Five More Essential Nineties Hip Hop Albums

As a companion piece to my new YouTube video, I have five additional Nineties Hip Hop albums I believe are essential. Without further ado, here they are.

1. GZA: Liquid Swords (1995)

Acting as the solo debut for Wu-Tang Clan member the GZA, this record has been celebrated for its dark feel and vibrant lyricism. Boasting production from Wu genius the RZA and features from Method Man, Killah Priest, and Ghostface Killah among many others, it’s ultimately GZA that steals the show with his command of pen.

2.  Onyx: Bacdafucup (1993)

No Hip Hop group has come close to matching the intensity Onyx delivered in the Nineties. With their debut album delivering the ferocity it hints at, the group earned its respect as one of the most hardcore hip hop groups ever created. Songs like “Slam” have earned classic status among hip hop heads, and taking one listen can easily reveal why.

3. Kool Keith: Dr. Octagonecologyst (1995)

Easily one of the most bizarre and eclectic hip hop albums to ever drop, former ultramagnetic mcs member Kool Keith created a literary masterpiece with Dr. Octagon. Featuring strange and curious lyrics mixed with innovative production and scratching, this album has become celebrated as an underground classic of the genre.

4. Raekwon: Only Built 4 Cuban Linx (1995)

If Mafioso rap ever was a thing (though most say it was) then this album would be its crown jewel. Wu-Tang member Raekwon came through on his solo debut with some boastful narratives about wealth, power, and the streets. The stunting was strong with this one.

5. Hieroglyphics: 3rd Eye Vision (1998)

If there was any collective that lists seem to overlook in Hip Hop, Hieroglyphics would probably take that role. Hailing from Oakland California, this group provided rap with songs detailing well...a wide variety of subjects. Whether it was a posse cut about robbing a bank, each of the members flexing their rhyme skills, or a track about spiritual enlightenment, Hiero gave the West Coast a new voice for rappers in the underground.

Top five metal bands of the 2010′s (so far)

While not at the forefront of the mainstream, metal has maintained a thriving underground in this 2010 decade. In no particular order, here are five metal bands that have contributed greatly to the sound of this decade’s metal.

1. Liturgy

Years active: 2008-present

Style of metal: A smorgasbord of shoegazing, glitch, and post-rock all wrapped around the style of “Transcendental Black Metal”.

Why they are important: Since the release of 2011′s Aesthetica, Liturgy have been a driving force in the diversification of American Black Metal. Though more attention has been drawn to frontman Hunter-Hunt Hendrix’s statements regarding the band’s style, Liturgy’s musicianship has allowed them to be one of the best quartets in metal’s underground.

2. Deafheaven

Years active: 2010-present

Style of metal: Some of the most uplifting black metal played out against ethereal backdrops and emo influence. 

Why they are important: In 2013, Deafheaven dropped their second studio album Sunbather. The project was acclaimed almost unanimously by critics and became the best reviewed metal album of that year. Since then, the San Francisco quintet have been cited as one of the decade’s most important metal acts. Only time will tell if they continue to push forward.

3. Young and in The Way

Years active: 2009-present

Style of metal: A ferocious blend of hardcore, crust punk, and black metal that pummels the listener nonstop.

Why they are important: This Charlotte North Carolina group has been pretty prolific when it comes to metal’s underground. While they have only released two albums so far, YAITW have served as yet another indication of how black metal is evolving. The group’s menacing and cold sound has earned them acclaim from critics and listeners alike. Here’s hoping they maintain that acclaim.

4. Leviathan

Years active: 1998-present

Style of metal: Some good old fashioned black metal submerged with layers of dark ambient and nightmarish spoken word.

Why he is important: Jef Whitehead has been performing under his “Leviathan” moniker for more than fifteen years. In that time he has released eight studio albums and multiple splits. Though still very underground in the metal community, Jef’s albums have continued to challenge the confines of how dark metal can be. His most recent studio album (Scar Sighted) has been one of the most acclaimed metal records this year.

5. Nails

Years active: 2010-present

Style of metal: Some of the most violent and chaotic meshes of powerviolence, crust punk, grindcore, metalcore, and many other genres ever recorded.

Why they are important: Without question, Nails has been one of the most aggressive and hardest hitting metal bands this decade has seen. The group’s extensive touring and intense live shows have earned them a core following of devoted fans. Though yet untitled, Nails is set to release their third album sometime this year.

Ten anticipated releases/artists for the remainder of 2015.

Being already halfway done with the year, there are still a multitude of artists that I’m looking forward to hearing from. The following list contains what I feel are my most anticipated.

1. The Weeknd: Chapter III

Coming off of an incredibly hot stretch of singles (see the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack) and features, The Weeknd has easily established himself as the most popular PBR&B act. With his next album around the corner, it will be very interesting to see the direction Abel takes with his music.

2. Frank Ocean: TBA

The now former Odd Future member has been very quiet since the release of his 2012 masterpiece Channel Orange. Without a new song or feature in sight, Frank recently confirmed that his next album would drop sometime soon. Currently untitled, this album will be anticipated by many when it finally drops.

3. Pusha T: King Push

While announcing this album’s title way back in 2013 (after releasing his solo debut My Name Is My Name), Pusha finally dropped the first single “Lunch Money” late last year. Having dropped some impressive features with many renowned artists (including a phenomenal banger with ISHI called “Push it”), Pusha’s next album should make serious waves.

4. Kanye West: SWISH

Yeezy has been very public with the release of his upcoming project SWISH (formerly titled So Help Me God). Coming off of a polarizing effort with 2013′s Yeezus, fans are eagerly awaiting to see what Kanye will accomplish.

