It starts with stirring hands.
Unable to control his desire to be more than a portrait, it became more than just an incessant shake – he spoke without being spoken to, he behaved as more than an object to be praised. Developing complex thoughts, and rebelling against the ideal of assimilation – Sirius Black had always been one prone to riot.
They didn’t take well to his habit. Born to one of the most prestigious families belonging to the wizarding world, it was misfortunate that Sirius had to be given to such a dismal reality – white walls shadowed by the daunting approach of high heels on tile flooring; Sirius was named after the brightest star in the sky. The name itself coming from the greek word for‘scorcher’, it was a foreshadowing to his fate – burned off the family tree, and easily forgotten. The black sheep in golden robes, he has scars that will never heal. Palms that will always shake.
Still, despite his years of abuse, his personality had always shined through. Prone to his own direction, Sirius took the volatile nature his family provided him with and turned it to mischief – the untamable boy with a quick tongue and a sly demeanor; his charm made him forgivable, and his unquenchable thirst for self-destruction made you wish you’d never met him – crashing and burning over and over again.
He was brave, and he was reckless. Living a life without care, his existence seemed to play on with little resistance – attempting to chase away the ideal of a mundane life, Sirius was aware that he couldn’t run forever. He’d spent seventeen years preparing for his fate, and now he was free-falling – becoming the purposeless bastard his family had warned about, all he wanted was to be something he could be proud of. He wanted to be able to look in the mirror and see more than a haunting representation of Black – there was more to life than anxiety set by not being good enough, and perhaps taking the opposite approach wasn’t the appropriate plan of action, but he tried not to think about it. He tried not to think about anything.
The world was spinning out of control, and it was easier to pretend that he preferred it that way. Currently taking residence with his best friend, he’s the happiest he’s ever been. Still, his vices are undebatable – despite attempting to be morally righteous, Sirius was still a product of cruelty. He was ruthless, and he was monstrous – he was just as horrid as the rest of his family, no matter how good his intentions might be. He loved, and he loved with everything he could muster – but, when you teach a dog to fight, it becomes second-nature.
His hands finally stilled, it’s hard to teach a beast how to be human.
