The Wanderers – MY LAST MONTH AT FULL SAIL!
The last month started. This month I learned to say "I EARNED my degree at…", I learned to make interviews, write my bio, I learned how to create my own web site, and also I did my professional resume. Being a producer all this year, made me realize that we surround ourselves with people with different personalities and we must learn to deal with problems, trying to be polite and respectful.
This month it was so funny, because it was about me: my brand, and I started to think about what I should do after my graduation. I love created my web site because in that moment I just sat down with my computer and I gathered everything I had done in my last year: photos, videos, jobs, experiences, among others.
My big challenge was my brand video. I do not like talk in English, probably because my mother language is Spanish and I know that I make a lot of grammar mistakes when I talk. However, I practiced days before in front of my mirror and my friends all the questions that the professor gave us in class. I was so nervous the day of the shooting, but at the end, I think that I did it.
In the other hand the time to send my final short film into the festivals IS HERE. It was a funny time with Jess and my crew looking the festivals. We were so exited because after a lot of work, and nights without sleep we did it. Also, we had money saved from our production and we wanted to expend those savings in a lot of films.
Work under pressure is not easy, when you have a big responsibility on your shoulders. That was a big challenge all this year. Luckily I have great classmates, they always supported me in everything: we had, discussions, a lot of pressure, run because everything needed to be on time. However, at the end we achieved our ultimate goal: Having our 3 short films ready for distribution.
I like challenges, and this master was difficult but not impossible. I have always worked as a producer and I believe that team work is the key for the success in this industry. The Wanderers and AGTDF were a wonderful productions and I’m so proud of them.
Now I'm ready to go outside into the real world. I’m happy, in one week I’ll call my father in my country Venezuela and I I’ll said: “I did it”.
As Walt Disney said: “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”
Thank you.

My Mastery Blog :)
Sound and color ready!
Film Assembly: This course represented a big challenge for me. At the beginning of my Master, I remember that I wrote: “In this course I hope to learn how to add all the sound effects that I need in my final movie.” Now, it is a realized goal.
During this month I understood how difficult it is to be at the end of the road: after producing al, the movie now is time to concentrate in the last things, sound and color. Being a producer was a big responsibility that I had on my shoulders. It depends on you that the movie goes correctly as it should be. When you arrive into this stage, you now that we need to give life to the movie.
I understood that without any sound the film will be boring. Dialogue, music and sound effects are the perfect complement to introduce the audience in that unreal world. They need to believe in this magic world if you want that the movie to be successful.
I think that everything is important, every detail would help us in the future. For example: If we record the dialogues when the actors are rehearsing, this will probably help us in the future when we are editing. In this world I learned that we do not have ant bad take or any bad sound.
The music is the final touch of our movie, we need to select it very carefully because depend oh her if you want to catch the audience. Also, the special effects give us the notion of reality: the door closes, the bed creaks, rain, TV sound, birds, among others. All of them are perfect if we want to create reality.
In this course I learned a lot about the work done in post-production and also how to use Pro Tools. The last one was a challenge because I only used edition programs like Premiere, Avid Media Composer or Final Cut, however, Pro Tools is something completely new.
I really enjoy this month, now my movie is ready for distribution.
Edition time!
Post Production: This course was funny and entertaining. At the beginning I was scare because I always edit my videos with Adobe Premier. Media Composer was a new challenge, a new program a new tool that I need to learn and understand to edit my trailer. At the beginning of my Master, I remember that I wrote: “In this course I hope to learn how to edit my videos and create amazing things.” Now, it is a realized goal.
During this time, I understood how difficult is to be an editor: you are in charge about almost everything, the success of the film depends on the person who edits and makes the final product. I learned that you have dailies, cuts, effects, different formats and specials tools to create the movie.
Everything is important: the color, the visual effects, the sound, the music. As editor, one should be aware of what is going on with all of this. He must also be assertive with the cuts at the moment to create the timeline and try to read the vision to capture the essence of what the director wants to show in the film.