5. Jay Rock: TBA

Rock has been the top of many hip hop heads’ discussions. After a long delayed process, Jay Rock has finally dropped three singles to build hype for his long-awaited sophomore studio album. The TDE rapper has built an incredible following for himself with dropping some impressive features (see “Money Trees” by Kendrick Lamar). We can only hope that Rock will make the wait worth it with this project.

6. Deftones: TBA

My fandom for these guys has already been well-established. Following up their well-acclaimed 2012 album Koi No Yakan, frontman Chino Moreno has stated that the album will contain “a mixture of emotions”. It will of course be interesting to see what those emotions will encompass, and how the band’s music will accompany it.

7. Tool: TBA

So it’s official. Tool have been back in the studio recording their first album in almost ten years. Having endured some agonizing legal trouble last year, the band are confirmed to be writing and demoing for the next project. While the chance of a new album this year is unlikely, perhaps we will be lucky enough to receive a single.

8. Alice in Chains: TBA

2013′s The Devil Put The Dinosaurs Here was a mild disappointment musically for Alice. However, the band was able to tour diligently and are said to be back in the studio. Though no real announcements regarding the album have been made, hopefully the band will bless us with a new single to build hype for the next album.

9. Green Day: TBA

Coming fresh off of an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Green Day are now working on a follow up to the trilogy of albums (Uno, Dos, and Tre) that they put out in 2012. Billie Joe Armstrong (lead singer and guitarist) stated that he himself is excited for what is to come. Hopefully they put out a single so that we can be as well.

10. Blink-182: TBA

To say that Blink have had a rough year is an understatement. The band have since parted ways with founder and guitarist Tom Delonge (pictured far left) in favor of Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba. While the band originally did this so that they could play shows that were already booked, the group have since been very positive towards recording with Skiba. While a new album this year is very unlikely, a potential single or two could be on the way.

My Top 10 Hip Hop Projects of the Midyear

Can you believe it’s almost the end of June? With already half of the year done, it’s only appropriate to start considering the contenders for best projects of the year. This here is a list of the top 10 hip hop projects that caught my ear for 2015 so far.

10. Jarren Benton: Slow Motion Vol. 1 (EP)

Jarren delivered another really solid project to kick off the year. Over a span of just eight tracks, the Atlanta Emcee steals the show with southern bangers, some lyrical tonguetwisters, and even some touching emotional introspection (see the track “Silence”). With a slew of solid features to back up the artist up, it’s no question that Benton has the respect of his peers. Here’s hoping Benton can continue to deliver quality work and prove that Atlanta has lyrical talent.

9. Earl Sweatshirt: I don’t like shit. I don’t go outside.

Saying that Earl Sweatshirt dropped a dark project can seem like a common phrase in hip hop. However, this second full length album is easily Earl’s most moody and submerged work yet. With ten tracks running at a total of about thirty minutes, Earl let’s us know immediately that he’s not one for the petty practices of society. Handling production on all but one of the album’s tracks, Earl proves that he can create a sonic template for loneliness and isolation. Making for an incredible ride that is short and memorable.

8. Death Grips: The Powers That B

Yes it’s official. Death Grips are back! And they’re in full swing! This double album has been in the making for over a year since the band pulled that infamous napkin prank (claiming that they broke up when they actually didn’t). As a two disc, twenty track project, this album is an attention grabbing palette of genre-bending noise hop. Famed singer Bjork has vocal samples that ring all throughout disc 1 (”Niggas on the moon”), and garage-punk guitars make up the backbone of the majority of disc 2 (”Jenny Death”). The band sounds as tight as ever together, and we can only hope that they will continue to deliver their forward-thinking music in the future.

7. Fashawn: The Ecology

Famed west coast emcee Fashawn has been on hip hop’s radar for a minute. Coming to fame with his 2009 classic Boy Meets World, the rapper soon received instant recognition and was signed to Mass Appeal Records (headed up by Nas) in 2014. An anticipated release coming into this year, Fashawn delivered very nicely with this project. Each of the album’s thirteen (fourteen including the bonus track) songs contain some incredibly aware lyrics over some excellent production. Boasting some nice features from Nas, Dom Kennedy, and Aloe Blacc among others, this is a welcome return from an artist that deserves every bit of his hype.

6. Billy Woods: Today I Wrote Nothing

“Today I wrote Nothing/Stared at the page blunted” are the first words issued out of Billy’s mouth when this project kicks off. One half of acclaimed underground duo Armand Hammer, Billy Woods gives an album full of twenty four vignettes and sketches. Featuring multiple appearances from fellow partner in crime Elucid, Billy manages to captivate through his slow and easygoing conversational flow. Even though each track only averages about a minute or two, our attention is still held throughout the duration of this entire project.

5. Lupe Fiasco: Tetsuo & Youth

Anybody saying that Lupe Fiasco’s career ended with Lasers needs to seriously check this album out. With what is easily hip hop’s comeback project of the year, Lupe came ready with an incredible array of seventeen tracks. Focused around the themes of the seasons, Lupe displays some incredible lyricism (see the monster opener “Mural”) and songwriting ability. Held together by some great production and features, Lupe strings Tetsuo & Youth together with ease. Proving that he hasn’t lost his touch after a brief detour.

4. Joey Bada$$: B4.DA.$$

Young Brooklyn rapper/enlightened youth Joey Bada$$ had been hyping this project up for well over a year. Anticipated by many coming into 2015, Joey absolutely gave his all for what is an incredible debut album. Boasting production from the likes of Dj Premier and Statik Selektah, Joey roars through the fifteen tracks with his golden age swagger and bars. Providing a variety of topics dealing with issues such as police brutality (see “No. 99″), the pursuit of money (see “Paper Trail$”), and one’s own mortality (see “On and On”), Joey proves that he is versatile and more than able to hold his own.

