Damian knew something was wrong as soon as he had called at 6:00 PM. His usual after dinner call to his beloved baba.
He laid in bed, phone ringing. One. TwoâŚ
Two was much too many, but it kept ringing.Â
The latest his Papa ever answered his calls was two rings, even when he'd unexpectedly called. Having moved out of the Manor, it was expected that Papa missed him and wanted to keep in touch. Lately, Papa had been calling Damian more and more outside of schedule, to Damianâs great joy. Damian often thought Papa would call him just to hear his voice seeing how some nights, Papa would call and not say a word other than his greeting or sign off.
Of course Papa needed his pup.
Even when he was first left at his Father's manor by Mother, Papa made the most effort to connect with him and integrate him into the pack. Although the experience was rather infantilizing as Papa enjoyed introducing him to various graphic novels and model figurines. Damian supposed Papa couldnât help his coddling nature.Â
After all, Papa was an omega.Â
An omega who was not responding at all.
In fact, the call had gone to voice message. Something was terribly wrong. Even when busy or at the earliest hours in the morning, Papa always answered.
âPapa, I will be there. Wait for me. I will resolve the issue. Be safe,â Damian instructed after the beep.
Damian opened his dorm window. âJon. I need to get to Gotham. Now,â he spoke as though to the breeze. Damianâs dorm room had been on the seventh floor since his move to college life.
The breeze grew, and just in time for Damian to dismantle the window and fit his body through, Jon was there, ready to offer a piggy back ride as he hovered in the air.Â
Damian climbed on his back. âHey, Dames. It sounded serious. What's wrong?â Jon asked. He of all people knew Damian did not abandon his medical studies lightly.
âMy Papa is in danger.â
At 7:37 PM, Jason was having a shit day.Â
Luckily for him, he knew he had a family to fall back on, although he'd never admit that. âŚMaybe just to Papa, but Papa was the one he trusted the most anyway.
And tonight, Jason knew he needed his Papa.
Ever since he was that little runt Bruce seemed to take in for the fun of it, (causing trouble until he was taken in was technically not the fun of it, but Jason could interpret his life as he wanted) Papa and Alfred had been the only ones acting like actual adults in his life.
While Bruce brought him into the life of the cape and mask as a way for Jason to quench his thirst for justice, and probably more so to fill the space Dick had left, Papa let him be a kid with a Papa. Papa introduced him to all his favourite novels. Papa helped with homework when Jason was stuck, although sometimes Jason knew exactly how to solve it, he just wanted to be around Papa. While Bruce was his Batman, Papa was Papa.
Red Hood zoomed through the Gotham streets on his motorcycle, eager to cut his night short tonight, maybe talk about poetry composition over whatever Papa baked that night. Papa had been baking a lot lately, but Jason couldn't honestly say he minded the weight gain from it. In him or in Papa.Â
Papa was supposed to be a little squishy. He wasn't at all fat, but he just had that tender omega body that Jason wanted to cuddle all night like when he was little. Always smelling of roses, vanilla, and milk, Jason had always wanted to just eat his Papa's scent up. Jason wasn't on the greatest terms with Bruce right now, but heâd never let that stop him from visiting Papa. Papa at least could keep a secret.
Jason couldn't wait to be home.
Rolling his motorcycle into the cave, getting in with the backdoor in the system he had coded for himself, Jason hid his bike and got to work. Taking a secret passage, Jason went from the cave to the kitchen, looking around with his nose before he left the hidden corridor.
There was no scent of baking tonight. No scent of omega as Jason dropped into the kitchen.Â
â...Papa? Papa? Hey! Pops, where are ya?â He went looking around, using his nose.Â
Papa's scent was barely there, like he hadn't been in the manor for a while.
Jasonâs steps became urgent, breaking into a sprint as he went to Papaâs wing of the manor. âPapa? Papa, I'm home. You wanna⌠talk books? I know you've been reading that book from the one who wrote the last one you liked, right? Papa?â Jason burst in the door.