I think that everything is important: every detail, every image. One tip to never forget: don’t erase anything. The reason is because we do not know when we should use that in the movie. It doesn’t matter what program do you use to edit; the principles are the same.
Probably I’m not perfect right now with Media Composer, however I want to use it more and practice to improve my skills with this program. As I said before, I never use Media Composer. I did not know anything about the program. However, I thing that I can go and handle this tool by myself. At the beginning, it would probably be hard, however I know that I can do it.

The Wanderers – My production month!
As Orson Welles said: “The enemy of art is the absence of limitations.”
The complicated month started. This month I learned to say "no", I learned to run, talk to my classmates, I learned that sometimes the simple way is the most complicated. Being a producer made me realize that we surround ourselves with people with different personalities and we must learn to deal with problems, trying to be polite and respectful.
Anthony Hall, movie producer, plain in his video how to achieve a successful career in film production. One of the advise that I won’t ever forget is that the key to being the best in this field, is to start making films: short films of 5 seconds. We must learn that to start something you have to get to work. In this industry we can not expect to make a movie of 2 hours of the night to the morning, we need to develop our skills and learn to manage them in order to grow. With the technology that we have today everybody can hold a camera a shoot.
This month I learned that safety on set comes first, even If we have to leave all our equipment outside while falling a storm. In our second day of The Wanderers we had a big electric storm and ran that day into the soundstage because of that. Although everything happened, and the crew was fine and safety, we had to put into practice the plan A, B, C, D ... in order to solve and finish shooting our short film.
My big challenge was the budget. My art department required a huge budget: We needed to create the home of The Wanderers and Anne's room. The story had a lot of small details: For example, The Wanderers lived traveling around the world and they are gatherers; for that reason, they had collections of antiques. We must to show that on the screen.
In the other hand the rain was a big obstacle for us. We moved our production inside the soundstage, and in this moment I am very grateful to have had my crew. My art department created the woods inside the soundstage and, even when at the beginning I did not like it, when I saw that on the screen I love it.
Works under pressure is not easy. When you have the responsibility to solve problems quickly, we must have the strength to speak out loud and get everyone to hear you. Understand that although sometimes you have to give orders, must be able to express yourself, try not to offend anyone, and earn respect.
I like challenges, and this was difficult but not impossible. I have always worked as a producer, and although in my country was producing events, I realized that producing a film is another world. As Frank Smith said, Hollywood is a big company. Now I know that I need to understand very well this industry if I want to become a film producer.
AGTDF was also a challenge. The first day was at the house but we did not have permission. Change all production was difficult. Create the set on the soundstage was amazing, and makes me think we could do there from the beginning. If we would have planned well, we could create the perfect place for the film.
Now I'm ready to edit. Although it will not be easy because we changed a lot since the pre production, I know that we will have an excellent final product.
Remember: As producer, you need to convince a studio that your idea will generate money. - Anthony Hall.
Thank you.

I love my job!
For this discussion I watched:
-Sam Mendes: 25 Ways to Be a Better Director | Charlie Rose -Angelina Jolie, Christopher Nolan and more Directors on THR's Roundtable | Oscars 2015
Since I was a child I always admired Tim Burton. It was so funny every time that I watched the Oscars with my father I told him: “Dad I will be there”. However, I understand that being a director is not easy. For me the director represents sacrifice and they have a big responsibility with their audiences.
Listen the 25 Ways to be a Better Director, (Charlie Rose), I selected some items (and phrases) that I believe are essentials in this “Director’s life”.
