Chapter 2
He doesn’t sleep the night after the parapet.
Everytime he closes his eyes he hears the wind again. Howling through the ravine, rain pouring down around them. The screams echoing against the rocks, the crack of someone who mis stepped just ahead of him.
Though the sounds echoing through his mind, the flashbacks playing behind his eyes, it’s not the reason he is still awake. Exhaustion is eating at him, threatening to drag him under. Sleep has never looked more dangerous before.
The matrass beneath him is thin, just barely patted. The blanket covering his body scratchy, yet he doesn’t move. Can’t move. ‘Çause Ridoc learned early in the evening that falling asleep in the rider’s quadrant is a death wish.
His eyes shift to the boy near the door, a body that hasn’t moved in hours. Ridoc keeps his breath shallow, controlled. Pretends to sleep even though deep down he is ready to fall apart. His eyelids flutter without permission, the sleep heavy and bone deep. His chest aching from how long he has held himself in one position.
But he doesn’t dare move, the sound of his own breathing terrifying him to the core.
Three hours after lights out- just three hours- that’s how long it took before the first kill was made. Someone had slipped a knife between the kid’s ribs while he was asleep. Turned towards the others in the bunkroom and said it was self defense. No one dared question it. No one dared to voice what they were all thinking.
The kid had been harmless. The rebellion marks running up his arms barely visible underneath the dried blood. Didn’t do anything wrong, just carried the wrong marks.
The next morning no one spoke of it. No one looked twice at the now empty bed in the corner of the room, still stained with blood.
They just took inventory, counted who made it through the night.
It was at that moment that Ridoc realized: there are no rules here. Only survivors.
//
The cafeteria is already half full when Ridoc walks in. The low hum of voices and the clatter of meral echoing off of the walls like it’s all a perfectly normal day. Like 68 people didn’t fall to their deaths the day prior. Like an innocent kid wasn’t coldly murdered in his sleep purely because someone felt like it.
He walks in late on purpose. Fashionably delayed one might say. Like it was his choice and not because he spend the last hour trying to scrub the fear off of his skin. Sat down in the shower long after the water turned cold. Only getting up once the shower floor was stained red because of how roughly he had been scrubbing at his hands and legs
He swings through the cafeteria easily. His step light and his smile so bright it could easily light up the sky. His gaze easily finds the position of his squad on one of the tables, grin instantly widening even further as he moves towards them.
“Good morning, my fellow emotionally unavailable war orphans.” He chirps brightly, sliding onto the bench next to Rhiannon with a dramatic flourish. “Who else is feeling well rested and ready to become a weapon?” He asks with a grin, shooting Sawyer a quick wink.
Rhiannon snorts into her mug. “You’re way to happy for someone who barely slept.”
“Sleep is for the weak.” Ridoc says, flashing her a grin. “We at Basgiath survive purely on fear and cafetaria coffee.” He says easily, taking a long sip from his mug. Rhiannon lets out another small laugh, shaking her head. “Coffee is not a proper breakfast, you need to eat properly if you wanna survive.” She lectures, narrowing her eyes on him.
Ridoc grunts into his mug, shaking is head. “After last night- food is not gonna stay inside me for long.”
Sawyer gives him a sidelong glance. Quiet and observant as always. “You really didn’t sleep, huh?” Ridoc shrugs in response, snatching a piece of bacon off of his squad mate’s plate. “Nah, didn’t wanna miss the ghost of that dead first year. Chatty guy by the way, had some interesting stories to say.” He responds with a grin.
Violet pales slightly as she looks up from her plate, staying quiet as she watches Ridoc with that unreadable gaze of hers, like she sees right through him but doesn’t push. Good. He doesn’t think he can take any pushing in that moment.
Because the truth is, his hands are still shaking. Right underneath the table where no one can see the twitch of his fingers, the half moon cuts his own nails made while trying to ground himself. The small stain of blood from how roughly he had been gripping his dagger the whole night.
No one knows how he feels. Every laugh leaving his lips is a release valve, carefully timed. Every joke a distraction from the same thought that had hunted him throughout the night: ‘They could have killed me, any of them’
Maybe the silent one that had been across of the room, or the the two who continued to talk to each other throughout the night. The kid right across the cafetaria who was just eating his sandwich, unbeknown to the stare.
