i hope in 2017, your anxiety is lower, your self-esteem is higher, your writer’s block or artist’s block goes away, and you can come back on december 31st and say, “hey, that wasn’t so bad.”

Can you spread this around please? I feel like this is relatable to the escalating police brutality and not many people may realize that Native Americans are also included in violent racist acts.
Every 28 Hours (7.10.15): Last night, a black Mississippi farmer was choked to death by a police officer. Jonathan Sanders was exercising his horses, when a white cop approached him, pulled him off his horse, and choked him with a flashlight. Literally no explanation has been provided as to why this unarmed man was stopped, let alone murdered. At the time of this post, at least five other people today alone have been killed by the police. #staywoke #farfromover
CultureTRIBUTE: Amelia Boynton Robinson (1911-2015)
Another icon of the 60s civil rights movement has died. Ms. Boyton was integral to the #Selma march and was badly beaten during the infamous “Bloody Sunday” protest. She was later immortalized on film in the movie Selma by actress Lorraine Toussaint and she walked with President Obama at the #Selma50 March earlier this year.
RIP to a great American and great woman.

Janelle Monáe Vows To ‘Speak Up’ On #BlackLivesMatter
Janelle Monáe has been a vocal supporter of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, joining forces with local activists, pushing for change with her powerful lyrics and even delivering an impromptu speech about the platform’s issue on NBC’s “Today” show (even if it was cut short).
Watch the full interview to see more from Janelle Monáe and Jidenna here.

No Escape From Hollywood Racism had to shorten its name to fit in a hashtag. But No Escape could have just used #FFFFFF, the perfect RGB color code for this movie and also an acronym for the words spoken by anyone watching this bullshit. Extrapolating from the trailer (which is what trailers are for), No Escape is the heroic struggle of a white man to defend his white woman and white girls from filthy foreigners. Every single one of them, apparently. When they printed the script for No Escape, the pages got whiter. If No Escape’s mentality was any more ancient it would have been a better movie, because the white family sailing off the edge of the world would have run into “Here, There Be Dragons” and found some potatoes.

shout out to the vietnamese kids named phuc, dam, bich, son, dat, nga and so much more for enduring the namecalling and jokes about your name; you’re strong and beautiful.
& đông and dủng
lemme tell yall, my mom came to america when she was around 4 y/o and went to school in america and the white kids made jokes about her name becus her name was MyDung. when she was old enough she changed her legal name to a more “acceptable” one becus she was afraid it wouldnt b seen professional in america. she was too embarrassed to say her name out loud. when she did have to, she’d say it quietly. ever since i was a kid i would notice her behavior when ppl asked her name. so yeah fuckin SHOUTOUT to vietnamese kids w/ vietnamese names who get teased, yall amazing
Alright, this post has been going around and I think it’s high time for a lesson in Vietnamese. People who tease foreigners about their names, sit the fuck down and let me show you what those names mean.
_ “Phúc” (Phuc) means phúc đức, phúc hậu, hạnh phúc - kindness, merit and happiness. _ “Đam”, “Đàm” (Dam) mean yên tĩnh, yên lòng, an tâm - tranquility, calmness, relief. _ “Bích” (Bich) means ngọc bích, ngọc lục bảo - emerald, jade (can be understood as both the color and the precious gemstones). _ “Sơn” (Son) means núi, mạnh mẽ và uy nghiêm như núi - mountains, as strong and majestic as the mountains. _ “Đạt” (Dat) means thành đạt, vẻ vang - success, honor, glory. _ “Nga” (Nga) means xinh đẹp, tốt đẹp - beauty, kindness. _ “Đông” (Dong) means mùa đông, hướng đông - winter, East. _ “Dũng” (Dung) means dũng mãnh, anh dũng - strength, power, bravery. _ “Dung” (Dung) means xinh đẹp, yêu kiều - beauty, elegance, grace.
Can you see it? Can you see how beautiful these names are? And you dare compare them to your vulgar profanities?
Names are extremely important in Vietnamese culture. They represent the virtues, qualities, characteristics that parents want their children to possess. They represent the hopes and dreams of Vietnamese parents. THEY REPRESENT A VERY HUMAN BEING.
WHEN YOU TEASE SOMEONE ABOUT THEIR NAME, YOU ARE NOT ONLY INSULTING THEM, YOU ARE MAKING THEM ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES, OF THEIR OWN NAME AND THEIR OWN LANGUAGE, EVEN THEIR OWN ORIGIN.
DO NOT MAKE FUN OF OUR PEOPLE, DO NOT MAKE FUN OF OUR LANGUAGE AND DO NOT MAKE FUN OF OUR CULTURE.
This is what happens when you politely turn down a date. I called the mesa police department. She literally told me to “ignore it, he’ll shut up eventually.” He’s given me 48 hours to change my mind or else he will be making the decision for me. Over 24 of them have passed. I do not know this person. They know exactly where I live and have been watching me for some time now. Please signal boost this. Even if you don’t live in Arizona. I want everyone to be aware that this type of stuff is happening and the police are letting it. I am trapped in my house, and they don’t care. They know this man’s plans to harm me. I am in immediate danger. I am afraid for my life. And the police are letting it happen.
“tbh youre nice and we may not agree on everything but you seem really cool!” haha thats nice mary so what are we talking about here do we disagree on pineapple on pizza or police brutality