1.As Director, I truly believe that you need to be surround of good people: Good COLLABORATES. People in whom you can trust. Your crew is fundamental to create your movie. 2.Learn to say I don’t know the answer. We don’t know everything and is completely human not know some stuff. Is in us to find the answer. 3.Lesson at the end. Keep learning, my dad always told me that everyday is perfect for learn something new. 4.Confidence is essential, get away from the ego. The director must trust in themselves. I always try to repeat that phrase everyday to my director. You need to believe that you can do it. 5.It’s never too old to lean something new, and we can’t forget this. Even the small details can teach us a big lesson. 6.We must never forget that here we don’t have something not right or wrong. 7.Learn when we need to shut up, especially when others speak. It is the best way to communicate and learn. 8.Use all the imagination in the room. Use your crew, ask them, trust them. Small things can change everything. 9.Lean to accept the blame: If the movie gone wrong corresponds to that you had a bad casting, bad script, bad organization, among others. 10.Don’t ever forget how lucky you are to work in something that you love. We must remember this EVERYDAY. Love is the to continue working and learning. Always we have fear. Like Angelia Jolie said at beginning never is easy, and she had a lot to learn. Read is the key if you want to understand the script. Never give up, is the phrase that I repeat to my director everyday on set. Even when you believe that we won’t have the solution, at the end, there will always be a path to follow.
Patience is a virtue that we must not forget. I was impressed to hear the director of "Boyhood" spent 12 years making the movie. We all want to run, without realizing that often we sacrifice important shoots for our hurry. I understand that the last day in “The Wanderers” we wrap at 11PM and we still have 1 hour more to continue working and we waste it.
For me, directing a film equivalent to become a hero: behind a film that can move emotions like anger, sadness, nostalgic, etc.; There is a director and a crew that spent days, hours, moths, years working for those sitting in a movie theater to enjoy the movie.
Thank you :)

Creating The Wanderers world
For this discussion I watched:
- What Does A Production Designer Do?
- DP/30: The Grand Budapest Hotel, Production Design, Make-Up/Hair Oscar Nominees
- Maria Djurkovic: Production Design Mini Masterclass
Working for The Wanderers I've noticed that one of the most difficult work is to be Production Designer. It is read the mind of the director and capture on camera what the director wants to communicate. We have color, wardrobe, hair, makeup, scenography, among others.
Like Maria Djurkovic did with The Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, our producer designer came to me and Jess with her drawn ideas. Using this technique is easy to visualize everything and imagine how it would be set.
In our case our Art Department has a big challenge: built a glen. For me, I think that it was one of the most difficult task to do. As David Gropman said in the video the real job is to understand what the director sees and what he wants to say on camera. The Production Designer needs to know very well every detail of the script. Director and Production Designer must to have almost like a marriage: both need to communicate to create everything together.
In the Wanderers, we have a tight budget. However, our Production Designer came with excellent ideas to save money and make the vision of the director come true. I remember that she always had a solution and for me that shows me as a producer that I had the best team working with me: we bought wood, paint, building materials to create the glen and the room of the protagonist.
As John Stevenson said. The producer designer has a mission: fit the director’s vision on set, even if he has a small budget. Also, is a team work, all must work together, must have excellent communication and mutual collaboration to get things done on time. Remember: Time is our enemy; we need to learn how to handle it.
The Wanderers had a lot of images of references, that was perfect to introduce Tekisha in the film. The first moment that Jessica talked with her they connected immediately. As Maria Djurkovic said, that connection is very important if the producer designer wants the job. Our Director, the Production Designer and the Art Director worked together to create the sketches in preproduction. When we arrived into production work we have: list of props, set designer, wardrobe, make-up. All of this help us to work fast, we already know where we can find all the stuffs, how much we want to spent, and how we want to use it.
In this department every detail Is important. For that reason, this work requires passion. Nothing is placed at random in a movie, everything has a reason and it is important to determine that at the time of the preproduction. As Mark Coulier said, we want to create reactions with our work. Get this moment when everyone is just impressed with the movie, that is our reward.
Shooting a Movie
Since I was a child I have always dreamt of shooting films that demonstrate how amazing my country and my people are. Creating a film from nothing is something I have always admired about the great directors like Tim Burton or Martin Scorsese
When I came into The USA I realized that I need to learn how to produce a film. For me it is incredible how an idea can become a beautiful story in which a lot of people may believe in magic for 90 minutes. However, I know that It is not a simple task.
