Blue Exorcist: Yukioâs Eyes - Thoughts and Theories
In celebration of the release of the new season of Blue Exorcist, Iâd thought Iâd touch the seriesâs greatest mystery yet: Yukioâs demon power, specifically his eyes. The anime and the manga version of the franchise follow each other with a decent amount of accuracy, except in the instance of Yukio showing signs of his demon power. In the anime, Yukio is revealed to have a strange mark under his arms that suggest that his demon blood has begun to surface and, after being possessed by Satan in the first season, he is shown to have demon features just like Rin. However, such an event never took place in the manga, instead it is revealed that there is something about his eyes that suggested that he inherited demonic powers during his investigation of âEyes of the Impure Kingâ aside from that he looks very much human. Basically, the key to Yukioâs power is hidden within his eyes and while there isnât much evidence supporting this claim it is quite possible that his power could surpass Rinâs.Â
When Rin was told the truth about his demonic origins, he was told that Yukio was too weak to handle any demonic power he could have inherited, but there isnât any real evidence to support that claim. Granted that growing up Rin was the more outgoing of the two and that Yukio was a bit of a crybaby, strength is not necessarily measured by the power of a personâs resolve and the fact that Yukio is considered a prodigal young exorcist proves he is capable of so much without any demonic power. Even if he doesnât show to have the same physical strength as his older twin brother, heâs clearly a force to be reckoned with. In my opinion, Yukio is actually the one who inherited the most of demonic power not Rin. Rin uses his power like an extension of his body, controlling it with his will and manipulating it with his advantage, Yukio, on the other hand, doesnât have any control over it but when he is faced with a situation that is near the brink of death the results are unfathomable. One of the tests he performed in order to assess the power of his eyes was falling off a high building, placing his life in jeopardy and although he has no memory of what happened afterwards he finds himself in giant crater where he landed, completely unharmed. When the human body is placed in a dangerous situation, the fight-or-flight response takes effect, pumping reserves of performance enhancing hormones in order to better tackle the problem. Such reactions cannot be called on a whim it is only when faced with a great amount of stress will the body respond accordingly, I believe that Yukioâs demon power functions under a similar principle. While Yukio did get picked on a lot as a child, I doubt anyone ever intended to kill him and with his training as an exorcist his psyche has become more resistant towards threats. It wasnât until his showdown with Saburota Todo that his eyes began to react to the danger, and the fact that Yukio was only able use to that point is a clear indicator that his powers have the potential outmatch his sword-wielding brother. According to the anime, the twins biological mother was mysteriously impervious to Satanâs flame, whereas everything else the fire touched was instantly destroyed, even if he was born with a weaker constitution, if Yukio had inherited that trait he would have been able to absorb more power than Rin without anyone being able to notice, they are fraternal twins after all, which means that they only share about 50% percent of genetic material, Rin may have inherited their fatherâs strength but Yukio could have inherited their motherâs. Perhaps that is why every time Yukio underwent testing to see whether or not he possessed any demonic power were always negative. No one suspected him to take after his biological father because they all believed in his weakness, even Yukio believed it, but his strength has always been unassumed by everyone because he had the appearance of a weakling. It was the belief in his weakness that pushed Yukio to train to become an exorcist and it was that very same belief that led him to become one of the most accomplished exorcists at such a young age, earning two Meisters and the ability to summon powerful spirits on his first attempt. And even when he is shown be strong in so many ways, he still secretly clings to this so-called weakness that he has, as he canât bring himself to confide in anyone regarding the discovery of his eyes.Â
I am uncertain of the path that Yukio will end up taking, but, even if he is shown to be more âhumanâ than Rin, the potential to become a demon like his older twin lingers in his mind. Which is what disturbs him the most everyone knows Rin as Satanâs son and while they are twins Yukio doesnât even know who he really is because his abilities are unassuming and no one can truly see what lies beyond the surface not even for themselves. If the first season of the anime is any indication though, Yukio may become an even greater interest to the demon community than Rin, as no one has yet explored his potential as a demon, except maybe Mephisto who told Amaimon that their âyoungestâ brother is under their tutelage, and seeing that Yukio was born after Rin, there is a possibility that the older twin is just a distraction in this conflict. Â
What do you think of Yukioâs eyes? If you have any other thoughts about the series or if thereâs something else you think I should elaborate on, I would very much like to hear from you.
