Daily updates on new cases, recoveries, and deaths. -Government incentives to stay home. -Barely anyone on the roads. -People wearing masks and gloves outside. -Essential service worker may be terrified to go to work but they still continue to serve their communities -Medical field workers are afraid to go home to their families. - SINOPHOBIA IS RAMPANT IN THE U.S., EUROPE, AND AUSTRALIA. -This is the Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) Pandemic, declared March 11th, 2020.

May 3, 2020

- We are at 47 days of social isolation.

- The dollar is worth $ 5.32, the euro $ 5.77 and the pound $ 6.54.

- Schools have been closed since mid March and are teaching remotely on-line. This will continue for the rest of the school year.

- There are lines / tapes inside the stores to keep people 6 feet apart.

- Bars and restaurants only for home delivery & pick-up.

- Parks, beaches and walk-in places are not accessible to the public.

- All sports competitions have been cancelled.

- All festivals and entertainment events have been banned.

- Weddings, family celebrations and birthdays have been cancelled. Funerals limited to 10-20 people.

- People are doing drive-by parades to celebrate birthdays!

- Young kids can’t understand why they can only see grandparents & other extended family and friends on a screen or thru a window if someone visits in person.

- Hugs and kisses are not given.

- The churches are closed or online.

- We have to stay away from each other more than a meter.

- Shortage of masks and gloves in hospitals.

- There are fewer ventilators than there should be.

- People are wearing masks, some places even REQUIRE that you wear them to enter! People are even making their own masks for sale or donation to medical facilities!

- Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, antibacterial wipes and anything Lysol or Clorox is in short supply and limited per person.... IF you can even find them!

- Stores are closing early to disinfect everything. (24 hour stores are even closing by 9pm)

- Store check outs, pharmacies and even fast food drive thru windows have added plexiglass between employee and customer. Have to reach around or under to pay!

- You can't find isopropyl alcohol easily. .. supply per person is limited.

- Australia, USA and Europe have closed their borders.

- Western Australia has been divided into 9 territories & an instant $1,500 fine issued for crossing the border without a valid reason. (Transport workers, Essential services etc)

- No one is travelling for leisure. Airports empty. Tourism has the worst crisis in history.

- SINOPHOBIA IS STILL RAMPANT IN THE U.S., EUROPE, AND AUSTRALIA.

2019

I have neglected this for awhile lol...

Let’s make up for that.

Like any year, 2018 was filled with ups and downs. For 2019, I want to keep it simple and focus on balance (especially grad school-life balance), health, building meaningful relationships, and keeping myself motivated and inspired.

i always say this on instagram but everyone should get library cards! it’s free and then download “the libby” app for free ebooks and audio books to borrow! i literally read 4 books every month now and i’m saving money from buying books. i also just downloaded the app “kanopy” which you can watch a bunch of movies with your library card. it has a bunch of criterion collection movies, independent movies and a bunch of movies netflix or hulu doesn’t have :-)

Now, by fake I mean: the alligator wasn’t real, it was put there as a prank by some Youtubers, to record people’s reactions. So the guy a) survived, and b) reacted as he would (AKA: fought a fucking alligator to save his friend) had it been real, because neither of them knew it wasn’t.

With Stephen Hawking’s passing, today is a sad day for science. But amongst all his praise and achievements in the fields of physics, for me personally his biggest achievement was making a grand, full life despite the terrible misfortune of being diagnosed with ALS. It would have been easy to become a recluse, embittered with the hand he’d been dealt, a brilliant misanthrope. But this was a man who maintained his sense of humor and refused to be mentally beaten. Three years ago, he told One Direction fans that the theory of alternate universes could provide a reality where Zayn Malik was still in the band. He conducted an interview with John Oliver where his factual, deadpan delivery was funnier than his interviewer, managing the cheekiest grins as he did so. And let us not forget that Stephen Hawking is the only person to have ever portrayed themselves in a Star Trek episode (Next Generation, “Descent, Part 1″), where he appeared alongside actors portraying Einstein and Sir Isaac Newton, whom he proceeded to defeat in poker.

Hawking’s observations on black hole radiation, string theory, alternate universes and artificial intelligence are things that will probably forever remain beyond most of us. But we could all learn a thing or two from his humanity.