They could have easily slit his throat in the dark, no one would have stopped them. No one would have even blinked at the action. Just like no one looked twice at the dead marked one in the dorms. Blood still fresh on the white sheets.
He wouldn’t have even been able to scream.
“Hey, Ridoc.” Rhiannon says softly, nudging him just slightly. “You okay?”
Ridoc blinks. Realising he has been staring at his coffee like it might just grow a head. “Course I’m okay. Just thinking about how hot colonel Panchek looked on the flight field yesterday.” He easily responds, plastering a grin onto his face and sening his friends a wink. “Anyone know if he is single?”
Violet groans, shaking her head with a small laugh. “Gods, you’re the words.”
“And yet, here I am. Alive, extremely handsome, slightly traumatized but- make it fashion.”
The laughter eventually dies down as everyone goes back to their previous conversations. Their voices slowly blending in with the hushed whispers around the cafeteria. The sound of cutlery scraping against plates, and the soft laugh here and there that sounds to rough against the tension in the room.
They laugh. The joke lands. Meaning he must be doing something right.
But deep inside his heart is still hammering against his ribs. His hands still twitching on his lap. Every breath just a tad to shallow.
The air shifts, Ridoc feels it before he turns his head. A soft hush. Almost like someone drew a blade without making a sound. The kind of silence that doesn’t particularly means peace, it means everyone is pretending not to notice the one thing demanding attention.
He turns away from their table, letting his eyes room over the different groups before he sees them.
Three cadets in black sitting in the far corner in the back. Not uniform black, everyone is supposed to wear it, but a hollow kind of black. The kind of black that leaves a bad feelings, that swallows the light around you.
Though it could also be Fen Riorson’s son fucking with the shadows once again.
Ridoc watches them closely, ignoring everything around them as he let his eyes linger on the group. Or well- on one boy in particular. He is not the loudest of the group, nor is he the tallest. Not the one with the biggest scar or the one that moves like everything and everyone arounds him fears him.
But somehow, the one Ridoc can’t seem to look away from.
He moves like he is holding himself together through sheer forcr and will. A perfect replica of the boy sitting in front of him. His shoulders squared, back ramrod straight and expression hard.
But it’s his hands that twitch at his side, his jaw that is locked just a little to tight. The hollowness in his expression, that Ridoc notices. The first year wondering whether the boy looks like a soldier… or a ghost.
For a fleeting second their eyes meet.
It’s not even a full moment, only a small flicker.
The pit in his stomach turns cold as he turns his gaze away from the three marked ones in the back. “Who’s that?” He murmurs, turning his attention back towards his squad. The three- who were mid conversation- turn to him like he just stepped on their cat. “What?” he asks, raising an eyebrow.
But Ridoc swears something in his chest stutters.
Like the boys saw through and dismissed him at the very same time. Like he saw something not remembering. Not worth spending a second glance.
“Don’t even think about it Ridoc.” Violet says, shaking her head.
Ridoc grins, eyes once again shifting to the table in the back. Watching as one of the older boys gets up, pats the other on the shoulder before walking off. “Why not? They look hot- lil extra ink, some angst.. true commitment to rocking that emo look. Not to mention they ore older.” He replies, sending Violet a wink.
“They’re marked for a reason.” Rhiannon cuts in, her voice low. Ridoc rolls his eyes, downing the last of his coffee. “You’re being dramatic, they act all scary but they are not any different from us.” He says simply.
Sawyer finally looks up from his plate, letting out a long breath. “They are, Ridoc.” He says, eyes steady.
“they served in the Rebellion.” Violet adds, her voice low as she glances over him. “Not trained. Fought.”
Ridoc frowns, his brows drowing together. “They’re our age-“
“Some of them were 7 when they first picked up a sword.”
His stomach turns, the words falling down like stones. Something didn’t feel right, nothing about it felt right. “So what? They’re just here now? Going to classes with us like? Pretending they’re normal students like us?” he asks, ridiculously. “Being allowed to be here even though they fought for the wrong side? And lost may I add.”