3. Open Mike Eagle: A Special Episode of (EP)

Open Mike Eagle is quite simply rap’s most lovable nerd. Coming off of an incredible 2014 release Dark Comedy, this six track Ep is an excellent follow up. Setting the tone with the opener “Dark Comedy Late Show”, Mike displays some impressive bars regarding topics such as race relations, music streaming, and news coverage. Fellow rappers Milo and MC Paul Barman make some nice appearances on the song “Trickeration”, helping to compliment the project’s flow flawlessly. For any rap listener who may be obliged to succumb to anxiety and video games, give this Ep a listen.

2. A$AP Rocky: At.Long.Last.A$AP

Artistic doesn’t even come close to describing the vein this album runs in. This second full length album from Lord Pretty Flacko is easily his most well executed yet. Over the span of eighteen tracks, Rocky astounds us with his ever-charming, psychedelic swag and bravado. From the hard grit of tracks like “Canal St” and “M’$” to the drug induced worlds of “Excuse Me” and “L$D”, A$AP sounds fantastic over every single one of these tracks. His wordplay and concepts have definitely taken a leap forward (see the album opener “Holy Ghost” which takes shots at organized religion), and Rocky honors his former partner in crime A$AP Yams (who died earlier this year) in prime fashion. Rocky profoundly states that “I guess the new me is gonna take some getting used to”. Consider taking his advice.

1. Kendrick Lamar: To Pimp A Butterfly

Without a shadow of doubt, I can probably say that this will be my album of the year. Kendrick dropped an absolute gem of an album to set the tone in 2015. Featuring some out of this world production from the likes of Thudercat, Flying Lotus, Sounwave, Pharrel, and many others, TPAB is an experience like no other. Connecting a series of sixteen songs through the message in a single poem, Lamar perhaps has played his writers card to his greatest benefit. The lyricism displayed is phenomenal, and Lamar delivers his words with an infinite amount of inflections and moods. A reflection of the anger and uncertainty that’s surfaced within the past year, Lamar’s album contains a vital message of self-love that needs to be heard.

The Top 5 Metal Bands of the Noughties

With it being the midpoint of the 2010′s, I thought it appropriate to list the five metal bands who, in my opinion, impacted the 2000′s the most. Let’s get into it! (this list is in no particular order)

1. System of A Down

Years active: 1994-2006, 2010-present

Style of metal: Avant garde, operatic singing meets low end and occasionally melodic nu metal.

Why they are important: Perhaps no metal band within the past twenty years has reached the level of experimentation SOAD has. Featuring songs containing lyrics ranging from political to obscene, System’s message always shines with an undeniable brilliance. Coupled with the great musicianship from all four of its members, SOAD allowed metal to be fun and free again in the 2000s.

2. Slipknot

Years active: 1995-present

Style of metal: The very extremes of nu metal are hammered with a death metal coating and delivery. Turntable scratches and additional percussion help add punctuation.

Why they are important: If you’re looking for a brutal, mainstream metal act, Slipknot is your group. Formed in Des Moines Iowa in the Mid-nineties, Slipknot skyrocketed to the charts with the release of their debut record Slipknot. Bringing an extreme metal charge to a popularized genre, Slipknot furthered their reign with their sophomore effort Iowa. Containing breakneck drumming, brutal riffage, and misanthropic lyrics, the nine piece outfit soon became America’s poster boys for modern metal. Still around today, the group has helped influence a variety of bands who have formed within the past ten years.

3. Mastodon

Years active: 2000-present

Style of metal: Imagine your favorite seventies prog act (we’ll use Rush as an example), and picture them doused in sludge metal slime.

Why they are important: To say that Mastodon maintained progressive metal’s relevancy is an understatement. Rather they took the oldschool veins of the genre and gave them a much needed charge (see Converge for other examples). Exploring themes such as the elements and moby dick, Mastodon was one of the first new (not nu) metal bands of the 2000s to get huge. Their continued presence with last year’s Once More ‘Round The Sun only confirms that the band is still going strong.

4. Lamb Of God

Years active: 1994-present

Style of metal: Some god old fashioned bay area thrash revival, mixed in with some death metal and groove metal pummelage.

Why they are important: First coming onto the scene as “Burn the Priest”, Lamb Of God’s first album under their new name (New American Gospel) set the tone for what metal would be like in the 2000′s. The group’s musical dynamic is excellent, and their songwriting chops allow for some brutal yet catchy hits. Put on hold for a bit due to singer Randy Blythe’s alleged manslaughter accusation, the group is set to release a new record very soon.

5. As I lay Dying

Years active: 2000-2014 (on hiatus)

Style of metal: American metalcore mixed with some Swedish death metal melodies and death metal screams.

Why they are important: Often overlooked when discussing metal in the 2000′s, AILD helped distinguish themselves away from the typical metalcore act in the mid 2000′s. At a time where a new crop of groups were propping up, As I lay dying separated themselves with their melodic songwriting. Solos and catchy melodies helped to balance out the group’s harsh screams and chugging riffs, making for a well rounded sound. The band has been put on hiatus due to vocalist Tim Lambesis’s charges (i.e. paying someone to kill his wife). The remainder of the group has since formed the band Wovenwar with new singer Shane Blay.

Top 5 White Rappers

Yes you’re reading the title correctly. For this post, I’m going to list who in my opinion are the top 5 white rap acts (in order). My primary motivation for this list is to bring awareness to some artists I feel aren’t recognized to the amount they should be. Let’s get into it.

5. The Beastie Boys

Years active: 1981-2012

Style of hip hop: Three dudes rapping about skateboarding, partying, brass monkeys, and Paul Revere. All before it was cool.

