How to litter train your kitten
An important part of feline development of teacup kittens is to learn how to use the litter box. That being said, you cannot train your kitten to use litter per se as she naturally understands the litter and all you need to do is to encourage her to use the litter box.
Here are the steps you need to follow to get your kitten on the right track to use litter box.
1. Introduce her to litter at the right time
Newborn kittens do not start using the bathroom until 3 weeks of age and you need to stimulate them to use the bathroom. Once your teacup kittens are 3 weeks old you can introduce them to the litter box. Every kitten is different and they take up the litter practice at different pace, so be patient.
2. Pick a kitten-safe litter
Kitten learn and explore with their mouth. This makes it necessary that you choose the toys and supplied that do not result in your kitten consuming anything toxic or dangerous. This includes the litter box. Do not buy a litter box that has any harsh chemicals, fragrances or clumping properties. For adult cats clumping litter is a standard but for kittens it is a hazard. Normal, pellet-based litter is more suitable for your kittens.
3. Choose the right placement
Placement of the litter box is as important as choosing the right litter box. Kittens are naturally attracted to the corners away from clutter. Place the litter box in a corner so that your kitten is encouraged to use it.
Kittens should be able to find the litter box easily. They have a natural drive to cover their waste and they always lookout for convenient space to do so. Putting the litter box away from clutter during their transition or your kitten will develop bad habits. Ideally, it is advised that a 3-8 weeks kitten should be confined to one room where she can easily find the litter box at all times. If you are training a bigger cat, then a larger space will be needed and availing multiple litter boxes is advised.
4. Use positive reinforcement
Positive reinforcement is a very powerful training tool. You can never make use of punishment to train your kitten. Whenever you kitty uses the litter box correctly praise her with treats. If your kitten uses the same location frequently, put litter box there.
If your kitten is struggling to use the box, use toys that attract attention of your kitty.
