Hiding | Aloysius & Cassandra
“You’re not supposed to be here.”
Here was the back storage room at one of the more popular local shops that was always busting, but boasted an especially large crowd on the first day of Yuletide. Unlike the other, smaller vendors, Three Roses’s stall in the marketplace held only a sampling of their inventory and their two-story shop filled with sweets, tokens, and even clothing was always a huge draw.
Aloysius had come into the store escorting Isabella Turner and had lost her (somewhat purposefully) in the crowds and stole away into the back room. When she drew his name, he wondered (for a brief moment) what he had done to offend the gods so, until he realized that in light of all of the terrible things he had done in his life, he supposed they were actually being rather generous with him.
Still, it did not make the arrangement any less awkward, considering how their relationship had ended and he was in no mood to resolve things with her amongst the merry crowds enjoying the first day of Yule.
It seemed, however, seeing that Cassandra Astley had had the same idea, he was not the only one who was trying to escape their escort.
“And here I was, feeling sorry for myself for having the worst luck in the world,” He teased, “But you have had the worst luck of all. I truly do not envy you. If only we could switch partners.” Not that he truly would have wished Robert Persimmons on Isabella Turner (she had to spend enough time with him as it was).
Cassandra laughed. “I’m not supposed to be here? I fancy Mrs. Withers would be far more alarmed to walk in and find you hiding in her store room than me,” she teased with mock dignity, a display slightly ruined by a few giggles as she pictured the scene to follow. “You do realize, of course, Mrs. Withers would be half-shocked and half-over-awed to find a Prince of all Aclea squatting amongst her flour. She will ultimately, I’m sure, boast of the event for years to come and, likely, beg of you your seal to use above her door – and, likely, get it too, given how you will be granted not a wink of rest until she’s had her way. Truly, in such an event, I pity you.”
Mrs. Withers was, arguably, the worst gossip in Elsbridge which, in so small a town, so burgeoning with gossips as this, was an achievement. Cassandra had always found the name of her shop — the Three Roses — quite amusing for two reasons. First, Mrs. Withers had a well-known tendency (which she apparently considered quite subtle) for using the maintenance of her roses as an excuse to spy and easedrop on her neighbors and, second, because Cassandra liked to joke that — despite the abundance of rose bushes dotting the landscape of her garden — Mrs. Withers could only boast three rose blossoms due to her sad tendency to accidentally decapitate the flowers in her eagerness to overhear the latest tittle tattle.
“You do realize the gossip would suddenly become that you’re a the notorious thief who plagues everyone who has extra riches to boast of, that I’m mourning a broken heart watching Mr. Persimmons’ passion for all five of the Turners, and that both you and I are even now planning some diabolical and incomprehensible retribution on, likely, High Inquisitor Griffiths or some such personage, which only relates to our troubles in a very confusing and circuitous fashion.”
That was something Cassandra liked very much about Mrs. Withers: oh, she always jumped to conclusions, but never obvious ones. Another person spotting two rich, attractive young people both hiding away somewhere might draw the obvious, tawdry conclusions, but Mrs. Withers was more…creative in her conclusions. In fact, usually they were quite wild. Why, just recently a young woman dancing along a local wood had been declared scandalous by Mrs. Murdock – the chiefest of the gossips in Elsbridge – but Mrs. Withers had not thought their speculations about harlotry could be quite correct: Mrs. Withers had put it around that this behavior was that not of a harlot, as the Queen of the Gossips had declared it to be, but the act of a religious zealot. What deity this supposed ritual had served was unclear, as was its purpose and truly anything else about it, but to Mrs. Withers, no intention had ever been more certain and she could not be drawn off her opinion of the matter for anything.
Cassandra laughed. “At least Isabella isn’t finding any excuse to yodel…a plight I have, admittedly, both cultivated and brought upon myself. I think I shall bring Mr. Persimmons round again to the snake skins. It was far more merciful on my ears.” Cassandra chuckled. “Do not pity me, sir, in my case, I am extremely diverted. My worst trial is twofold: first, I do so wish I were not the center of all his attentions: he is far more managable and diverting when one may share his focus with another and, two, my self-discipline is taxed to its last shred. I am dying to laugh! And I cannot! I feel fit to burst. So we needn’t wish Mr. Persimmons on poor Isabella, again, just yet.”
