3. Cape Town Water Crisis (2017-2018):

The Cape Town water crisis in South Africa was a period of severe water shortage in the Western Cape region, most notably affecting the City of Cape Town. While dam water levels had been decreasing since 2015, the Cape Town water crisis peaked during mid-2017 to mid-2018 when water levels hovered between 14 and 29 percent of total dam capacity.

Historical Significance: The Cape Town Water Crisis, nearly reaching "Day Zero," highlighted the vulnerability of urban areas to water scarcity and the need for water management and conservation.

The relevance to contemporary issues that the crisis serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by water scarcity due to climate change and population growth.

2. The Clean Water Act (1972):

The Clean Water Act is a U.S. legislation enacted in 1972 to restore and maintain clean and healthy waters. The act was a response to increasing public concern for the environment and for the condition of the nation’s waters.

Historical Significance: The Clean Water Act in the United States established regulations to protect and restore water resources, setting water quality standards and regulating pollutant discharges.

The relevance to contemporary issues is that the Act remains a cornerstone of water conservation and regulation.

Historical water events.

Water has played a pivotal role in the history of our planet and in human civilization. Throughout the ages, historical events related to water have influenced societies, economies, and ecosystems, leaving an indelible mark on our shared past.

The Green Revolution (mid-20th century)

Was a period of significant development in agriculture that took place in the mid-20th century, primarily in developing countries. It was characterized by the introduction of high-yield varieties of crops, the use of irrigation and other technological innovations, and the application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Historical Significance: Led by figures like Norman Borlaug, the Green Revolution promoted high-yield crop varieties and modern agriculture techniques, but it also raised concerns about water use in agriculture.

The relevance to contemporary issues is that the Green Revolution's legacy highlights the challenge of balancing food production with sustainable water management.

3. "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck: It indirectly underscores the importance of responsible water use and sustainable agriculture.

The main idea is that injustice exists in various forms perpetrated by capitalist systems. Hope, however, and the ability to endure can help people improve their situation.

While not exclusively focused on water conservation, this classic novel depicts the hardships faced by Dust Bowl-era migrants in California, a region struggling with water scarcity.

The moral of the story is that, in the end, people need to band together to help each other out. Only by working together can individuals hope to survive systems and events that will hurt them.

2. "Cadillac Desert" by Marc Reisner: It delves into the complex relationships between water, power, and the environment, shedding light on the real-world implications of water mismanagement.

Marc Reisner tells many stories of dysfunctional behavior in the appropriation and development of water resources.  States overlying the Ogallala Aquifer purposefully overdraft the groundwater, knowing that they will run out of water in 25 to 50 years. 

In fact, this non-fiction work offers a detailed historical account of water management and policy in the American West.

Literary Analysis.

Hereinafter these literary works provide insight into the importance of water and the consequences of its mismanagement.

"The Water Knife" by Paolo Bacigalupi: The narrative highlights the consequences of unchecked water consumption and the potential for conflict over this precious resource.

This treats themes like water shortage and drought, climate change, corporate greed, social hierarchy, refugee crises and fabricated arcologies.

This novel also explores a future where water is scarce, and powerful entities control its distribution.

The moral of the story is the story is steeped in ethical debates about humankind and its obligation to the planet that nurtures it.

How did I save water yesterday?

Yesterday was holiday so I stayed at home all day, that's why I had a lot of time to reserve some of my daily water uses. Most common preservation action that I started doing is reducing water time usage in almost every time, for example, turning hours of shower to just a few minutes at my journal is an excellent example of how a little action can cause a huge impact on water bills.
