On 22 November 1947, Princess Elizabeth perfectly described her husband in a letter to the Queen Mother.

“We behave as though we had belonged to each other for years! Philip is an angel – he is so kind and thoughtful, and living with him and having him around all the time is just perfect.”

Sir Henry Channon’s ready pen noted a dance given at Coppins that summer for the Edinburghs ‘who were enchanting... she was in black lace, with a large comb and mantilla, as an Infanta, and danced every dance until nearly five a.m. Philip, extremely handsome and pleasing, was the success of the ball, wildly so with his policeman's hat and handcuffs. He leapt about and jumped into the air as he greeted everybody... His charm is colossal, like all Mountbattens, and he and Princess Elizabeth seemed supremely happy and often danced together...' Towards three a.m. they were still dancing and then went out of doors into the blue dawn while the tireless band played on. It is small wonder that the diarist added, 'I am beginning to doubt the supposed pregnancy.'

“For those who couldn’t make it to Romsey, enterprising journalists strove to find every morsel of information from staff and locals. One report covers the arrival of the couple inside the mansion. Written in a style that makes Barbara Cartland read like Tolstoy, we are told Elizabeth’s ‘proud slim shoulders drooped a little as Philip’s arm went round her at the bend of the stairway. She leaned against him looking up with a grateful shy smile.’ Arriving at their bedroom overlooking the river Test, the Princess apparently exclaimed: ‘Oh how lovely it is in here.’ It’s not surprising it was ‘lovely’ since the same reporter tells us that housekeeper Mrs Monks had at least twenty times ‘smoothed the pale pink crepe-de-chine sheets and two pillow cases appliquéd with a white satin leaf motif’.”

THE 1947 ROYAL WEDDING: Pose without the Posies

Princess Elizabeth’s wedding bouquet consisted of white orchids and a sprig of myrtle, which were arranged by the florist Martin Longman.

While Princess Elizabeth was busy preparing, a footman noticed that the bouquet was missing. He remembered bringing it to one of the princess’s rooms but couldn’t recall what happened to it after. Panic ensued, and suddenly he remembered that he had placed it in a cool cupboard to prevent it from wilting.

The bouquet disappeared again for some reason after the newlyweds returned to Buckingham Palace, but this time it was never found. Thus, she was photographed empty-handed during the photocall, while all of her bridesmaids were holding their own.

Soon after the wedding, a replica of the bouquet was made by the same florist. And, halfway through their honeymoon, the newlyweds came back to the palace and recreated some photos, in which Princess Elizabeth was holding her new bouquet. 💐
