“Yeah… I could’ve…” he admitted as he rubbed the injured joint. “… But as much as a literal pain as you’ve been…” he chuckled, “… Guess I couldn’t let this crazy thing take you.”

Tamatoa leaned down to look at the pile of ash again, and with a single breath, he scattered the dust into the salty sea breeze to be scattered.

“But…” he went on, “this does still leave ya without a home. You don’t have to worry about her finding you ever again, so you can live your life up here on the surface without worry. Just gotta find you a village, right?”

He wasn’t expecting that either.

“What the hell!?” The crab stepped back, shaking the dust from his foot and antenna as he stared at the spot the woman had been laying. He’d been alive for thousands of years but that? … That had to have been the most bizarre or coincidental thing he had ever seen.

Only the annoying pain of the knife in his joint brought him back to his senses.

“Ugh… Yeah… Sure kid,” he muttered as he lowered himself to the ground. He was still a bit confused by the suddenness of all of this but… seemed like everything turned out alright, didn’t it?

“Doesn’t look like your mom’s gonna be a problem anymore.”

Tamatoa plucked a spear off of his shell and tossed it down at her feet. The golden blade was rough, but plenty sharp enough for Kanae to slice through her own hair… Probably better that she do it than the giant crab though… As dexterous as he was, a small blade near a neck could potentially end badly.

As she did that, he leaned down and brushed an antenna against the mother’s face.

“And what should I do with her?”

He screeched, more in surprise than actual pain as the blade sunk into one of the joints where his armor was weakest… but thankfully, being a giant crab against a human, it would take a lot more than that to stop him.

His claw snapped shut around the mother’s leg, dragging her right back to him, and he maintained that grip until he finally got to dry land.

“Alright…” he hissed, incredibly annoyed with how the day’s events had unfolded… “Unknown human falls in my lair… I get zapped… end up carrying her halfway across Lalotai… and then you give me the world’s most annoying splinter… I have HAD IT.”

He pulled the two humans apart, then pinned the mother down with just enough pressure under his dactyl to keep her in place.

“Peace and quiet! That’s all I wanted! You humans have gotten to be WAY more trouble than you’re worth!”
