Invisible Children's Defection Fliers
Leveraging their years of experience in oil and gas exploration and extraction, Texas Energy Mutual, LLC operates projects in Texas and Oklahoma. Texas Energy Mutual, LLC emphasizes corporate responsibility in its business practice, and as such, has assisted a number of organizations working to achieve world peace, including Invisible Children. The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) is a rebel group of abducted soldiers in the Central African region. The leadership of the LRA rules through intimidation and fear, convincing LRA soldiers, many of whom are very young, that they cannot return home since they won’t be accepted. While many of these child soldiers are tired of war, they are unwilling to go home out of fear of rejection. Invisible Children distributes defection fliers by land and air to strategic locations, targeting LRA fighters. The fliers are emotional and practical messages encouraging soldiers to defect and showing them how to surrender safely. The fliers direct them to “Safe Reporting Sites” where they can be received by local authorities. The fliers also contain photos of former soldiers who surrendered and were reunited with their families. Since its inception, Invisible Children has distributed over 1.4 million fliers across the Central African Republic (CAR), the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and South Sudan. The fliers have been printed in seven languages and in 24 different variations. Based in San Diego, California, and receiving feedback from personnel on the ground in CAR and the DRC, the organization reacts to developments in the affected regions, designing fliers with updated texts and showing recent escapees.
