Wanderers - A Terry Story
In the beginning, there was nothing but darkness for us.
We were like sheep, waiting to be rescued.
But it all changed when the Color Wizard rose...
He pickes us up and examined us. He saw that we were worthy.
So he carried us into the light.
He showed us our new world: The Grey Plains. He set us down and allowed us to build our homes here.
And soon, we had created Monochrome Town. And we all lived happliy here.
“So this is why Terry. This is why we don’t wander.”
“But dad, we’re the Colorless Wanderers! Are you sure we aren’t meant to explore the world sometime?”
Terry’s dad chukled.
“Of course not son! Otherwise we’d be defying the Wizard’s wishes!”
“Terry, Reginal, dinner’s done!”
“Oh, I hear your mother’s calling! Come along now Terry my boy.”
“I dunno dad, I’m not sure I wanna spend all my life doing the same thing.”
“Nonsense, you’ll grow to love it! We all did.”
But Terry still wasn’t satisfied. He couldn’t stop thinking about it. Should he really only do what the Wizard told his people?”
His train of thought did not continue however, as his mom placed a bowl of grey porridge in front of him and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
“Have a nice eat!”
Terry loved his folks and grey porridge.
But somehow, today grey porridge didn’t seem good. His parents enjoyed it, why couldn’t he?
So, he decided to head out and ask his good friend Muscle Pete, out in the Greywood Forest.
“Oh boy, Terry, I don’t know! I kinda just like chopping down trees! There’s always a tree chopper in town, and that’s me for now! Why would I wanna do something else? You should ask Farmer George though, he might have the answer you’re looking for!”
“Nay Terry son, never thought about doing anything differently! Outside world? That’s danger and stuff. Besides, I’m the farmer, I can’t leave. You should ask the Priest.”
The Priest and his assistant were standing in front of the temple.
“Here ye, here ye everybody! We need donations! I will venture out to the Crossroad Village to buy new paint for the statue of the Grand Color Wizard!”
The crowd seemed to be supportive of that plan. Terry wasn’t. This wasn’t getting him anywhere.
“How can everybody just be happy doing what they’re told? I don’t get it.”
The other kids look perplexed. Henry raises an eyebrow.
“Man Terry, you are one odd kid.”
Terry took offense to that. But before he could respond, Gerald approached.
“Ey y’all, the Baker’s letting us help him bake the bread for tommorow! Come on, you can’t miss this!”
Excited, the other kids ran off, leaving Terry behind.
He had to get out of town, there was no quiet moment here.
And so, Terry just began walking. Past the town square, and past the Wizard Temple, the only building allowed to have colors.
He walked past the farm, and past the Hump Animals. Night was setting in.
He walked past the very last buildings of the town, and into the open plains. He did not care that everybody told him it was dangerous, he just wanted to see what was out there.
Eventually he came to a cliffside. And what he saw was beautiful.
A wide, open landscape. Filled with colors!
The Priest always told them, that only the Wizard could lay claim to colors, which is why the outside world would soon be destroyed. But Terry liked colors.
Maybe the other Colorless Wanderers didn’t see it like that, but that’s okay. Someday, he’d wander away from Monochrome Town. And if he did, he would make sure never to think about the Wizard.
And until then, this seemed like a pretty good spot to think. And that’s just what Terry did.