Violet let’s out a long breath, pushing some fruit over her plate. “Allowed might be the wrong word.. Forced, more like it. Watched over, keeping an eye on.” She says softly.
Rhiannon snorts slightly, shaking her head. “That’s putting it mildly. More like a free pass to try and survive the death sentence they got.” Silence falls over the table after that. Ridoc swallows as he lets the words sink in, lifting his eyes just slightly to watch the table in the back of the hall.
“The boy I asked about? Xaden Junior?” He asks.
“Seriously? He fought in a war, Ridoc. Survived it, watch his family burn in front of him and then thrown into a death college. That changes people.” Rhiannon says sternly, getting up from her seat. “Seriously, don’t even think about it. Come on, we are gonna be late for Squad Battles.”
Violet nods, getting up as well but not without turning towards him one more time. “Just stay clear Ridoc, you have no idea what they are capable off.”
He watches her leaving together with the rest of his squad, finally letting they weight of the morning settle onto his shoulders. His grin slips as he glances back over at the table in the far back of the hall. Watching as one of the older boys gets up and pats the other on the shoulder.
He watches the boy again. The hollow stillness around him, the exhaustion tiredly caged behind those eyes. He sighs, getting up to follow the others towards their first class. Trying to ignore the twisting feeling in his gut. Not fear, no, not towards him.
It’s curiosity that clamps it’s claws around his stomach.
In this Bodhi x Ridoc fanfic we watch as watch these two be drawn together by unspoken pain, they begin to unravel each other’s facades in stolen nights and secret glances. But their love is more than forbidden—it’s dangerous. Because Bodhi is bound by oaths, and Ridoc doesn’t yet understand what it truly means to love a Marked One.
And in a world built on war, obedience, and sacrifice… some hearts were never meant to fly free.

Chapter 1
The parapet looks even more lethal then he remembers.
Bodhi Durran stands at the edge of the courtyard. Back straight, jaw locked, looking every part like his older cousin. Staring at the parapet like it’s just another day, just another obstacle. Like his heart isn’t clawing it’s way up his throat while hundreds of 20 year old get ready to walk towards their death.
He has done this once before, stand back while he watches others walk it. Pretending not to care if they fell to their death. Pretending he was the one who didn’t flinch once the screams started. Acting like the lethal picture everyone expected him to be.
Yet this time is different. Last year he was one of them, walking the slippery stones into the rider’s quadrant. Praying he would make it to the other side, hopping that his friends made it through their first years. The ones slipping off of the stones being familiar faces. Names he learned while climbing the stairs.
Now he wears black. A marked one. Rebellion. Loyalty, Pain and Blood. A symbol and a weapon.
He tries to stand like Xaden does, glancing over his cousin -who looks everything the unapproachable rider that he is- shoulders squared, arms loose, expression unreadable. But it’s harder then it should be. Because every sound -the wind against the rock, the sound of distress on the other side, the scream of a rider learning a family member passes- pulls at a crack inside of him that never quite closed.
“Focus.” Xaden’s voice slices through his thoughts, quiet and hard. “You’re twitching.”
Bodhi stiffens.
“Yes, sir.”
Instantly realizing the mistake he made, the quick and quiet response to the order. He doesn’t look at his cousin, even though he feels his eyes locked onto him, watching his every move. Xaden looks at him like he wants to say more, something brutal or biting, but decides against it. Instead the shadow wielder turns back towards the roll of candidates in his hand, going over the names one more time before walking up to the parapet.
Bodhi exhales slowly and let the wind sting his face. The brutal cold grounding him, as pain always does.
But this is what he is good at. Standing still, pretending he is a solid wall of rock. Perfectly blending into Xaden’s shadow. As is expected of him.
//
Too many people are dying.
By the time the 5th one falls, Bodhi starts to count them. Not aloud, never aloud. Just in the back of his mind- one sharp tick, a tiny flinch- for every scream that ends to abruptly, for every cry of help that disappears into the depths underneath the parapet.
The wind has picked up since sunrise. Howling through the cliffs around Basgiath. The arch at the end of the parapet is wet. Maybe because of the rain that has been pouring down around them, making the stones even more lethal then normally, maybe by blood. It was hard to tell from the point where Bodhi was leaning up against a tree. Watching every single participate cross into the rider’s quadrant.