Papa wasn't in his bedroom when Jason ducked in, immediately running to the next location he could be.Â
Not in his bathroom.Â
Not his nest or hobby room or balcony or even his closet.
Fuck.Â
Papa was missing.
Dick snuck in through the roof at 8:17 PM.Â
Usually, that would have triggered five different alarms, had Dick not texted Alfred to expect him but not tell Papa. Papa deserved a surprise.Â
As he swung on his familiar ceiling, Dick recounted his plan. Find Papa, backflip into his arms, give Papa the whole low down on his life, maybe over some of the Frosted Flakes he knew Papa kept in the house for him, and ask Papa all his horrible relationship questions.
After a bit of looking, Dick was dumbfounded. He jumped down from the bookshelf he had been walking on. âPapa? Papa! Where are you?âÂ
He checked his phone. Papa didn't know it, but Dick knew that Bruce put a tracker in Papa, right in his left arm, hidden under the omega fat near his bicep. Dick had gotten himself access to the location a while ago.
âAh, of course, his bedroom⌠Papa must be nesting.â Dick made his way there normally. He guessed Papa might be tired if he was already nesting for the night. No problem, Dick loved nesting with Papa anywhere, any time. It had been a while since he had nested with Papa. He hoped he wouldn't deem him too old for cuddles.
When he came inside, the bedroom was empty. The nest void of Papa.
It looked stale and unused. All there was in the painfully tidy room was a note in the bedside drawer and a tiny chip beside it. Papaâs chip. Dick had almost missed it when looking over the room, only finding it during a much more thorough search.
To Bruce, it said on the back of the envelope.
It didn't take the former sidekick of a world class detective to put it together.Â
Bruce had really messed this one up, hadn't he?Â
Tim had been working since he got home from patrol at around 2:00 AM and now it was 10:26 PM.Â
He hadn't looked at the time in hours. It wasn't that he had anything too especially urgent. That night, he had looked at his data, his cases, and told himself he'd work until Papa came to check on him, so about two or three hours of work.Â
Tim had been working for twenty hours straight, after a patrol too.
As he set his work down, he went sniffing for Papa. Even Papaâs presence was a sweet aroma that filled the manor. His baking, his pheromones, all of it led Tim to his doting Papa.
âŚOr at least it usually did.
Tim followed the trail, only to find nothing.
An empty kitchen.Â
An empty bed.
An empty nest, missing Papaâs favourite sweater that they had given him a few years ago for his birthday, the one that they took turns wearing for a week each so it would smell like them. The same one he saw Papa throw at Bruce during another of their little play arguments.Â
His Papa had left him.
Bruce only realized when he came back from patrol at 3:35 AM the next day.
He came to a cold bed, barely smelling of the omega who inhabited it, and a house thrown into chaos.
And he realized his omega was gone.
Damian was the one to call the emergency meeting, swinging into the cave in full Robin gear, panting. Bruce had barely had time to discover his husbandâs disappearance before it.Â
Red Hood, Red Robin, and Nightwing gathered as well, despite half of the group not even being supposed to be in Gotham. Bruce was still in his after-patrol robe.
âThis is serious. Even after enlisting Jonâs help, I haven't found Papa. Who is responsible for this?!â Damian demanded, frustrated and sweating through his suit.
âThere wasn't a trace. Nothing on traffic or security cams.â Tim rapidly typed on the batcomputer as he spoke. Gesturing to the envelope on the desk, Tim spoke again, âBruce, that's yours. I haven't opened it in case Papa's set it to do anything.â
Dick sighed. âI've had the police in Blud and Gotham looking for hours, and there's nothing.â
âFucking useless- Does anyone have a solid lead?!â Jason yelled, slamming his helmet down on the cave.Â
âBoys! Calm down.â Bruce walked down into the cave, picking up the letter Papa had left for him.