Be aware of your Pride and what exactly it is you’re proud of and who you’re throwing under the bus to get that pride.
Love this minus the “It’s almost like he’s not LGBT at all”
That’s the point though- it’s calling out assimilationism and respectability politics and how the mainstream gay rights movement panders to cishet expectations while throwing the rest of us under the bus.
Ok, I get it now, thanks
Masculinity and Mass Shootings in the U.S.
Womanism is for all black women. Not just the ones who went to college and know bell hooks and Audre Lorde by heart. It’s not just for the college educated black women that know big words and know everything about intersectionality. It’s for the black girls who braid hair on the porch. The young black girls who go to the “candy lady’s” house in the hood. The black girl with ADHD and the black girl who’s into cosplay. The black trans girl. The black girl who didn’t graduate from college. The black girl that’s Pagan. The black girl in prison. It’s for the black girls double dutching and for the black girl that is 16 and just found out she’s pregnant. The black woman in a nursing home. The black actress and the black girl that serves you coffee every morning at your favorite diner. It’s for the little black girl that comes home crying saying “Why don’t I have good hair?” I could go on but you get the point. It’s for all of us.
Jeb Bush defunded Planned Parenthood and now Florida is one of the worst states for women’s health
In 2001, Gov. Jeb Bush cut $302,843 for family planning services for poor women through Planned Parenthood in Florida. Now, 25% of women in Florida are uninsured. More than 20% of women in Florida report being in fair or poor health. 20% of Floridian women have no access to a personal doctor or health care provider. And the stats get only more depressing from there.
native Americans are probably in the same danger as black people.
Harriet Tubman was cynical, she would force people to escape against their own will with a gun to their head. She has more flaws than you think.
YEAH, YOU CAN MAKE ANYONE SOUND TERRIBLE IF YOU STRIP AWAY ENOUGH CONTEXT!
YOU MAKE IT SOUND LIKE THERE WERE HAPPY SLAVES WHO WOULD HEAR A CLICK BEHIND THEM AND TURN TO SEE HARRIET TUBMAN SAYING “ESCAPE OR DIE, JERK, YOUR CHOICE.” THAT’S NOT HOW IT WENT DOWN.
HARRIET TUBMAN WAS A CRIMINAL, WHICH I’M OKAY WITH BECAUSE THE LAW SHE WAS BREAKING WAS UNJUST, AND THAT’S WHY SHE PACKED HEAT. IF SHE WAS CAUGHT, SHE’D STAND A FIGHTING CHANCE OF DEFENDING THE PEOPLE SHE WAS ASSISTING.
NOW, AS FOR “FORCING PEOPLE TO ESCAPE AGAINST THEIR OWN WILL.” THE PEOPLE SHE PULLED A GUN ON WERE ALREADY ON THE RAILROAD WITH HER OF THEIR OWN FREE WILL. THEY WERE PEOPLE WHO WERE TRYING TO ESCAPE, AND WHO KNEW ONCE THEY SET FOOT OFF THE PLANTATION THAT THERE WAS NO GOING BACK. THEY DIDN’T HAVE TO LEAVE THE PLANTATION WITH HER, BUT IF THEY DID, IT WAS “ESCAPE OR DIE TRYING.”
