useful resources? Thank you!
Ya know when people talk about the ups and downs of teaching...
They reference that chart that ascends pretty high when you're in the honeymoon phase at the beginning of the year and then plummets just as the seasons are changing. Yup, I think that's where I am, in the trough of teaching-induced blah-ness. Such a shitty phase. Can't wait for it to pass.

The number of homeless students has increased by nearly 75 percent since the recession began.
Sad. I have a student that is homeless and most likely more that I just don't know about yet.
It’s a great book! No sleep for me tonight.
The kids got me sick and my man is in class, but at least I have time to read my book club book.
One piece of helpful advice:
Don't grade everything. This was really nice to hear because grading is one of my biggest struggles. One of my colleagues even told me yesterday, teachers throw some student work out. They front like they don't, but they do. Then she followed up: just don't throw it away at school, do that at home.
So far, this is my experience:
Being a teacher = having no life. Any tips from veteran (or not-so-veteran) teachers on how to balance the gazillion responsibilities of being a teacher with the necessities of staying a happy human being?
Books
I am a first year teacher and my library is depressingly sparse. The kids always ask if I have certain books and I have to say no (not to mention our school library doesn't even have a librarian so there goes that option). Where do people get cheap books? I'm going to check dollar bookstores and the Salvation Army. Any other ideas? Are there places that will donate books to teachers?

I just got one of these bad boys! So excited. And for all of you that are laminator crazy, search the #laminator tag. People are laminating EVERYTHING. Hilarious.
Gotta love new books! My kiddos ordered a ton of books from Scholastic Reading Clubs so I got like a bazillion points! I ordered 40 new books for my classroom library, 8 baby books for my incoming niece/nephew, and 10 books for me. I squealed when all the boxes came.
I need to do something like this. I need books for my classroom!