âCalm? Calm?! Papa has been missing for nine hours! Perhaps more!âÂ
Bruce could only hope his stoic demeanour hid his surprise at that fact.Â
âOpen the damn letter so I can analyze how old the ink is!â Even Tim was snapping at him.
Jason scoffed, impatient. âCome on, read the damn thing, old man!âÂ
âAloud, Father,â Damian demanded, a dagger ready as a mild threat.
Bruce began to read.
âDear Bruce,
âI have thought about this a long time.Â
âI love our family. I adore our boys more than anything in this world. Don't you dare try to tell our boys anything less. Although, I do suppose I won't be seeing any of you for quite some while.Â
âOur boys are my world. Since you took in our sweet little Dickie, I have dedicated my-unfortunate omegan circumst Since you took me as your husband in accordance with your fatherâs will, I have dedicated myself to being your omega, which was a thankless task to be honest. As a young teenager, I was promised to a boy who showed up to our wedding, refused to consummate it, and left me for ten years only to find he was still a boy, but now he thought dressing up as a hero would be the solution to his problems.
âAfter being left to pick up the pieces of both Wayne Enterprises and my parentsâ business, I then was surprised with child after child, that of which you barely parented, preferring your vigilantism to any parental duties your charges incurred. As well, there was the case of our beloved Damian, but I believe I've told you enough of my thoughts on his circumstance in person.Â
âStill, I have never ceased to love my boys with every part of my soul. I only stayed for their sake. I already know this marriage was but a formality to you, so you may have already filed this away, or it may not even be you reading it. Perhaps one of our sons found this letter first. Even so, I have only stayed in this marriage for our sons.
âAll has been prepared, you won't have to lift a finger. I've been working with Lucius and Tim, although neither knew my true intentions. Tim is especially blameless. I manipulated him into playing along with my scheme when he was completely unaware. The money and authority allotted to my sectors in W.E. have been transferred to those I know you would trust. The documents have already been signed. You didn't bat an eye when I slid them to you. This arrangement is in both of our best interests, and I look forward to experiencing the world now that I can leave this cursed city and enjoy the pleasures this world has to offer.
âWe are divorced.
âWe have no ties to each other now. I do not wish for anything amicable. Preferably, we'd simply be strangers, having never met and not caring for each other.
âPlease do not try to find me. Personally, I suggest you try again with Selina. I know my presence in your life has always hindered your relationship with her.Â
âBest wishes,â
Your name was signed at the bottom. Bruceâs voice broke ever so slightly as he murmured it.
The handwriting was completely you. From the slight curves in the letters that others would miss to the almost open tops of some of your letters. If this was a forgery, Bruce would compliment the similarity. Unfortunately, he knew it was not.
He hadnât been paying you the proper attention you deserved.
After finally bringing Jason back into the pack to the point that he regularly visited, and when he did, it usually didnât become a screaming match. When was the last time he had taken you on a date? He didnât even remember signing whatever papers you thought he did. Whenever you bring him anything to sign, itâs usually about Wayne Enterprises or your own familyâs company. He trusted you on any major decisions you wanted to make on those fronts.
When was the last time heâd treated you like an omega? Or even just renewed your mark?
Had he marked you?
He had to. He was sure. Bruce made sure that all of the children were marked as pack, even the girls and Duke, who were all busy with their own lives right now.Â
Everyone knew an omega was the cornerstone of every pack. A pack didnât exist without an omega.
Bringing his hand up to hold his pounding head, Bruce stared at the note.
âBruce? I need to analyse the ink.âÂ
Right. Tim. The investigation.
With a listless exhale, Bruce handed the note to Tim, who immediately began analyzing everything he could about it.
As he inhaled, his senses filled with the rancid disgust, anger, and sadness of his pack.Â
Damian snarled. âKyle? Father, have youâŚ? You disgust me.âÂ
âAinât that a little hypocritical coming from the bastard of the family?â Jason quipped. His grip was all too tense on his pocket knife as he tried to spin it in his fingers.
