Happy 2014! This is My 2014 Tech Prediction!

Over the last few months, I started hearing more about various companies creating "weareable technology" but after today, it was more than apparent that this will be all the rage in tech for 2014!

Today alone there were about 4 different articles citing various products that companies are launching. In addition, CES 2014 just kicked off, and there seems to be a lot of wearable tech that will be featured there.

Wrapping Paper Embedded with Vegtable Seeds??

Sounds peculiar I know! A UK company called Eden's Paper is seeking funding through Kickstarter http://www.kickstarter.com (Kickstarter is a company that crowd sources funds for projects that range from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology).

Eden's Paper found a way to environmentally save tons of wrapping that was being thrown out, and turn it into wrapping paper that is like a paper of seeds. You can lay the paper flat when you are done in your garden and it will grow the vegetables upright apparently.

Thalmic Labs is a start up company out of Kitchener-Waterloo, what we in Canada call Silicon North. The company has developed a gesture control arm band called The Myo. The device detects gestures and movements in two ways: muscle activity using EMG sensors and motion sensing using a 9-axis IMU.The Myo armband uses a Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy connection to work with things you already have, like your Mac or Windows PC. Importance of Knowing How Your Electronics Work

LittleBits is a company that makes a library of electronic modules that snap together with tiny magnets for prototyping. In simplest of terms it is like creating structures using LEGO with no engineering knowledge. Essentially it is circuit-boards that have specific functions that are engineered to snap together with magnets. It requires no soldering, no wiring, no programming....Brilliant isn't it!

BYOD vs CYOD: Bring or Choose Your Own Device?

I have always been a BlackBerry device holder, and really don't foresee myself changing anytime soon. Although many of the competing mobile companies have done a better job with security features, I still feel they lack the tight security BlackBerry offers, like the encrypted connection to banking and shopping sites, the NFC technology, in addition to the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader (permits you to prove your identity to your BlackBerry smartphone or computer)

My personal opinion to appease both sides, is to have IT departments pre-select devices that meet business needs, but also offer a secure solution.  Note: as the article below discusses, it is the role of the IT department to still manage best practices when employee's want to use unapproved apps.