She paused, a look of sympathy entering her expression. She knew the conclusions of their relationship had proven painful both to the Prince and to th Dragonrider, and Cassandra wished, uselessly, that there were something she could do to aid them both. She could, at least, make him laugh, she concluded, and decided to try.
“Perhaps you could take a page out of your brother’s playbook and escort whichever of the Astleys or Turners who best suits your mood, any given day,” she suggested with a playful smirk. “The Prince of Arith told me off just yesterday for so shamefully attaching myself to your cousin, Charles,” she added, eyes twinkling with amusement. “When I knew full well my heart lay a different way. I confess, I did nothing to dispel such attributions and, instead, I threatened to become a priestess of Vestia and spend all the rest of my days wailing at her altar for the love I was denied. In truth, I’ve no notion who I’m supposed to be in love with, and I’m sure I’ve made things so much worse for everyone, but I could not resist. It was the most ridiculous thing I could think to say at the time, and you know in such moments my mind always flies to the ludicrous.
“In any case, I certainly caught him off guard with that line,” she laughed. “I’ve never seen someone look quite so stricken. He turned beet red and looked as if he would choke, and then he told me — half-yelling, half-commanding — that ‘True piety is the essence of truth!’ which as far as I can tell, means just…nothing at all, so I knelt and began to pray to cover that I was laughing so. I think I may fairly say that he does not now know what to think of me anymore than I of him.”
“Ah, see there’s the difference between us: it seems inevitable there shall be a commemorative plague erected here to document that this small store room once had the honor to host my presence. You, on the other hand, are more likely to be chased out of here will likely be chased away with a broom.” He was teasing her. While he was certain she was correct in that he was likely to receive a warm reception from Mrs. Withers, he doubted Cassandra would be subjected to a cold one (her mother was, after all, Lady Astley).
“It is rather nice to have so many people prejudice in one’s favor,” He added, selecting a fresh apple from a basket. “Notorious thief!” He cried in mock offense as she explained the rumors that were sure to come if they were discovered. “Me!?” They both glanced at the same time to the apple he had already taken a bite out of. “Whatever would give them that impression.” He tried to keep a straight face, but failed.
“Hmm, on an entirely unrelated note -- “ He returned to the basket and replaced the apple with a a small coin purse that easily held enough for fifty apples. (Whether this was a generous act on Aloysius’s part or a gross misestimation of what an apple cost, remains to be seen).
“I’m afraid the rumors concerning yourself are not so easily disproven. I’ve heard the man declare that both you and your mother are desperately in love with him and he’s told tale of how his yodeling swept you off your feet and the mere thought of it, made your mother so feverish that she had to excuse herself. You females are such sensitive creatures.”
He took another large bite from his apple, “As for the diabolical scheme we may be accused of concocting together -- that, I’m afraid, follows around anyone who entertains me for more than a few minutes. Such is my reputation.” He winked.
Aloysius laughed aloud when she brought up his brother, “Ah yes: you are another poor girl Ambrose tends to mix up. In your case, he believes you, your sisters, and at least half of (if not all?) of the Turner girls are one singular person and one of you cannot do a thing without it being attributed to you all. He believes you are all engaged to Charles, while having nearly managed to marry myself, but in truth your feelings are for none other than Ambrose himself (it seems he took Cecily’s genuine attempts to cultivate some sort of friendship as her being head-over-heels in love with him). I’ve tried to explain to him many times that he has confused Isabella with her sisters and friends, but he is adamant that this woman is rather manipulative in all that she does and that is what she wants me to believe -- and what I wish to believe myself, so nothing I do is of any good.” He laughed again, vividly envisioning the scene she painted before him, “You, on the other hand, I believe you’ve just managed to make things worse for everybody -- as you’ve just confirmed your undying love for my dear brother.”