It clinked to the floor.Â
Dick joined in the accusations. âJason, werenât you out making a deal with Selina just a week ago? What if Papa saw that and thought you were replacing him?âÂ
âAre we not going to address the fact that apparently Bruce didnât even try to consummate his marriage? To an omega? Like, what did he do during heats? I donât think Iâve ever seen him take off for a heat. Also, Dick, youâre not entirely blameless too. Thereâs a section crossed out mentioning you.â Tim said, running the letter in the Bat Computer systems.
Dick pushed through the others, trying to crane his neck over Timâs shoulder to read it.Â
âEver since⌠sweet little Dickie?â Dickâs face fell. Bruce caught the shimmer of wetness well up in his eyes.
âPapa would not know how to evade us so thoroughly on his own. Drake, you are specifically mentioned in the letter. Youâre the reason we canât find him.â And Damian was blaming Tim now.
Jason took a swing at Bruce.Â
Bruce didnât dodge. His head whipped with the impact to his cheek. It burnt.
âWhat the fuck, old man? God, if youâre this despondent when youâre in bed with him, I canât blame him for running away.â
When Bruce looked down at himself, he saw his knuckles whiten with how tight his fists were.Â
Bruce Wayne is a man of social elegance. Batman is the definition of discipline and restraint.
He took a swing at Jason.Â
A successful one at that, winding the man.
This was going south quickly. Theyâd get nothing done if they continued to blame each other like this. Bruce needed his head back on his shoulders.Â
âWhy are you the only one not mentioned in the letters?â Dick looked as upset as when he quit being Robin.Â
Jason scoffed. âMaybe itâs because Iâm the only one in this stupid family that wasnât a major screwup?â
âIs that how it is? Little wing, take that back right now.âÂ
âHuh? Is Mr. Golden Child upset that he made Papaâs life hel-âÂ
And they were brawling too.
Bruce only had to turn his head a little to see even more conflict.
â-Oh yeah? If Papa never had to take care of a violent demon child like you, he never would have left!â
âDrake, I am going to kill you.â As Bruce massaged his temples, he heard the whizz of a sword being thrown.
Bruce needed his omega.
âEveryone.â Bruce at least attempted to be civil, a bruise surely forming on his cheek.
No one listened.
âBoys!â It wasnât often that Bruce used his alpha voice.
Finally, their heads turned.Â
âWeâre wasting precious time fighting each other. Each punch you try to throw at each other, Papa gets another mile away.â
âThatâs rich, coming from the guy who just winded me,â Jason wisecracked, dodging another of Dickâs escrima.
Bruce ignored him.
âWeâre getting him back.âÂ
Now that got their attention.
You had left at 3 AM, just an hour after Tim got home and started working. Certainly, you had some guilt. Knowing your boy, he'd work until the sleep deprivation shut him down. It had taken everything in you to leave only the letter after removing the chip. You had so much to say to all of them. You couldn't help but love them, well everyone except Bruce.
Being surrounded by some of the worldâs greatest minds had its plusses no matter how exhausting it was to take care of all of them sometimes.Â
Loving your family taught you many things, like how to hide your location from even the Bat Satellite, discreetly get yourself on a private plane, and still not get caught by the many, many vigilantes who would undoubtedly be looking for you, even if your now ex-husband wasnât.
It had been embarrassingly easy to get Bruce to sign the divorce papers as well. He didnât even glance at the print before he signed. You liked to think of it as confirmation that you were in the right for leaving.
You finally knew the meaning behind âliving the lifeâ.Â
For all your wealth and assistants and the million other privileges you possessed, you never had a true chance to really enjoy yourself.Â
You never got a true vacation.Â
Someone always had to be working on a case, so you'd need to make sure they didn't work themselves to death, or someone had to be injured, or someone was added to the family, or someone needed their birthdays and achievements and recitals remembered, and you had to either be there yourself or make sure Bruce was.