I watched for this discussion:
Robert Rodriguez - Ten More Minutes: The Anatomy of a Shoot Out
Planet Terror - 10 Minute Film School
Ten Minute Flick School
The first video I loved the way that Robert Rodriguez makes his rehearsals with the actors. An excellent idea is to recording them just as he does to realize after what can be changed or improved. This works especially when you have a storyboard and you imagine something as a director, and then realize that in reality can not make that shoot and you have to look solutions.
In my country, I learned in my university how to take a perfect photo, how to create a TV show, how to edit a video and how to write a script. However, they never tough me how to put together all of these tools and build a movie; beginning from an idea to the end with my final product: a surprising film.
As a producer and director I understood that the most difficult challenge is to deal with the budget. They not always have huge amounts of money to record and we should find solutions to make the film. I had seen the movie "Planet Terror", and from a beginning I believed that the production had a lot of money for all the special effects. We know that The special effects are often carried a significant amount of money from the budget.
As Roberto Rodriguez explain in his videos we need to know how to manage our money and determinate what is important and what not. If we know how to improve our shooting techniques and we have creativity, we can save and time. First of all, we need to have very clear that in post - production we can do a lot of things. For example, use the green leg with the protagonist was a simple and inexpensive idea to create her “weapon leg”. After in edition they create the perfect montage in her leg. Like this he saved makeup, props and time.
Other thing that we should put attention is the actors that we want. They are a major contribution when we shooting the scenes. For me, there has to be a rapport between the director and actors, they must to understand each other and listen respectfully. My best example was Antonio Banderas and Roberto: they worked together like a team.
The film industry is about doing incredible things in a short time. As directors we have the time playing against. Playing with the camera, do tricks to complete the scenes, solve situations, among others, they are the things that make us great as directors. For example, in the scene Mariachi Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek, if Roberto not explained that he recorded first Antonio and then the actress, because she had not arrived, no one had noticed. A camera cut was enough to add her into the scene.
Working as the producer with The Wanderers I realized that although the budget is tight you can find ways to have everything you need on set. A few days ago I went with my art department several places looking for the best prices to create all the scenery that is required. For example, sometimes it is easier and cheaper to create a room to rent a house.
At the beginning we wanted to rent a house for the scenes that we need a room, however after a few discussions we realized that will be simple if we use the sound stage and create the room that we want. In this way, we could do as we wanted without fear of ruining absolutely nothing in the location.
Remember that everything is possible if we fight for it with our best, I learned a long time ago. As directors we need to work a lot with our creativity. Amazing things can be created on a tight budget.
My video Diary
Month 8
Producing The Wanderers
This month was a big challenge for me. It is my first time working as a producer in this country. When I worked in Venezuela many things were totally different. The challenge for me was learning how to be an effective producer, completing the task of filling out paperwork, and with whom I need to organize and plan this production.
I realized that for this job I need to have order and the ability to communicate effectively with my whole team. I must to be a leader in order to handle problems efficiently, and to ensure every department gives me their work in a timely manner.
Everyone on my team have different personalities. There are ways to approach each other and talk. As a great organizer, I sent daily messages reminding my crew what they need to complete, the hours of meetings, the need to send to me their crew deals memos, bios, art department budget, etc.
Patience is definitely a virtue when working with multiple people on a group project. One Sunday by 9:00 PM, I did not have the weekly report, art list, ort shot list, or 1st AD shooting schedule. There were times when I had to be the person who motivated everyone. I was the person who told them they were doing an excellent job, while offering my help. At the end of the day, I want them all to feel part of the project.
At some point I became the mediator of my team. I felt the pressure because I needed to print the book production, have everything ready for weekly deliveries, I must be able to solve the problems of all productions, so my crew could finish everything on time.
I’m ready for my next month. I learned to trust my crew because despite all the setbacks, we have our Production Book done.
