Almost Lover
As the day came to a close, Belle suddenly remembers the most wonderful memory… However, she didn’t fully comprehend what she remembered until she started strumming chords on her guitar. Eventually, she found that the chords created a song she heard once before. Probably in a different land where she had sailed too.
"Arthur…? Was that his name?"
He didn't want to believe it. Didn't want to believe what people had been telling him. After everything that had happened between them she now... forgot. Now, he was standing at her doorway trying to convince himself to knock. He couldn't do it though. What if the rumors where true? What was he supposed to do then? Letting out a small sigh, he leaned against the side of the door, hand poised to knock.
The faint sound of a music followed by a soft voice instantly distracted him. He recognized that voice. It was one he had heard many moons ago sing softly. Pushing himself away from the wall, he slowly walked towards the back porch where it seemed to be coming from.
She was facing away from him softly strumming her guitar. He stayed there, quietly listening, not wanting to interrupt her. "Isabelle...." he whispered softly as he heard the last thing she said.

Denial. There was so much denial. She listened, but with only her mind. Her heart was guarded with high stone wall. There was no way that she’d let it break by the same pranks again. There was a part of her that wanted to believe his every word. But for some reason, there was no way she could fathom the thought of him saying-
"I-I love you Isabelle Lisboa-Carriedo."
Her tears streamed faster. Isabelle was overjoyed to hear those words again… However, the pain of the past wouldn’t let her move on. Or maybe, she just can’t let it go. The past was what made her who she is today. It shaped her, and she thought it defined who she was as well. After giving everything a second to sink in, Belle finally spoke her mind… And oh, what it had to say was something she didn’t want at all.
"N-No… No you don’t. You hate me! You’ve cut all ties with me just because I joined my brother to form that Union! Sure, I’ll admit that it was mistake! But really? I understand you and Antonio had some… Some troubles seeing eye to eye… But.. B-But!!" She took a step back to tangle her foot in rope. With a short gasp, she fell to her knees… Causing her to cry even harder.
"Y-you can hold me all you want… Kiss me if you get lonely… I’ll even let you promise eternity… B-But… I won’t be able to live it down if you said you loved me… I-I’m not someone that can be loved, Inglaterra… Please… Stop toying with me…"
Her words cut deep, but he knew they were true. His actions in the past were something he truly regretted now, but there was nothing he could do about it. Regret and Sorrow consumed him at the sight of her tears.
"I could never hate you! Don't you understand?" He stepped closer falling to his knees before her. His hands reached out to touch her shoulder, no longer being able to stop himself. "I was foolish. I.... I did care about you then, but I was too busy thinking through my hate for your brother and everything else going on to actually focus on my other emotions and what was right there in front of me."
"That was all in the past though. My actions towards you.... everything." He chocked on his words staring at a spot next to her head not being able to look into her eyes at that second. "We are nations. We can't hold on to everything that happened and that we have done, but we need to learn and attempt to move on. I-I don't think I can tell you how sorry I am for my actions in the past."
Looking back at her face, he tried to express everything he had been holding back. "Isabelle, please believe me when I say that I love you. You are everything I could ever want and more. I tried to stay away in the past knowing nothing good could come out of it. I denied my own feelings! I just....I can't anymore. I know that I don’t deserve you after everything I've done. I know you deserved better than me… but I just can't stay away."
That-British-Gentleman Has Visited The Shop!
"Eh?" She blinked and nearly toppled over, was that Oliver? No…there were quite a few major differences… “C-can I help you…?”
Arthur stared at the woman before him surprised. She looked familiar, yet different.... It gave him an odd feeling, like that time he met his sugar-too-bloody-happy counterpart. "Pardon, this place just got my attention as I walked by..."

A groan escaped his lips as she began to run. Of course she would make this harder than it was supposed to be! She always did. But little things like these were the reason he felt the way he did about her. Leaping forward he tried to run after her. His breath was coming out in short pants and he knew he wouldn’t reach her on time.
A small green blur flew past him, stopping her from climbing into the ship. He mentally thanked minty for being there as he hurried forward to catch her before she tried anything else.
He stared at her back willing her to turn around. ”Isabelle…” he breathed out, stepping closer towards her. His hand hesitated at touching her before he put his head down, sighing in deafeat. “My dear sweet Isabelle. I do need something….You. I need you.”
Belle prayed that he would stay there and just leave her alone. But what through her for a loop was his answer. What the hell did he mean? Of course, the answer was just as it sounded. 'I need you.'
This must have been a stupid joke. He didn’t need her ever since the start of the Iberian Union. Since then, he never even once wrote to her… "This is getting old, Arthur…" he always pulled this sort of thing when they were much, much younger… Especially during his punk years. He’d throw the term about every now and again, but she had to draw the line when his teasing got a little too much for her.
"You don’t need me. I told you before… I’m not your nanny. You can fix," Belle choked on her tears. Damn, now it gave him the truth that she was in tears… After a while, she went off to finish her sentence. "You can fix your own problems now, Senhor Inglaterra."
It was then she finally turned to face him. God, she was a mess. Face was tear stain… Eyes were red and swollen… This was the last thing she wanted him to see before she left. “You never needed me…”
All he wanted to do was step forward and take her into his arms. To hold her. He wanted her to turn around and just look at him so he could show her how much he cared for her... how much he needed her.
Arthur knew what she was thinking. His words probably reminded her of the old times. Of when he used to say things like that without a care. He didn't blame her for not believing him. But this time it was different. He actually meant it when he said it to her. For once he was trying to put his all forward. "Please... Isabelle listen to me."
It hurt. He could feel the ache in his chest when she called him by that name. She'd been using his human name for so long... it felt wrong for her to call him anything but Arthur. All this did, was show him how serious she was. The tears on her face once she turned around made the feeling a thousand times worse.
He stepped closer to her, his hand reaching up to touch her cheek before thinking twice about it and dropping it. "I do need you, love. I'm a fool for not having realised it before. But I know now. You have always been there for me. You actually rushed to the hospital to see me once you found out and seeing you that day.... its when i started to realise. I don't want to be away from you. I need you in my life."
"I-I love you Isabelle Lisboa-Carriedo."

