I keep thinking about how Sonic Prime handled Shadow. How they not only had a good voice for him, the were able to make him someone that is analytical, intelligent, competitive, and very cut and dry with solutions. But they also gave him dry, witty humor and a little garnish of feral energy. (Thinking back to how he deadass bit the regulator off of Sonic's hand mid-punch. That is lawless behavior, sir.)

I know the show has some flaws, but with Shadow they fucking UNDERSTOOD the assignment. They were at the class. They studied for every exam. They stayed after class. They got straight A's. They aced it.