tfwambrose:
dudeeeeee that is PRECISELY what i had hoped for with them ngl alsjdfkljdsfasdf and omg yesssss he absolutely has nOOOOO idea that he’s being teased or pranked eveR he’s like ‘obv aloysius is doing his utmost to learn from the master’ meanwhile he’s literally showing him how to put socks on (which frankly is kinda out there even as an example of smth absurd bc tbh ambrose DEF has his servants put his socks on him but anyway lakjsdklfjsdf) also!!!! he defffff takes credit!!!!!!! but the thing he’s taking credit for is teaching him how to position his fingers in a way that will make his hand look more graceful and meanwhile the thing that aloysius just did that’s ~actually impressing ppl is rescue a drowning child from a river aldskjflksdjfkjsdf and ambrose is like ‘yeah he taught me everything i know’ /sarcasm and ambrose just beams like ‘why yes i did’ alksjflkjsdfkjsdf and he believes it too even tho he just watched aloysius do the opposite of whatever idiotic thing ambrose told him to do smdh lakjsdfljsdfj those five minutes that aloysius actually did lookup to him…what bliss for ambrose…and what horror for aloysius! ;D
and!!!1 he is defffff the easiest guy in the world to prank like??? tell him smth???? he’ll be spreading it around!!!!!!! put an obv fake snake in his path? he’ll run howling away!!!!!!! tell him smth ridiculous is fashionable???? he’ll be wearing it continuously!!!!! there is no end to it!!!! and best yet? its a two-for-one prank bc all these antics are most deF embarrassing septimus ramsay to noooooo end and annoying arthur to high heaven alkjsdflkjdsljkfdjf so its really a win/win on every level ;DDDDD
also!!!!!! as you know, ive realized/ambrose decided that he thinks that the astleys and the turner doppelgangers are all the same person who dated aloysius, is engaged to their not!cousin, Charles Acton, and who may or may not be a dragonrider AND he is confident that this one (1) single person is also madly in love w himself but knows she can never have him and thus must settle for these lesser partners alkdjsfkljsdf anyway, he def warned him back in the day that she would break his heart!!! and now that he’s drawn lady isabella or whoever’s name again, despite her being engaged to charles, wishes to warn both aloysius and charles again of the intrigue and pain they’re inviting in to their lives!!!!!!! oh, he also probs thinks that this person is the same one who was engaged to mr cecil and already broke his heart too!!! ;DDDD alkdjfkljsdf again…this man believes he has magic bc ppl tell him he does even tho he v obv does noT sooooo…an excellent source of information ;DDDD
but he ~did def report, after spending the evening w cecily who was just trying to be nice, to aloysius that his gf was just using aloysius to try to get to ambrose aljsdalfjdskjf which he 100% believes is what happened alkjsdafljdsf and he was only ~partially boasting and ~mostly trying to warn aloysius before he got his heart broken alsdjflkjsdf i do feel like he tried to cheer him up after things did eventually go south there but tbh that probs wasn’t nearly as helpful as he meant to be bc i doubt shopping for new gloves was nearly as thrilling for aloysius as it was for ambrose alsdkjfalksjdfj
but honestly???? all of the above is out of love like…that’s the one good thing i can say is that he does genuinely love his bro <3 he ~does however sometimes get competitive and jealous bc he sees the paper praising aloysius and implying that he, himself, only spends a paltry five minutes on his cravat!!!!!!!!! ;DDDD and it brings out the worst in himself and then he tries to like tell stories to the press that he ~believes make him look good and alo look bad…of course, it ~actually does the opposite but alsjdflksdfjdf his intentions in such cases actually ~were bad aljdlsfkjdkf still, he’d never do anything that he thought would truly harm aloysius bc he does love him lajfkljsdljf and honestly he probs helps him more by trying to make him look bad and hurts him more when he tries to help him, so alksdjflkjdsfkjdsf #wellplayedsir
