A few years ago I completed a project called The Pirate Bay Bundle. It was a bundled torrent of one hundred freeware videogames put on The Pirate Bay. It was a curational distribution experiment and notably my most “successful” project.

My current project, which I have now dubbed One Thousand Voices, a twitter thread with each tweet containing one different videogame creator accompanied by a gif of a videogame that they created (or helped create), was started as a springboard that was going to lead up to its successor, however I have come to look at it as its spiritual successor.

Over the course of its completion, it has garnered coverage on numerous websites and over one thousand retweets. It has a beginning, a middle and an end.

While the project achieved these skin deep achievements, it also has intended subtexts (some pictured below). I’ll leave it up to you to decide what it did or didn’t manage to accomplish.

Whatever the case, regardless of its successes and failures, I am proud of it.

In truth, I fucked it up. I had a whole other half planned where I was going to send out a detailed questionnaire to the videogame creators in the thread about their upbringings and how it has affected their work within the medium but I worked so hard on the thread itself that I ran out of time and energy.

I feel after having worked on this for over a year that I should be able to impart something profound or poetic or be able to share a deeper truth about videogames. The deeper truth is that I have no deeper truths to share. Videogames can be beautiful and chaotic and yet the medium remains largely unexplored. Popular big name AAA releases are discussed endlessly, while just about everything else gets tossed to the side.

Everything I do is an attempt to explore a little nook of videogames that would otherwise remain unexplored and unhighlighted.

I encourage everyone that engages with this project in good faith to make their own discoveries and celebrate the diverse videogame creators within.

I keep forgetting to post these Quill updates on here! I’m super busy with Flinthook, but I still find time here and there to progress on our little bird explorer’s game. @technobeanie has upgraded the editor a bunch and worked on our character’s movement a lot, while I prototyped a few puzzles just to test the basic flow. I also keep working on the visuals, hopefully making the artstyle even better and the workflow tighter so I can really just create a ton of art for this world.

A little preview of Flagships, the game my buddies and I made in 48h for the Indie Speed Run. 

It’s a 2-player arcade game about launching rocket after rocket in space, to take control of planets and collect gems faster than your opponent. It’s mostly a game of skill (align rocket shots, switch between planets quickly to attack faster) but there’s a fair bit of strategy too (capture planets to shoot rockets from different positions, take out your opponent’s planets to reduce their firepower, etc). It’s pretty neat!

More on than soon, as we’ll probably release it for free in the coming week or two!

Bubble Beacon

Bubble Beacon is a cooperative game of survival in a very tight bit of space, for 1-6 players. Using the two sticks on a controller, players aim and shoot with both arms, blasting away weird asteroids and using the momentum to move around.

Playing Bubble Beacon requires controllers, a bunch of different controllers are supported, like Xbox, Playstation, etc!

Work in progress of one of our Neverpants game. Currently modeling assets to populate the world.

I’ve been working with Blender so far and it works great with Unity. Only had one major issue with the importation. The diffuse materials were much darker once inside the engine. Finally found that the Display Device inside Color Management needs to be set to None. Voila!

The game jam I was working on with my lovely man Pierre-Luc is now available to play! It’s titled A Good Night’s Sleep and it’s about a poor little critter named Gus who can’t sleep because pipes in his apartment make really loud noises at night. You have to help him figure out which pipes are the culprits and block the noise with three different corks.

I just finished the “title card” (main menu, I guess?) for A Good Night’s Sleep, the game jam I’m making with Pierre-Luc this month, and I like it, so here it is! I tried to be as faithful to 1940’s cartoons as possible while drawing it. I’m quite happy with the result.

(Also I haven’t drawn anything other than Boumeries in forever, so this was pretty fun, too.)

The game is ALMOST done, guys. We’ll let you know when it comes out!