Now, you were on one of your familyâs secret private islands with all the luxuries usually afforded to billionaires. You were surprised when you met up with one of your familyâs property managers to see where you could run off to. Apparently, as a wedding gift, your family had gifted you and Bruce a private island complete with a fully serviced personal resort as a honeymoon destination, just to go completely unused.Â
Technically, the island was both yours and Bruceâs property, but now that you served him papers, you had full ownership of the place. So of course, you jetted straight there (Well not exactly straight there, you had a flight straight there while many other decoy jets you employed also flew to random layovers and destinations. One was still moving about to make them think you were actively running from them as well.)
Laying on a superbly comfy bed in a beach side cabana, drink in one hand and book in the other, you let out a long forgotten tension.Â
Scented books were easily your favourite way to read. You had raved about how much more immersive they were to Jason almost every day he was home since obtaining the whole series in its limited edition scented form. After your little break to grab that tropical drink youâve always wanted to try, you opened your book back up to where your bookmark had been.
âWhat? Of course I got all of them. You deserve it.â His breath was hot on my ear as he hugged me from behind.Â
I could only give an awkward laugh. The massive bouquet barely fit in my hands, if it could even be called a bouquet. I felt more like some kind of wedding decoration. Taking a whiff, I lost myself in the sweet smell.
He was already taking it out of my hands, sensing my discomfort. Somehow, he had even readied a vase that could fit all of them too.
Stepping back, he looked me in the eyes. Gently, he caressed my cheek, moving a piece of hair out of my face.
âThere. That looks good.â
My face felt hot. I had to have more composure than this! We werenât even dating for real. I canât let myself get attached so easily.
âWell, thank you, Will, but you really didnât have to.â I gave a small smile, doing my best to keep my voice steady.
He took a step forward, and I retreated without thinking. My back met the wall.
That damn smirk.Â
âOh, I donât have to do anything, sweetheart,â he growled.Â
He leant in, and-
Something cut into your senses.
You were immediately alert.Â
They had found you. Well, you guessed you were pushing it when you were thinking you could go undiscovered for another whole day.
The smell of musk, almost completely covering up the warm scent of honey and violets. Jason.
He was behind you, reading over your shoulder. When you looked closer, he seemed gruffer and he had eye bags for once. For how terrible he was at taking care of himself some times, youâd never seen him look this bad.
His tone was casual, like heâd walked in on you getting in some reading while you baked instead of having chased you across half the world to find you.Â
âHey Pops. I see you're enjoying yourself. I see you even got yourself the newest one. Online, they've been saying this one's nice and fluffy with a strong, doting alpha. âGets why you'd go for that sorta thing.â
âJason? What are you doing here? I do hope Bruce at least read you my note,â you trailed off at the end.
His large frame embraced you, purring with delight. âYep, it's me. Ahh, I've missed you so much. You smell great, omega. And yeah, we heard that shitty note. You have a horrible sense of humor, Papa.â
You attempted to squirm out of his grasp, but he stopped you easily. âOmega, still.â And your body obeyed. You hadn't been treated like this by them before. Your pack never really embraced traditional pack structure in the first place with so many alphas in it.
Nudging his nose into your scent gland, he smiled into your skin. âGoddamn, you don't even have a mark under all those stupid clothes and scent blockers. You're such a great omega, you know that? Yâknow, if you were having all those problems with B, you coulda just told us.â
How many of them were here? For all you knew, you were already completely surrounded. The only thing you wanted to bet on was that Bruce hadnât come himself. He probably didnât even care. He probably handed the note off and let the boys read it themselves.
Another familiar smell. Another one of your pups, smelling of smoky wood, caramel, and a hint of something like what you think electricity would smell like.Â
Dickie, your first.Â
He always smelled as lively as the circus he grew up in, but the unusual dominance of the smoky part of his scent gave away his underlying frustration.Â
âYeah, Papa! I mean, love the island vacation theme and all, but you really shoulda just let us schedule this for you.â Dick chuckled.Â
What were these crazy kids even talking about? That was definitely not a joke. You told Bruce you left forever.Â
âBoys, I love you, but I need space, okay? Especially from your father.â You attempted to keep a straight face while Jason kept nuzzling you like some overgrown puppy.
