Textile Hive x Ace Hotel Present: Illuscious

To kick off New York Fashion Week, Textile Hive (a physical, digital and contextual collection of over 40,000 antique and handmade textiles spanning fifty countries and 200 years of design history) has teamed up with Ace Hotel to present an art installation titled Illuscious. Textile Hive has served as a vital source of inspiration for fashion and interior designers globally and this will be the first time the collection has been exhibited in the city.

The installation incorporates charming and vibrant fabrics that are enhanced by informative EO2 digital screens (provided by Electric Objects) to give the viewer a taste of what the collection hosts. See below for a peek and make sure to stop by the gallery open now to February 28.

Portland

Andrea Aranow has been collecting fabrics from all over the world for the past sixty years. Her textile collection traces her life of travel and exploration, bringing together an archive of material beauty and pattern that has contributed to collections at The British Museum and inspired fashion houses ranging from Ralph Lauren to UNIQLO. As a maker and academic, Aranow’s work has included everything from designing snakeskin suits for Jimi Hendrix to ethnographic research in Peru, China and Japan. Through the years of expatriate explorations with her family, her son Caleb Sayan inherited her obsession for pattern, fabric and material weight.

New York City

On March 13, Cynthia Alberto helped Ace Hotel New York kick off Studio Visits — a quarterly pop-up that invites artists and makers to bring their studio practice to the lobby for a day. For this first iteration, Cynthia introduced the public to the art of weaving, using a floor loom, lap loom and custom dining table loom. During the event, local artist Chi Nguyen asked Cynthia some questions about her life and practice. Here’s Chi:

I sat down with Cynthia to learn more about her upcoming project “Follow the Weave” and her excitement in going back to the Philippines for the first time in 30 years. We talked about the two Americas we both experienced as immigrants—the one we tried to assimilate into and the one we both tried to break out of. What did “home” mean to us when we have more than one? How do we use our work to find ourselves and our way back home?

Eye candy from Sheila Hicks Caleb & I had the pleasure of attending the opening of Sheila's show of thirteen small weavings and assorted "memory bundles" last week in NYC. What treasures, both the very vital creator herself and her latest weavings! Her work has always resonated with me, perhaps because of the shared experience of formative time among the sheep in Peru: the luxe of softly spun wool, the adjunct of objects in their natural shapes, the fibers themselves clearly exposed by the structured tapestries. Textile Designed for Peace

Designed and produced for the United Nations Security Council Chamber, this textile is one of the most culturally significant wallcoverings acquired by the museum. The material was used to cover the walls and for draperies in the United Nation’s first permanent quarters in New York City. Following a period of great international turmoil the Security Council Chamber was gifted to the United Nations by Norway, and since 1952 has been the meeting place for world leaders to come together to unite their strength in order to maintain peace and security.

This sample is a small section of the complete design which contains symbolic motifs including anchors of faith, growing wheat of hope, and hearts of charity. The fabric is a rayon satin damask produced by Joh. Petersen AS in Oslo, Norway. While none of the fabric originally installed in the chamber remains, this is an unused piece of the 1951 fabric given to the mill by a former employee, and gifted to the Cooper Hewitt by the Petersen family and Royal Norwegian Consulate General.

The Security Council Chamber was designed by Arnstein Arneberg, one of Norway’s most renowned modernist architects, and the fabric used for the wallcovering and draperies was designed by Norwegian textile artist Else Poulsson. While conveying messages of peace, justice, and democracy the Security Council Chamber is representative of mid-century Norwegian art and culture. The focal point of the chamber is a large mural painted by Per Krohg which depicts a phoenix rising from the ashes of violence and struggle, symbolic of the creation of the United Nations following the destruction of World War II. The Poulsson fabric frames this mural and extends to the rear of the chamber, where the wall is covered with a more neutral straw wallcovering.