Did you know, you can quit your job, you can leave university? You aren’t legally required to have a degree, it’s a social pressure and expectation, not the law, and no one is holding a gun to your head. You can sell your house, you can give up your apartment, you can even sell your vehicle, and your things that are mostly unnecessary. You can see the world on a minimum wage salary, despite the persisting myth, you do not need a high paying job. You can leave your friends (if they’re true friends they’ll forgive you, and you’ll still be friends) and make new ones on the road. You can leave your family. You can depart from your hometown, your country, your culture, and everything you know. You can sacrifice. You can give up your $5.00 a cup morning coffee, you can give up air conditioning, frequent consumption of new products. You can give up eating out at restaurants and prepare affordable meals at home, and eat the leftovers too, instead of throwing them away. You can give up cable TV, Internet even. This list is endless. You can sacrifice climbing up in the hierarchy of careers. You can buck tradition and others’ expectations of you. You can triumph over your fears, by conquering your mind. You can take risks. And most of all, you can travel. You just don’t want it enough. You want a degree or a well-paying job or to stay in your comfort zone more. This is fine, if it’s what your heart desires most, but please don’t envy me and tell me you can’t travel. You’re not in a famine, in a desert, in a third world country, with five malnourished children to feed. You probably live in a first world country. You have a roof over your head, and food on your plate. You probably own luxuries like a cellphone and a computer. You can afford the $3.00 a night guest houses of India, the $0.10 fresh baked breakfasts of Morocco, because if you can afford to live in a first world country, you can certainly afford to travel in third world countries, you can probably even afford to travel in a first world country. So please say to me, “I want to travel, but other things are more important to me and I’m putting them first”, not, “I’m dying to travel, but I can’t”, because I have yet to have someone say they can’t, who truly can’t. You can, however, only live once, and for me, the enrichment of the soul that comes from seeing the world is worth more than a degree that could bring me in a bigger paycheck, or material wealth, or pleasing society. Of course, you must choose for yourself, follow your heart’s truest desires, but know that you can travel, you’re only making excuses for why you can’t. And if it makes any difference, I have never met anyone who has quit their job, left school, given up their life at home, to see the world, and regretted it. None. Only people who have grown old and regretted never traveling, who have regretted focusing too much on money and superficial success, who have realized too late that there is so much more to living than this.

Grad School Update

I was blessed to get accepted into one of my top choices back in December. With so much time between now and the start of the school year, I’ve been researching more about the school and planning ahead. However, the more I look into the program, the more I overthink my decision. I really like SMU’s program; I’m 99.99% sure I’m going there, but there are some things I’m concerned about.

TL;DR: Hefty price tag with limited resources (compared to larger universities) and without the perceived “prestige”. I’m worried I won’t be getting what I pay for.

SMU Pros:

Location California ‘nuff said. Weather, diversity, and top medical centers. There’s a reason why it’s one of the most competitive states for DPT programs. It’s also nice that I could save on living expenses by staying at home and commuting.

Small Cohort There are only about 36-38 seats in the program per year. I enjoy small classes because it allows personalized attention from faculty.

Curriculum and Outcomes I believe the program has the most clinical hours in the Bay Area. The last six months is a full time internship so it’s an opportunity to hone your skills and network for a job. You also pay an internship fee instead of the full tuition. The curriculum is structured where you are exposed to relevant clinical/hands-on experience after didactic learning to reinforce concepts. Most importantly, they have a consistently high pass rate for the boards. Their 2016 class had a 100% first time pass rate.

Affiliations and Partnerships SMU is affiliated with Alta Bates Medical Center and Sutter Health. Although it is not a teaching or academic hospital, it is still nice to have this affiliation and be part of a large hospital network/health system. The school also has partnerships with top hospitals in the Bay Area such as Stanford and UCSF for clinicals.

Mission and Values I applied to SMU because my background and motivations for pursuing PT aligned with the school’s mission and values. Community service and outreach especially to medically underserved areas are highly emphasized. Being in Oakland, there will be opportunities to work with diverse communities. There are also annual international service trips to South America with the nursing, podiatry, PA, and OT students.

Faculty While attending their info session, I got the vibe that they really cared about student success. Most of the faculty are still practicing and some are involved in research. Since I’m entertaining the idea of specializing, it’s good to know that there are a few members who are also faculty members in residency programs at Kaiser and Stanford. It also doesn’t hurt that the vice president of the program has been awarded by APTA a couple times.

Local Reputation Their DPT program has a great reputation in the PT world especially in NorCal/the East Bay. Clinicians and students I’ve met from the program seemed to enjoy their experience and highly recommend it. According to a few PTs, SMU students are more “clinically ready” than their UCSF/SFSU counterparts across the Bay. But then again, a handful of students does not reflect the whole program, and these were just opinions from a few clinicians.

MARC There’s a fully-equipped motion and gait analysis lab dedicated to research on campus. This is impressive for a small school that is more clinically-oriented than research. As someone considering doing PT/movement research while in school, this facility is a plus.

SMU Cons:

Expensive PT school is expensive regardless, but SMU’s tuition is higher than average. I hope the debt would be manageable.

Graduate Assistanship There is none as far as I know.

Campus The campus is across from a medical center and shares some of the facilities with them. Though facilities are up to date and in good condition, space is limited. I don’t remember much from the tour, but I don’t recall the campus having a lot of study spaces for students or even a student center. The anatomy lab is down by the basement (students call it “The Dungeon”). The library and student gym are also tiny. For the price I’ll be paying, I expected a much nicer campus with more student amenities.