It took him a good ten minutes to realise that no one was home once he arrived. He knocked and called her name a few times before letting his head fall on the door. He stared at the ground in confusion before it finally hit him.
No. No. No. The horror was evident on his face as he realised the truth. He had a brief recollection from his time in the hospital when she said something to him. He remembered her mentioning something about going out on a voyage….
At that though, he took of as fast as his legs could carry him in the direction of the docks. He needed to see here…. to tell her. He couldn’t hold it himself back anymore. He had to do it now.
He had let things go on too long. Memories of the past ran through his mind. Of their times together. He knew he cared about her back then but he never had though if his emotions might have been running deeper. But now he knew. He loved the bloody infuriating woman and he had to tell her.
Why did he have to realise it so late? Why couldn’t he have realised his emotions years ago? Why couldn’t he just have realised it even a few days ago, when she was with him at the hospital… when she looked at him like that?
Clenching his hands at his sides he stumbled forward managing to stop himself from falling as he reached the docks. He hadn’t been out of the hospital for long, so his body still hurt at times. At the moment his side was aching and he was completely out of breath from having run there, But he could see her in the distance and that was all that mattered to him.
"Isabelle!" Walking forward, he keep his eyes on her, watching her walk towards the ship. "Isabelle Lisboa-Carriedo!" He called out hoping to catch her attention.
"A-Artie?" Her body turned but it stopped itself halfway. Did she really want to see him? Now of all times? She had a job to do, for Government’s sake! And she was not going to let him stop her… With a heart heart, Belle faced forward and began to run towards her ship. The crew must be worried, they had a schedule to keep.
Her eyes began to streak with tears as she looked up at the massive vessel. Just when she was about to climb the ladder to get on board, the blasted thing was pulled away from her reach. “M-Minty!” Damn rabbit… Now she had no choice but to face the music…
From behind her, she heard the heavy breathing and panting. However, she didn’t turn to face him. She couldn’t… Not like this. "Arthur. What an unexpected surprise… Did you need something?"
A groan escaped his lips as she began to run. Of course she would make this harder than it was supposed to be! She always did. But little things like these were the reason he felt the way he did about her. Leaping forward he tried to run after her. Arthur sat in his desk reading the letter for the hundredth time. He already knew the words by memory, but he couldn’t help himself. There was just something about her letter; something about the way she just… knew how to make him smile no matter what.
A fond smile made its way onto his face as he softly ran his finger over the letter resting on her signature. Love Always, Isabelle. It wasn’t like it was the first letter he had received from her. During their times at sea or even when she just went away, she sent him letters signing it like that. But this time… it felt different.
It had been so long since he had felt emotions like this for someone. So long since he had actually felt this type of affection when he was near someone, and the feeling of weakness when they were away. He was in denial. After what had happened in the past, he had tried to lock away his emotions or specifically his heart, but it looks like she had found a way to get to him.
He remembered his time after the accident when he woke up. The emotions he felt when she had arrived to see him. His heart had been beating faster and a euphoria that had nothing to do with the painkillers had consumed him.
If he really though about it, the decision about what he had to do wasn’t that hard. It was actually very simple.
Running a hand through his his hair he stood up putting the letter back in his drawer. He quickly rushed downstairs to grab his coat and ran out of the house.
He had decided.
He needed to do this.
He needed to go tell her before it was too late.
Isabelle stretched before taking her captain’s hat from off the doorknob. Despite the clock read five fifteen, it surely felt much earlier than that. Maybe her old bones are finally giving in? Who knows, but what Belle knows is that this is going to be on hell of a voyage… It’s literally going to be around the world in 80 days or die trying. “I’ll be back soon everyone…” She whispered as her eyes gazed upon the many smiling faces that graced her shelf. One by one, group by group… There they were; the people she had learned to love with her heart and being. This little tradition was something she did to ensure her return. All it does was remind her that everyone is waiting for her, just as she is always waiting for them.
“Artie… ” Belle reached for the frame that held her little gentleman’s face. Even in a picture she felt lost. His cheeks, his eyes… His smile. Forget the Iberian war, the girl was still in love… No matter how you look at it. “I don’t know about this anymore… This… Is a long shot… And I have no idea if I’m going to make it.” Is she scared? Yes, and for all the right reasons. No, now is not the time to get all heartfelt. She has a crew to command, and she’ll be damned if she doesn’t get this job done right. After taking a deep breath, Isabelle set the picture back down. As she walked to the docks, all that played through her head was that moment in the hospital… God, why is this happening? Why can’t she just push these feelings away? She had done it before, so why is it so difficult now? But soon, the answer hit her…
“Damn it Arthur… I’m not supposed to care about us anymore… That ship… Has sailed.”
It took him a good ten minutes to realise that no one was home once he arrived. He knocked and called her name a few times before letting his head fall on the door. He stared at the ground in confusion before it finally hit him.