Why they are the best: You can’t honestly cover the golden age of hip hop without mentioning the Beastie Boys. Yet most of the time, that sadly is the case. Credited with being the first big white rap act, the Beasties played a big factor in getting white America to accept rap as an art form. Experimentation with live instruments and famed DJ Mix Master Mike helped push the groups sound in the nineties. Helping to solidify their presence as a reputable music group. Member MCA’s death caused the group to disband in 2012.

4. R. A. The Rugged Man

Years active: 1992-present

Style of hip hop: A wiseguy, no holds barred New Yorkian spitting lyrics encapsulating all sorts of filth. Delivered with the technical ability of a master.

Why he is the best: R.A.’s credibility runs all the way back to the nineties hip hop scene in New York. Forging relationships with the likes of Biggie Smalls and members of Wu Tang Clan, R. A. established himself as a formidable presence in hip hop’s underground. Problems regarding image and controversy resulted in R.A. not being signed to a major label. He has since remained underground and put out only two studio albums.

3. El-P

Years active: 1993-present

Style of hip hop: Science fiction imagery crammed in with cultural satire and delivered with a confident, New York accent.

Why he is the best: El producto has been a central part of underground hip hop for a long time. Expertly skilled in both rap and production, El-P has worked with many acts including Cannibal Ox and Killer Mike (both Mike’s solo stuff and in the group Run the Jewels). As a lyricist, El-P is underrated at best. His bars often contain so much information that additional listens are required just to decipher his messages. Unique and proficient, El-P is a rapper one must be aware of if they plan on exploring hip hop.

2. Eminem

Years active: 1992-present

Style of hip hop: Vile bars regarding violence, poverty, rape, his daughter, mother, father, and ex Kim Mathers all delivered with an undeniable passion.

Why he is the best: Em’s reputation as hip hop’s king has been mentioned countless amounts of times in mainstream culture. The best selling artist of the 2000s, Eminem hit it big with the release of the “Marshall Mathers LP”. An album glorifying his trademark alter ego “Slim Shady”, Eminem was immediately ridding a wave that would overtake the pop charts for years to come. Having released his eighth album “The Marshall Mathers Lp 2″ in 2013, Eminem became the first rap act to headline England’s massive Wembley Stadium. Proving once and for all that he is the biggest pop act this generation has ever seen.

1. Eyedea

Years active: 1993-2010

Style of hip hop: Insightful lyrics detailing humanity’s evils, abstract surrealism, and some of the best diss shots ever recorded.

Why he is THE best: Eyedea is an artist that should be up there with Tupac and Biggie in terms of legacy and status. Coming to fame as a battle rapper in the early 2000s, Eyedea gained a reputation of being one of the best to ever freestyle completely off the top. While his battles may have shown his competitive skill, his work with DJ Abilities (in the duo Eyedea and Abilities) showcased the depth of Eyedea’s thought. Tracks such as “Man vs. Ape” demonstrated Eyedea’s ability to make thoughtful observations about humanity that no rapper has ever matched. Preparing to make a comeback after releasing “By the Throat” with Eyedea and Abilities, Eyedea passed away in 2010 due to a heroin overdose. Bringing an unfortunate end to the life of one of music’s best kept secrets.

Top 5 Metal Bands of the 90s

Back with a metal top 5! This list (in no particular order) has what in my opinion are the best metal bands to come out of the 90s. Without further ado, let’s get right into it!

1. Alice In Chains

Years Active: 1987-2002, 2005-present

Style of music: Grungy, sludgy, depressingly dark metal mixed with a hint of classic rock and blues.

Why you should check them out: Alice in chains set the tone of nineties metal with the release of their debut “Facelift”. Sparking a trend for metal bands to play slower, Alice became one of the nineties’ most prominent acts. The death of original singer Layne Staley prompted a breakup in 2002, but the band reformed with new singer William Duvall. Since then, they’ve been putting out albums and going strong.

2. Deftones

Years active: 1988-present

Style of music: A mixture of low end nu metal brutality and shoegazy ethereal soundscapes. 

Why you should check them out: These guys were easily one of the first bands to hit it big in the “Nu metal” scene. With the release of their magnum opus “White Pony”, Deftones brought an experimentation to metal that was seldom seen. Since then, the band has continued with each album to push the envelope of what metal can sound and feel like.

3. Tool

Years active: 1990-present

Style of music: Picture Led Zepplin esque hard rock soaked in psychedelia and punctuated with bone crunching riffs.

Why you should check them out: Tool is a band that many modern day metal acts owe a lot to. They are perhaps the sole reason why metal stayed relevant in the nineties, and their use of baffling art/lyrics, incredibly long and dense pieces, and melody served as important notes other metal acts took down. Perhaps even more infamous is their relationship with the press, which is waverly at best.

4. Pantera

Years active: 1981-2003 (2004 permanently sealed their disbandment)

Style of music: An extreme blend of heavy, low end riffs, pummeling rhythms, and death metal inspired vocals.

Why you should check them out: Easily one of the biggest metal acts to come out of the south, Pantera put metal in the forefront during the nineties. Their trademark “Groove metal” sound was very eminent on their breakout album “Cowboys From Hell”. They would go on to reach even more extreme heights on their next couple of albums, but unfortunately the band would break up in 2003 due to strained relationships. Guitarist Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed during a performance with his other group Damageplan. All but ending the possibility of a reunion to ever occur.

 5. Rage Against the Machine

Years active: 1991-2000, 2007-2011 (on hiatus)

Style of music: An exciting blend of sabbath inspired riffs, punk rock attitude, and menacing rapping.

Why you should check them out: Without a doubt, Rage was one of the biggest acts in the nineties. Their unique blend of styles would go on to influence countless groups to attempt the “rap metal” style. Rage’s political messages and true intent made them an invigorating band to listen to, and their live shows have been praised by many as some of the best ever. With no new plans to record or do any more concerts, RATM’s future is questionable at best.

