But, if I had been given the opportunity at the time, I imagine I could quickly have dispelled the rift rumors simply by telling something I knew. In his hotel suite in Auckland, New Zealand, Philip had noticed a photograph of the Halliday portrait of the Queen and he liked it so much that he took it down from the wall, then and there, to put in his suitcase and take with him to the Antarctic. This was scarcely the gesture of someone running away from marriage.

For almost a year, from when Prince Peter of Greece lost his right to the throne after marrying a divorcee until Constantine II was born in 1940, Prince Philip was third in line to the Greek throne, behind the future King  Paul and his own father. If Constantine II had not been born and Greece was still a monarchy, he would have been King of Greece.

However Prince Philip was never fond of Greece, though he did speak the language. As he once said, a grandfather assassinated and a father condemned to death did not endear the land to him.

He also disliked Russia, though his paternal grandmother was born Grand Duchess Olga Constantinova. Empress Alexandra and Grand Duchess Ella were both sisters of his other grandmother, and he resented their murders very much.

This all had another effect on him. Once, when on an engagement with the Queen when the crowd surged wildly towards them. Prince Phillip immediately  positioned his body between the Queen and everyone else. He had a family history of monarchs being assassinated and his instincts took over. And those instincts were to shield his wife with his own body.

The Legend

He was a man of talent and passion,

The job wasn’t his dream but he did it with dedication,

Supported the Queen as her husband and consort,

Couldn’t care less to the salty men inside the court.

Started his career during the World War 2,

Ended up a royal, he was the most hardworking;

Though his contribution to the world had immeasurable value,

Him acknowledging his due was almost daunting.

Whatever he did was controversial,

Many would say that he was unusual;

His efforts made life more tolerable,

A great man indeed, he remained humble.

It was an honor for me to know you,

Been my happy pill for a year and a half,

Admiration is what I feel, I swear it’s true,

Your iconic gaffes will forever make me laugh.

I may not be able to meet you here,

Time will come, we’ll be drinking your favorite beer;

To the legend that I’ll miss dearly,

You did well, may you rest easy.

He makes her laugh because some of the things he says and does and the way he looks at life is obviously slightly different than her, so together they’re a great couple.

Elizabeth raced out, flush-faced in nightdress and negligee, laughing as she ran. Philip bounded, whooping, in pursuit, a lean, athletic figure in a white bathrobe. I continued laying the table as they dodged round it, this way and that. Then, spotting the open door into the corridor, Elizabeth raced through it. Philip charged after her, and the pair of them rushed away along the corridor. They did not come back. There was another entrance to their bedroom farther along the corridor, and presumably the chase continued through that.”