laskjflafjlfj yeah honestly Aloysius has always enjoyed messing with Ambrose b/c there’s literally no downside ;DDD (also throwback to when he first dressed up as Ambrose during the feast of Noros && he probably told Ambrose it was b/c he admired him so much askljflsjf)
omg what a mess w/ Ambrose combining all of the astleys and turners together into 1 person basically lmao!! I do think there’s probably been a few times when Aloysius has tried to correct him and been like “you were probably just talking to her twin sister?” but I feel like that clearly has not worked and I also think there’s been times when Aloysius has encouraged him just to mess w/ Isabella when they were together and he’s like “sorry not sorry but my brother thinks you are in love with him and i may not have told him you aren’t”
I do think he’s a little more firm with Ambrose about it, b/c he feels like he’s the one at fault with his relationship with Isabella failing and he doesn’t want her or her sisters to be bothered with Ambrose’s meddling (however much he might be enjoying Ambrose embarrassing himself in front of Charles Acton sldjflasfj). But i feel like him trying to convince Ambrose that he’s thinking of two different girls will only make Ambrose feel all the more like they have somehow managed to trick his brother alskfdjlafj
But yeah, I do think that the feelings are mutual there -- like Aloysius does care about his brother and he loves him, too, and I do think that there are people who can mess w/ Ambrose and people who can’t and he will defend him (even if Ambrose makes that really hard sometimes!) when it comes to people Aloysius doesn’t like. (But all of Aloysius’s friends, however, are not only allowed but encouraged to mess with Ambrose b/c he knows nothing will be too malicious/he won’t be taken advantage of, y’know??)

omg but them bickering while dating turner sistas <3 what a mess i love it sm that is precisely the kinda chaos that feels just right and that isabella would absolutely have a hand in cultivate w/o ever, ever meaning to #flawlessmydear
no but honestly idk if aloysius would ~literally thank owen for his honesty but i can absolutely promise it would throw him for a loop alskjdfkljsfk he would noT know what to do w that alkjsdfkjsdjfk WE ARE FRIENDS BC FRIENDS DON’T LIE LKSDAJFLKJSDKFJKJF owen later complaining to sia about it like ‘my day was TERRIBLE i think i accidentally adopted a prince today – no, i did ~not invite it, i was just trying to insult him!’ ;DDD weirdly, though, like???? if it stayed that way long enough??? i feel like young!owen would v grudgingly and sighing a loT and rolling his eyes continuously be more and more ok w him and gradually more and more like [ this ] laksjdflkjdskjf (but only to a point bc obv he’s got some rather significant problems w aloysius’ family and is also, yknow, a rebel, a wanted man, an outlaw just for breathing etc so!!!!!) it’s complicated!!!! lkajsdfkljdsljf either way tho that journey woulda been sloooooow af and looooong and it’d be one of those where gradually the insults become terms of endearment shhhhh bc young!owen is as a big a mess as older!owen just in different ways alskdjfkljsdlfkj
also aloysius and owen trying to describe their relaitonship to someone else
alo: we’re friends bc friends don’t lie
owen: we’re not friends
alo: gods, he cracks me up w that line everytime
owen: *sighs*
jk jk but honestly what a meSS and i love it already alkdsfjkljdsf
lkajsdfkljasdkljfkjsdaf ngl me tooooo!! that au!!!!! we coulda had it allllll (rolling in the deeeeeeep etc) alksdjfkljsdf the rebellion aka: the turner fam singlehandedly change this nation w the help of a few close family friends if its the last thing they do ;DDD
why do I love this so much aslfkjalsdfjalsdfj
I feel like Aloysius honestly probably has genuinely told him ~thanks for being honest with me~ at some point because it doesn’t really happen that much and honestly from people in Owen’s position is great!!