7 Independent Hip Hop labels to Check Out.

As a self-proclaimed music nerd, I love finding out about new underground/independent talent. Thus, I decided to post this list of 7 independent rap labels, so that others can discover and support their rosters of talent.

1. Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE)

Founded by Anthony Tiffith in 2004, this Carson California label has become the forefront of rap’s new school. Boasting an impeccable catalogue of projects, the label currently has Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q, Ab Soul, Isaiah Rashad, SZA, and Kendrick Lamar in its ranks. Chances are, you’ve probably seen or heard TDE mentioned at least once. Their presence has become very well established.

2. Strange Music

Easily one of the most successful independent labels ever, Strange music has been going strong since its founding in 1999. Established by famed emcee Tech N9ne, the label boasts a large roster that includes the likes of Ces Cru, Murs, and Krizz Kaliko. For fans of the “chopper” style of rap flow, this label is for you.

3. Funk Volume

Founded in 2009 by now established rapper Hopsin, Funk Volume has had its fair share of success in the 2010s. Serving as the home to rappers such as Dizzy Wright, Jarren Benton, and Swizz, Funk Volume has achieved an incredibly devoted following from fans. As a result, the label has seen its artists grace the XXL freshman cover for three years in a row (2012-2014). If that doesn’t signify fandom, I don’t know what does.

4. Hellfyre Club

Seen as more of a collective than a rap label, prolific emcee Nocando created Hellfyre Club in 2011 to band together the underground’s best artists. Almost immediately the label saw success in artists such as Milo, Open Mike Eagle, and Busdriver. Coming off of an incredible string of releases in 2014, the future of Hellfyre club looks very bright.

5. Rhymesayers Entertainment

Going twenty years strong, Rhymesayers has served as the hub of Minneapolis hip hop since 1995. Created by Slug and Ant of the famed duo Atmosphere, the label has seen a number of acclaimed albums be released from its artists (some have even been regarded as classics of underground hip hop). Containing a large line up that includes the likes of Brother Ali and MF Doom, time will only tell if Rhymesayers can continue to expand on its legacy.

6. Mass Appeal Records

Headed up by the one and only Nas, Mass Appeal records is currently seeing a wave of success thanks to its fairly new line up. Created as an official label in 2014, powerhouses such as Run the Jewels, Fashawn, and Bishop Nehru rep the brand hard. In addition to being a boasting label, Mass Appeal also runs a magazine and blog dedicated to music and street culture. Making it a very respectable source for all things hip hop.

7. Cinematic Music Group

Founded by Jonny Shipes in 2007, CMG became a noteworthy label by the time 2010 rolled around. Signing artists such as Big K.R.I.T., Joey Bada$$, Smoke DZA, and Mick Jenkins have allowed the label to achieve much success as far as music is concerned. With many of the artists on CMG gaining increased mainstream appeal, it will be interesting to see how long CMG maintains its underground status.

My 2015 XXL Freshman List

It’s been a bit since I last posted, but today I wanted to discuss who I would pick to be on the XXL Freshman list this year. With XXL hopefully dropping the issue sometime soon, let’s get right into it.

1. Mick Jenkins

Who he is: A 23 year old rapper hailing from Chicago (and born in Alabama).

Style of music: Conscious lyrics rapped in a gravely baritone over water/nature inspired beats.

Why he could be on the list: Mick blew up last year with the release of his mixtape “The Water[s]”. Since then, he’s been touring nonstop with the likes of Joey Bada$$ and Kirk Knight. With his project Wave[s] on the way, now is the time for Mick to take the next step and earn some fame.

Reasons that he wouldn't make it: None. Frankly Mick has a rapidly growing fanbase, and it’s only going to grow larger. XXL needs to take the initiative now while they have the chance.

2. OG Maco

Who he is: A wacked out trap rapper from the city of Atlanta.

Style of music: Delivering trap rap influenced lyrics while screaming at the top of his lungs over some abstract beats.

Why he should be on the list: OG had a huge year in 2014 with the release of “U guessed it”. The viral song immediately made his name known, and he soon followed this up by releasing several mixtapes and projects. Slowly but surely, Maco is becoming the new big face of the Atlanta scene.

Reasons that he wouldn't make it: Again none. In fact, XXL seems to really be pushing for this guy to be on their list. Just go to their youtube channel and watch his pitch video.

3. Raury

Who he is: A very young emcee/folk singer hailing from the city of Atlanta.

Style of music: A mixture of indie folk delivered with a flow sometimes resembling Andre 3000.

Why he should be on the list: Raury blew up in 2014 with the release of his mixtape “Indigo Child”. That buzz alone got him an interview on Hot 97, recognition from various music magazines such as Pitchfork, and an opening slot during the Outkast reunion shows. How much more fame can a newbie achieve?

Reasons that he wouldn't make it: Technically speaking, Raury isn't “hip hop”. His blending of styles could make him be seen as an outsider in the eyes of XXL.

4. Bishop Nehru

Who he is: A New York emcee that is currently only 18 years of age.

Style of music: A resurrection of the Golden age of hip hop. Spitterific lyrics mixed with mellow beats.

Why he should be on the list: Nehru got shortlisted in 2014 when he was up for nomination. Since then, he’s dropped the NehruvianDoom collaboration that he did with MF Doom as well as the Brilliant Youth Ep with Dizzy Wright. He also signed with Mass Appeal records, which is headed up by New York’s own Nas. The kid’s been seriously putting in work, and it’s time he earned his recognition.

Reasons that he wouldn't make it: Unfortunately for Bishop, his fanbase is currently very limited. Unless you dig the classic era of New York hip hop, chances are that you probably will pass over this dude. While Nehru has been trying vigorously to expand his fanbase, he still has a bit more to go.