Prestige First off, I believe that prestige does not matter in the real world and is highly subjective. However, just like my issues with the campus, it would be nice to have that perceived prestige given the steep tuition the university charges.Big name schools like USC or Columbia can charge that much because of their history, research, and branding. SMU? Not so much… Although they have a great DPT program, SMU is virtually unknown outside of the East Bay. It’s not a bad school by any means; it’s a university almost entirely dedicated to graduate health sciences with the exception of their BSN program. As a result, there is a smaller student body. In addition, since it is not a research university, faculty are not pressured to publish which keeps the university low key in the academic world. Instead, faculty place emphasis on educating students (which is a pro). I know it’s silly and immature to even focus on trivial matters like prestige, but I find it a bit ridiculous that the school can charge as much as Columbia.

Bottom line, it’s a hefty price tag with limited resources (compared to larger universities) and without the perceived “prestige”. I understand that it doesn’t matter as long as the program is accredited with high graduation, employment, and NPTE pass rates. In the end, we’ll all be DPTs, but I’m just a little worried that I won’t be getting what I pay for. And yes, I know I’m being a little irrational.

2017

Despite the stress, meltdowns, and uncertainties, 2017′s highlights were certainly brighter than recent years.

Brace-less! After three long years, I finally got my braces off in February! I no longer have to worry about food getting stuck between the wires, wearing rubber bands, and people thinking I’m in high school or an undegrad.

Employment! I left my job in 2016 and was unemployed at the beginning of 2017. I was happy to finally find employment in a relevant field in June. Although it’s been stressful, I have wonderful coworkers and a steady paycheck!

Groomsmen! My cousin announced his engagement in February and set his wedding date in July of the same year... I flew out to Ontario, Canada the day after I took my GREs to be part of his wedding. It was my first time as a groomsmen. I was surprised but honored that he asked me since we don’t see each other often because of the distance. It was a beautiful wedding, and I was more than happy to play a small role in it.

Grad School! Probably the biggest surprise of all was that I not only got into grad school but also one of my top choices. I received a phone call on in mid-December from admissions while at work. I still can’t believe it, and it really hasn’t hit me just yet. I honestly was not expecting to get in this round given how competitive the programs are. An acceptance validated all the unpaid internships and volunteer work as well as the long (and expensive) night classes I took while working. I’m still waiting to hear from more schools, but I’m pretty much committed to this current program.

It’s crazy to think that I was able to accomplish most of my goals in 2017. It took a lot of hard work and some luck. There were still a few areas where I came up short, and I hope to address those this year. 2018 also presents new challenges and uncertainties. This year, I would like to focus more on self-care and the relationships I have with people. I hope to do a little traveling before I start my rigorous program and reconnect with people I care about.

2018 - I can’t say I’m ready for you, but you’ve already arrived lol. 2017 pushed me out of my comfort zone a bit, and I’m sure you’re going to take it to the next level.

Two weeks ago, I went to North Carolina for a grad school interview. It was not the most eventful trip, but I did come back with interesting stories.

I was offered a Maserati as my rental for an extra $50/day. Given that I was in a small(ish) city in NC with the possibility of snow, no thanks.

Speaking of snow, a snowstorm hit the Southeast on the day of my interview. According to locals, they haven’t seen this much snow in about 20 years...

Ended up taking a Lyft to my destination up in the mountains, where we experienced more snow and witnessed a few weather-related accidents along the way... My Lyft driver was a pretty nice guy and even gave me his phone number in case I got stranded up in the mountains after my interview.

Half the applicants and one faculty member was unable to make it to the interview and a handful were late due to the conditions. Oh, and we experienced a power outage before we began. Safe to say any nerves I had going in disappeared at this point.

Like my Lyft driver predicted, I was unable to get a ride back to Asheville because of the weather conditions and the fact that the university was located in a small rural area, where Lyft and Uber are basically non-existent. Fortunately, a couple guys I interviewed with offered to help me out. I was able to hitch a ride back with a fellow interview from South Carolina. During the ride, we talked about various things including our upbringing in our respective hometowns and our love for Childish Gambino. Who knew an Asian kid from the Bay Area and a white guy from the Deep South had similar tastes in music? This is why I love hip hop. Shoutout to Blake!

My flight got cancelled so I had to spend an extra day in Asheville. I was hoping to explore, but everything was closed because of the snow... Well, everything except for Waffle House. My hotel was right to next one. Scattered, smothered, covered, topped please.

On the morning of my flight, I had issues again getting a ride via Lyft or Uber even though I was no longer in a rural area. Apparently, ride sharing is fairly new in Asheville as well... Luckily, a driver by the name of Alexis came through. He’s a music promoter by day and a Lyft driver by night. He showed me a few videos he’s been a part of. And with that, I’ll end this post with this gem below (Note: He’s the guy in the white shirt at the beginning. Oh and the interview went well. I think I could’ve done a better job highlighting my experiences, but I’m glad I now have some grad school interview experience under my belt. The campus is beautiful, the facilities are new, and the faculty seems to care about their students. The program director even emailed me to follow up to see if I’d made it back down the mountains.