HOWEVER, IT WAS NOT UNCOMMON FOR THEM TO TRY AND TURN BACK ANYWAY. TRYING TO ESCAPE WAS DANGEROUS AND MISERABLE, AND STOCKHOLM SYNDROME IS A THING. MANY OF THEM GOT COLD FEET WITH THE PROSPECT OF THE UNKNOWN STRUGGLE OF A FREE PERSON IN THE NORTH, WHICH FOR ALL THEY KNEW WOULD BE WORSE THAN THE FAMILIAR STRUGGLE OF A SLAVE IN THE SOUTH. MANY OF THE OTHERS FIGURED THEY’D BE CAUGHT AND RETURNED ANYWAY AND THAT THEIR PUNISHMENT WOULD BE LESS SEVERE IF THEY TURNED THEMSELVES IN AND BLEW THE WHISTLE ON TUBMAN AND THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. EVEN IF THIS WASN’T THEIR PLAN, ANYONE WHO’D SEEN HOW THE RAILROAD OPERATES WHO RETURNED TO THE PLANTATION WOULD BE TORTURED INTO GIVING UP THAT INFORMATION.
ANYONE WHO WENT BACK TO THEIR PLANTATION PUT THE REST OF THE RUNAWAYS, PRESENT AND FUTURE, IN DANGER, AND TUBMAN COULDN’T ALLOW THEM TO BLOW HER COVER AND GET ALL THE PEOPLE SHE WAS TRYING TO PROTECT CAPTURED OR KILLED. SO YES, WHEN SOMEONE ATTEMPTED TO TAKE SENSITIVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE METHODS OF THE RESISTANCE BACK INTO ENEMY TERRITORY, SHE’D PULL A GUN ON THEM AND GIVE THEM THE CHOICE BETWEEN GETTING TO “LIVE NORTH FREE, OR DIE HERE.”
BUT I WANT YOU TO STOP THINKING ABOUT HARRIET AS A CIVILIAN FOR A MOMENT. SHE WAS A SOLDIER, A SPY, AND AN INSURGENT REVOLUTIONARY IN A WAR THAT STARTED CENTURIES BEFORE THE SOUTHERN STATES SECEDED. THE RUNAWAYS IN HER CARE CARRIED INFORMATION THAT WOULD ALLOW THE ENEMY TO WIN THE WAR, AND I’M CURIOUS AS TO WHAT YOU WOULD HAVE HER DO.
SHOULD SHE ALLOW PEOPLE WHO KNEW ALL THE RESISTANCE’S TRICKS AND SECRETS TO ALLY THEMSELVES WITH THE ENEMY BECAUSE THEY’D LOST FAITH THE WAR COULD BE WON? SHOULD SHE HAVE SENT THEM HOME WITH A BAG LUNCH FOR THE ROAD AS LONG AS THEY PINKY-PROMISED THAT THEY WOULDN’T TELL?
BECAUSE REALLY YOU ONLY HAVE TWO OPTIONS: WOULD YOU RATHER “HARRIET TUBMAN OCCASIONALLY PULLED A GUN ON PEOPLE ATTEMPTING TO BETRAY HER AND THE PEOPLE UNDER HER PROTECTION TO PEOPLE WHO WOULD ENSLAVE AND MURDER THEM WITHOUT LOSING A WINK’S SLEEP,” OR “THE SLAVE STATES LEARNED THE SECRETS OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD, RECAPTURED THE RUNAWAY SLAVES, AND KILLED HARRIET TUBMAN SO SHE COULDN’T LEAD ANYONE ELSE TO FREEDOM?”
I KNOW THERE’S PROBABLY A MIDDLE GROUND, BUT I’M TELLING YOU AS A HISTORIAN THAT THE LATTER IS THE MOST LIKELY SCENARIO, AND WHEN YOU’VE LIVED THE HORRORS HARRIET TUBMAN HAS LIVED, YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO TAKE THE CHANCE THAT YOU MIGHT GET LUCKY AND THINGS WON’T GO WRONG.