5. Boldy James

Who he is: A no-nonsense street rapper repping the Motor City.

Style of music: Gritty and real lyrics detailing street life presented over some dark and murky beats.

Why he should make the list: Also shortlisted in 2014, James signed with Mass Appeal records shortly after. He’s dropped a few mixtapes as well, and his presence on the list could put Detroit back on the map.

Reasons that he wouldn’t make it: Boldy’s following is still pretty small. Compared to other nominees for the list, his fanbase dwarfs in comparison. And with fellow Detroit rapper Dej Loaf also up for a spot, it’s likely the list will swing more in her favor (she did have a feature with Eminem after all).

6. Lil Herb

Who he is: The youngest and realest drill rapper coming out of Chicago.

Style of music: Banging drill beats graced with a finesse of lyricism and seriousness.

Why he should make the list: Herb has been talked about since 2013, and his fellow Chi-town artists have nothing but respect for him. His mixtape “Welcome to Fazoland” gave 2014 a real glimpse into Chicago street life, and he is only bound to give more.

Reasons that he wouldn't make the list: None. He’s been buzzed about and praised for quite some time. He’s young and has appeal. He did a pitch on the XXL youtube channel. Just give him the spot already!

7. Vince Staples

Who he is: The next big young rapper to emerge from Long Beach California.

Style of music: Straight up west coast gangsta rap merged with some almost odd future-esque minimal/abrasive beats.

Why he should make the list: His Ep Hell Can Wait made 2014 a very enjoyable year for the West Coast. Vince has toured with Schoolboy Q, Mac Miller, and Joey Bada$$ which has helped build his following. His debut album Summertime ‘06 is set to drop June 30. What better way to build hype than to be on the front of hip hop’s biggest magazine?

Reasons that he wouldn't make the list: Vince has been in the game for a while now, and he may have passed the point of “Freshman” status. While most of the nominees have yet to drop an album or get signed, Vince has already signed with Def Jam and is in his album cycle. Thus it’s safe to say that Vince’s odds are not 100%.

8. Your Old Droog

Who he is: A Ukrainian immigrant that has taken hip hop by storm as Nas’s disciple.

Style of music: Pure, unfiltered nineties hip hop. He himself has been mistaken for Nas due to incredible similarity.

Why he should make the list: Droog has been making waves ever since people mistook him for Nas. He’s been featured on Hot 97, and he’s dropped his Kinison Ep that received solid reviews. As a blossoming new face, Droog could easily utilize the XXL list to impress some new fans.

Reasons that he wouldn't make the list: Droog is still small compared to other XXL freshmen. With a somewhat niche following, he has yet to break away from his nineties inspired sound. Perhaps this lack of diversity will prevent Droog from gracing the cover of XXL.

9. QuEst

Who he is: A talented spitter hailing from the beaches of Miami.

Style of music: Picture Kendrick Lamar sped up to about twice his usual speed, and then picture him talk about his rise to fame.

Why he should make the list: QuEst easily dropped one of 2014′s best projects with his “Searching Sylvan” mixtape. His buzz has been steadily growing and his fans are eager to await what he does next.

Reason that he wouldn't make the list: QuEst gave his fans some sad news a few months ago, and said that he had left from his label Visionary Music Group (headed up by Maryland rapper Logic). With no label attached to his name and a fanbase that is still small, getting on the freshman cover will be a tough sell for this worthy emcee.

10. Denzel Curry

Who he is: An oddball rapper hailing from Carol City Florida.

Style of music: Dark and grimy subjects are displayed over some murky and often psychedelic instrumentals.

Why he should make the list: Curry has been busy in 2014. Relentless touring and feature work (see Dillon Cooper’s X:XX project) have kept Curry relevant in hip hop. Still hot off the buzz of his Nostalgic 64 album, Curry is expected to only improve further.

Reasons that he wouldn't make the list: Though Nostalgic 64 was well acclaimed, that album dropped in 2013. It’s been almost 2 years since Curry has released any new music of his own, and that could be a major thorn when it comes to consideration from XXL.

A promising new rock band

What's going on guys? I know it's been a bit since I last posted, but I have here a project that I feel deserves some attention. For any hard rock/metal fan that's looking for some new music, fear not! Rock band Vie Jester might satisfy your tastes.

Vie Jester is a hard rock/progressive rock/alternative metal band hailing from L.A. Etches In Aether is the band's new Ep and is their second project. Containing five tracks and spanning about a half hour, the project itself is a nice, quick listen that isn't demanding at all. Listeners will have no trouble getting through it, and they'll definitely want to hit the replay button when track five finishes.

Stylistically, the band takes a lot of influence from groups like Tool and Mastodon. Tracks on the Ep such as "Hollow Graffiti" demonstrate how Kyle Guererro (the band's guitarist and vocalist) utilizes riffs reminiscent of Adam Jones to help drive the trio's songs. These riffs are matched excellently by the group's rhythm section, and the band is able to create a variety of different but cohesive sections within a song. Thankfully, the band also experiments with some electronic elements (similar to the ones used by 30 Seconds to Mars on their debut album) to help distinguish themselves. While I felt that the effects could have been integrated a bit better into the songs, I appreciated that the band wanted to venture into new territory and take a risk. Combine these elements with some solid vocals and lyrics, and that is essentially the gist of Ethces In Aether. 

Overall, Vie Jester's Ethces In Aether is a project that I would strongly recommend be checked out. Anybody believing that rock music is dead should use this Ep to change their mind. The project can be streamed for free on the band's reverbnation page (which I will post a link to at the bottom). Do check it out, and seriously support these dudes. I personally am looking forward to what they will put out next.