And thereâs Damian.
You almost always smelt him before you saw him. Of course, he had grown out of it, but the milky notes in his scent had always been a neon billboard of a fragrancy to your omega instincts. It was the smell of a pup. Your pup.Â
(It always haunted you in the back of your mind that, no, he wasnât truly your pup. You had always looked past that.)
The masala chai was familiar, but the new smells of caramel and cedar under it werenât as so. Perhaps Dickâs own scent was rubbing off on him. You always knew Dick as one of Damianâs closest father figures. He outgrew the smell of milk, but not the habit of broadcasting his scent before greeting you.
âBaba, you arenât listening to them.â Damian walked right up to you where you were restrained on the bed. From the little smirk on his face, he didnât seem opposed to how clingy his brothers were to you.
He picked up the scented sweater you brought from home. "So you do still love us," Damian murmured, bringing it to his neck to re-scent it himself.
Dick chirped, âWe know you're hyper-independent, but arranging a trip like this has got to be stressful on an omega. Goes to show just why you left Dad.â He piled on top, earning a huff from Jason.Â
âWeâve got a whole plan and everything Papa. Don't worry. From now on, we'll take you on a week-long vacation every month to a different place each time or wherever you want! You'll get to see the world and have your favourite people beside you. I went through a bunch of security footage on our way here, and I compiled a spreadsheet and everything with all of the activities that make you smile and ideas on where we should go. Just believe me, youâre gonna love it!â Tim's voice.
Tim decided he was just going to sit on top of the pile his brothers made, perching somewhere on your hip. When had he even gotten close enough to climb on?
He hadnât been able to sneak up on you in a while. You thought you had gotten parsing that old velvet, sage, and lavender scent down to a science.
Dick gestured at Damian, clearly trying to beckon him. âCome on, Dami! You donât gotta act strong. We gotta show Papa we love him!â
âTt.â Damian was probably scoffing, but you had three other cuddly alpha boys blocking your sight.
You yelped, although you should have anticipated the sudden increase in weight. Somehow, they were perfectly nestled on the bed to both get them to all fit on the queen-sized mattress and not be crushing your ribs or anything else important or painful. These crazy kids. Maybe you should tell them-
The smell of soil, figs, and leather filled your nose.
You knew that smell. That oppressive, suffocating, wonderful aroma. The redolence you fell in love with as a child.Â
The one promised to you for forever.
When was the last time you had smelled Bruceâs scent without a scent blocker?
Teeth sunk into your scent gland.
You screamed, thrashing.Â
Jason was holding your head to make space for Bruce to bite your neck.Â
So this was their plan. You had to admit it was smart.Â
You never guessed Bruce would go along with something like this. He didnât want you. He never wanted to be your alpha.
âBruce?! What are you doing?!â Damn, that hurt.
It felt as though the place where his teeth penetrated was on fire.Â
Tears welled up in your eyes. You had never taken a true alphaâs mark. The one that meant you were theirs for life. That you were bound to him.
When you raised your head, you saw Bruce panting, lips crimson with your blood. In his hand, he held a scent blocker, stained with blood from a reckless removal. That explains how he snuck up on you.
You already felt faint. You knew the symptoms. A claiming.
As you went limp, you gave a wry huff of laughter. Now you were being claimed? After all this time?
They surrounded you as your vision dulled, and when you fell from the soft mattress, strong hands held you. Even so, you tried to fight the inevitable oblivion that always came with an omegaâs claiming, a built in opportunity for an alpha to secure their omega without further struggle.Â
The voices around you blurred, but you heard bits and pieces.
âHeâs okay..?â
â...all arranged at home.â
âRight where he belongsâŚâ
â...should have done this sooner.â
The last thing you felt before you went unconscious was the soft press of something to your scent gland. Lips? Someone trying to kiss you?Â
Bruce?
âTime to go home, omega.â