Anyway, idk to what degree their relationship would have evolved to by the time Owen left, but Aloysius always had respect for him and would have been v saddened by his ~death~ and actually v excited to see that he’s actually alive and well!! (And I’m crying b/c I feel like Owen is another person who could have actually recruited Aloysius into the resistance too if he wasn’t so extreme about things)
ooc | Aloysius & Eleanor
tfweleanor:
YES I LOVE THIS. She would 100% sit down at the table and be like “aren’t you a prince? why are you here?” because she had literally no filter and no self preservation issues and isn’t that why we all love eleanor? hahah And weren’t he and Isabella a bit of a thing there for awhile? Because you KNOW Eleanor went back home one day and was like “look at all the gold i won off the prince!” and everyone was like “excuse me?” so isabella went along and was like…well yes indeed that is a prince you won a bunch of money off of! not saying that’s how those two met butttttt
anywho, eleanor basically is just living to do what she wants when she wants and have fun so if he’s down for that, she would be more than happy to have him around! and for sure he’s in on the hustle (and def pockets half the money for herself/the resistance which makes it extra sweet for her!)
HAHAH honestly I think Aloysius would also love that she has no filter <333 There’s definitely something v refreshing about that especially since there’s a lot of people who just tell him what he wants to hear since he’s a prince.
But yes! They were! It didn’t end very well tbh and he just kinda ~left~ without saying anything b/c he caught feelings and wasn’t sure how to process them and idk if that has had any bearing on how eleanor feels about them but he would still try to be her friend b/c he loves a good gambling (hustling) partner
(Also love the idea that that’s how he met Isabella was through her sister <333)

OOC | Ambrose & Aloysius
your older brother here!!! obv this is someone aloysius should def look up to ;DDDD just like the rest of the country <3 such a grand role model, such a replendant leader, etc, etc alskfjkjsdfjsdf anyway, he’s defffff the sort of insufferable prig to, like, see aloysius doing ~something, and be like ‘its big brother time!’ causing him to take aloysius aside and try to give him instruction…which, if aloysius actually followed his instructions, would probs lead straight to disaster but here we are aldksjfkjlsdflkjf
AHHHH Kate i am sCREAMING!! This relationship asfgdhdjdksksl I feel like there may have been a very brief time when Aloysius actually did look up to his bro but that went out that door pretty immediately after he started to develop ~sense~
I do think he loves his brother, but he doesn’t always like him. Plus, he’s honestly the best person in the world to play a prank on??? I think he just likes to mess with him in general and idk about you, I feel like Ambrose just doesn’t realize when Aloysius makes fun of him and he basically does that 24/7 and sarcastically gives him compliments all the time and Ambrose probably finds them to be genuine
also Aloysius being like “yes! give me your instruction!!” and then doing it his own way and things being fine and Ambrose taking credit for Aloysius’s success like it was all his idea the whole time aljsdlfjasdfj
Callum Turner as Anatole Kuragin in War & Peace (x6)
Feast of Noros
Aloysius’s first official feast of Noros went about how you might imagine aljdfljfslkd
His mother wouldn’t let him go until he was thirteen years old, which was older than both of his other brothers had been
She deemed him too irresponsible to go and be trusted to stay out with the others and because she didn’t trust him to return home before that, he wasn’t allowed to go at all
Of course, this didn’t stop him from trying to sneak out
He tried every year since his seventh birthday to do so, but kept getting stopped
He prided himself on the fact that he made it further each year, even though the security was heightened each time
(Isabella definitely pointed out to him on multiple occasions that she managed to sneak out to attend when she was six, which certainly wounded Aloysius’s pride, even if they acknowledged that it would be harder to do if one were a prince)
For his costume, he tricked his older brother Amrbose into lending him some of his clothes
He then went as Amrbose, saying that if he does anything to offend the spirits, it will be with his brother who they will quarrel
He also had his first kiss that night
He made friends with some girls who were a few years older than he, but were clearly uneasy to be out so late and he promised to protect them
He also hinted more than once that he was a prince (which is true!) but may have suggested that he was arthur instead (or at the very least ambrose)
He managed to kiss each of the girls which started his official tradition to kiss a strange girl every year on the feast of noros (something he has observed faithfully every year, except for when he was courting Felicity & Isabella)