Top 10 hip hop albums of the year: Number 10

To continue on with my list for 2014's best rap albums, I present the number 10 pick...

Artist: Schoolboy Q

Album: Oxymoron

Reasons to listen to this album: 

In all honesty, I never thought I would enjoy a rap project from a guy like schoolboy q. Mainstreamy, party type hip hop is stuff that I try to avoid. However, do not be fooled by some of the singles surrounding this project ("Collard Greens" and "Man of the year"). This is in fact one of the most introspective projects to drop all year.

The entire set of tracks on this project have a consistent, dark mood running through them. Each of the 12 songs present a chapter in the story of how schoolboy rose from being a dealer on Hoover street, to the artist he is today. Lyrics dealing with drug addiction and gang-banging are presented with the utmost honesty. Honesty which reveals that all of these disturbing actions are done for the purpose of providing for family (specifically Q's daughter). It's a well thought out concept that is surprisingly touching at certain moments ("Break the bank"). Creating a listen that is nothing but cohesive.

Contributing greatly to that cohesion are the instrumentals that adorn the songs themselves. There is an excellent variety to choose from when listening to oxymoron. From the harsh and booming thuds of street grit ("Gangsta" and "The purge") to the majestic and gracious melodies of excess ("Hell of a night"), this album has it all. Producers such as Pharrell, Tyler the creator, and THC ensure that the ride is bumpy but smooth.

Going back to the lyrical aspect, schoolboy q does deliver some great description when telling his story. His narrative on the track "Studio" does an excellent job of detailing an artist who wants to go home to his girl, but can't because he has to finish his work in the studio. The words coupled with an aggressive delivery (evoking that of a pseudo-scream) make Q a compelling emcee to listen to. Allowing his very body to be used as an instrument of telling the story.

Reasons why it's number 10:

Although some fantastic beats were brought to the table for this project, they don't really present any new ideas. Yes the dark undertones fit the mood perfectly, but the beats are really just of the standard run-of-the-mill mainstream hip hop style. Those expecting something groundbreaking are going to leave a little disappointed.

Q is also not the most original of lyricists. While his verses are indeed descriptive and enticing, the words "bitch", "pussy", and "fuck" pop up quite frequently. Understandably Schoolboy likes his women, but perhaps a more diverse vocabulary would have made the listen even more interesting. After all, this is the album that Mac Miller said "would be better than good kid maad city".

Do check this project out regardless. As stated before it is extremely coherent, entertaining, and a little heart warming. Feel free to leave feedback in the comments area and as always, live peacefully.

Top 10 hip hop albums of the year: Honorable mention

With 2014 winding down, it seems like pretty much every music mag is doing their top album lists. Seeing as I'm an avid listener of the arts, I shall join my contemporaries with providing a list of my own. This here is my honorable mention for my list and it is..

Artist: The Underachievers 

Album: Cellar Door: Terminus Ut Exordium

Resons to listen to this album:

Both AK and Issa have relentless flows that shine through on this whole project. The opener on this album (Luminescence) is one example that showcases the rapper's talents. The whole affair kicks off with a tripped out guitar before the two go absolutely bananas. Trading off rapid fire verses with one another, the two spit so much metaphysical and spiritual imagery that you would think they were spirits themselves.

The instrumentals on this project also are incredibly solid. Songs like "Incandescent" and "Metropolis" have great banger beats that have a dash of psychedelic glitter. The beat for the song "Felcity" in particular sounds fantastic. With soaring and heavenly melodies laid into the beat, it works perfectly to compliment AK and Issa as they rap about leading by example and being change one wishes to see.

Finally and most importantly, this is probably the best project to come out of New York this year. In its 12 tracks, the duo present content that is unique and relevant to themselves. They use their experiences in the world today to fuel their passion for their spiritual beliefs. Not many rappers today can talk about concepts such as creating a utopia of wisdom (Metropolis). In this, the underachievers have carved out a niche that the average rap listener should at least explore.

Why it's an honorable mention:

While this project showed commendable strength and ability from the duo, I felt that two elements kept this project from making the list itself. For one, the group's lyrics dealing with spiritualism have in a sense been done too much. On their mixtape before this album (Indigoism), the duo did pretty much the same thing but for 17 songs instead of 12. Though the content is unique, it has become a bit repetitive for the group. In addition to the content, some of the song structures themselves needed some more development. On a few tracks like "Chrysalis" the group throws a couple of verses over a beat with no chorus. It would normally be pleasing to hear a track done in this manner, except that Issa's flow in particular becomes a little jumbled. Had the two sat down with the intent to flush out some catchier elements, I think the result would have been better. As is, this is still a solid project that deserves a listen.

"One and All" Track Review

2014 is slowly but surely coming to a close, and December 9th is beginning to look like a giant release fest. Many projects including Lil Wayne's Tha Carter V (part 1) seem to be dropping on this day. One of which is the new Smashing Pumpkins album Monuments to an Elegy (which will be continued in the Teargarden by Kaleidyscope vein).

Just today the Pumpkins (Billy Corgan and Jeff Schroder) dropped the album's second single "One and All". After giving the song a few listens, I can say with confidence that I dig this track. It's a great teaser for what's to come from the upcoming album.

Stylistically the track sounds similar to those during the band's Mellon Collie era. There's a definite grungy feel to it, but also a certain finesse. Here Corgan sings of people being young and free as guitars crash over him. The instruments sound as if My Bloody Valentine borrowed the Foo Fighter's equipment to distort their melodic aura. I really like how modern the tone sounds here. While it hearkens back to atypical Pumpkins, there is a nice polish to round out the song for a 2014 time placement. Also Tommy Lee of Motley Crue (and Methods of Mayhem for the nu metal fans) plays the drums behind Billy and Jeff, and I think he fits perfectly. His subtle snare rolls and timely rhythm help give the band some much needed edge. Making for a great package overall.

My complaints are very few here, perhaps the only one being the track's repetitiveness. Though the tune certainly is catchy, it can seem to drag a bit due to Corgan's repeated phrases. Especially as he delivers those lyrics in his usual croony whine. Aside from that, I actually am curious to hear what the Pumpkins have up their sleeve for this project. "Pay for it" Track review

It's been a disappointing year for hip hop to say the least. Albums have fallen short of expectations, projects have been shelved (cough cough A$AP Mob) or delayed (oh yeah that B4DA$$ thing), and not nearly enough new talent has surfaced (Bobby Shmurda doesn't count). It is now entering into November, and much of the attention has been focused on what albums still have to come. Lil Wayne recently delayed his project, Big Krit's Cadillactica is dropping in mid-November, but perhaps the biggest anticipation lies with two artists from the west coast.

TDE (top dawg entertainment for you noobs) promised to have their entire roster drop a project this year. So far, four out of the six artists have upheld the bargain. These projects have ranged from great ("Cilvia Demo" and "Oxymoron") to meh ("Z" and "These Days"). What is currently holding everyone at attention is the fact the remaining two projects are coming from TDE's best.

Both Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock have spent the last quarter hyping their respective projects. K Dot gave released his song "I" (a track that I actually reviewed) to a rather polarizing reception, and Rock released his song "Parental advisory" to some overall good reception. These two singles sparked some hope that TDE will come through with releasing the two albums.

Well fans of the west coast label should be very impressed with this new track from Jay Rock. Both he and Kendrick have verses on it, and, I'm not gonna lie, it sounds fantastic.

Passion is the word that comes to mind when listening to this song. Right from the beginning a beautiful piano and chorus from Chantal Kreviazuk kick things off. Her voice is incredibly soulful (despite a few "breathy" moments) and really gives an idea of the track's power. After that some strings kick in and the rappers step up.

Now I've been a Jay Rock fan ever since I first heard the man spit (okay yes I heard him first on "Money Trees" but I went and checked his stuff out after). Throughout the entire year of 2014, Rock's features have stuck out as some of the best. His aggressive delivery and intricate lyrics always make it fun to listen to him. Thankfully, Rock again demonstrates these qualities again on his two verses. Immediately the sense is given that Rock is fighting HARD. He references the dangers of living in the street and those posed by others around him. The epic instrumental compliments him as he describes imagery of guns, fake smiles, and violence. Despite these threats, Rock makes it clear that he will not stop and won't go down without a fight. The idea of wanting to escape and defeat one's demons seems to be the theme here, and it works. It's a great set of bars that I think are some of the best Rock's had all year.

In between the two Jay Rock verses, we are treated to yet another verse from "King" Kendrick Lamar. The man has been on a lot of songs since his blow up in 2012. While it is always nice to hear Kendrick in his usual robotic and intellectual manner, some of his features have annoyingly overdone these mannerisms. However, such is not the case with his verse here. Kendrick sounds passionate, hungry, and on point. The distortion effect on his vocals give them an extra layer of aggression. As per usual, his verse is quite lyrical and contains a bit of boasting about his legacy. If only he had demonstrated this on "I".

To wrap it up, I am super stoked to see what Jay Rock and Kendrick will accomplish with their respective projects. If this is any indication to where their directions are headed, I think we'll be in for a treat. Let's hope that they still see a 2014 release.

"Christ Conscious" review

Today for turntable Tuesday, I will review the new Joey Badass single "Christ Conscious". This track dropped last night (or technically this morning) at midnight. It is his second single to drop from "B4DA$$" which is due out sometime soon (at least that's what Joey seems to be saying). 

So after listening to this track a couple of times and watching the music video, I can clearly see the pros and cons with releasing a track like this. Let's start with the pros (no pun intended).

Pros:

Joey by this point has established himself as having a flair for the nostalgic. He's dropped two projects that are caked in 90s throwback with their boom bap styled beats. This track is no different. With its smoky jazz tone and drums, the beat sounds like it was lifted off of an A Tribe Called Quest album. Joey comes through with his usual aggressive delivery and spits some solid verses. Thematically dealing with comparing himself to a lyrical messiah, Joey raps some quality lines and stays on beat.

It's in a way a smart move for Joey to make the track like this. He doesn't seem to want to strive for commercial music, so the fact that he sticks to his guns probably gives him an edge with the production. Hardcore Joey fans will most likely dig the track for sticking to that 90s sound. However, I do have some gripes with this particular track.

Cons:

Yes Joey is sticking to his roots and spitting some usual fire. Yes Joey has a solid beat to back him up. But is he playing too safe with his music?

One of the things I would like to see from Joey is some experimentation. I get that he's keen with bringing New York's classic sound back, and he does do that style justice. However, not going to lie, it is starting to get BORING. 

If I was to create "B4DA$$" based on this song and "Big Dusty" (the album's first single), it would sound way too similar throughout. When Pro Era put out "The Shift" this past May, I actually was pretty excited. Not because of the new music necessarily, but because it was something DIFFERENT. For the first time ever, Pro Era was rapping over instrumentals that were more modern and trap influenced. It got me excited for what Joey might do for this album. Sadly, all Joey seems to want to do is rap over boom bap. It's a nice sound and style, but it does get old after a while (look at that rhyme right there).

The only other complaint I have with this track is the lack of a hook. I get with Joey you're not really going to have a hook, but at least give me something. Due to the short length of the track, it just seems like some unnecessary bars.

What have we learned today?

Overall I'm feeling content with this song but kind of nervous for "B4DA$$". I really hope that Joey steps a bit out of his comfort zone to give us some gems.