A girl slips halfway ‘cross. She doesn’t scream, doesn’t even call for help. But Bodhi sees her eyes grow wide as realization hits her, right before she falls down into oblivion. Disappearing from sight. Just another name on the roll tomorrow.
“Seven.” Bodhi murmurs under his breath.
“What’s that?” Garrick’s voice is easy as the older boy walks over, leaning up against the tree besides Bodhi. He offers him a smile that’s to casual for Bodhi’s liking. To easy for a day filled with death. “You say something?”
Bodhi shakes his head, looking back at the parapet as another person steps off and celebrates their little victory. “Nothing.”
“Cheer up.” Garrick says, nudging him lightly with his elbow. “They’re holding up better then last year. Only a few so far.”
Only.
Bodhi nods, not saying another word as he stands up a little straighter. He watches as another student steps onto the parapet- nervous but steady- and pretends like he doesn’t feel sick to the stomach. Çause it’s not okay, and certainly not better then last year.
The storm is picking up, already taking more lives then necessary.
Garrick doesn’t know, couldn’t know, of the way Bodhi’s heart has been pounding against the back of his ribs since dawn. That every time someone falls Bodhi doesn’t think Coward, he thinks that could have been me.
Still could, once he stops pretending he could be someone useful.
//
The last student steps off of the parapet.
There is a beat of stillness, a second where even the wind seems to be holding it’s breath. Like the entire quadrant seems to exhale as the last student makes it alive. It’s not long before the laughter, hushed whispers and silent celebrating comes rushing in again. The courtyard filled with first years, students who are still hopeful and buzzing with energy. Not knowing of the hell they just entered.
Bodhi straightens as Xaden steps off of the parapet, scroll of student names in hand. The scroll is sealed, damp from the onslaught of rain and streaked with the blood of a student desperate for help.
He hands it to leadership without ceremony, eyes scanning the courtyard before falling onto Bodhi. Right where he left him behind at the start of the day.
“Walk.” Xaden mutters as he passes, just loud enough for Bodhi to hear. Leaving no room for objection. Bodhi doesn’t blink, doesn’t even question his cousin. Just squares his shoulders, making sure his expression is emotionless, and follows him into a silent alcove.
Xaden’s shadows easily form a wall around them, hiding them from prying eyes.
“We got word from Montserrat.” He mutters, keeping his voice just low enough for Bodhi to hear.
Bodhi stiffens. “Something wrong?”
“Lewellen reached out- says someone up there is getting ready to trade names for clemency. Could be gossip, could be desperation. I don’t care, I want it checked out before information ends up in the wrong hands.”
Bodhi’s pulse kicks harder as he keeps his eyes locked onto Xaden. “You want names?”
“I want confirmation. Quietly. Look for anyone with roots up north who suddenly wants reassignment, pull whatever you need. Take Cuir and check it out, whatever you need to do.”
Upon the mention of his dragon, a displeased grumble echos through Bodhi’s mind. “Understood.” Bodhi mutters, voice tight as he locks out Cuir.
Xaden nods, giving his cousin a one over before continuing. “While you’re at it- keep an eye on Tovern. He has been sniffing around, asking the wrong questions. Making it more then clear he sees us as rot instead of blood.”
Bodhi’s jaw locks, heart starting to pound even harder against his ribs. “You want him silenced?” he asks, hoping his voice sounds steadier then he feels.
“I want him watched. Closely. If he is just curious, we make sure he gets distracted. If he is a problem, we make sure his voice doesn’t carry.”
Xaden glances past Bodhi, the shadows around them falling away as he looks over the courtyard.
“You hear anything, you come to me. No one else.”
“Copy.”
Xaden nods once- a grim, silent command- as his gaze falls back on Bodhi, eye narrowing slightly.
“And don’t even think about having Garrick cover for you, I don’t care how little sleep you’ve had. Keep your guard up.”
The words hit harder then they should have. Not because of the tone, but because of the absence of anything personal. It’s just orders now, ever since Bodhi joined the quadrant. Cousins or not.
Bodhi’s jaw clenches, hands clenched in fists besides him as he stares at the older boy. “Understood.”
Xaden pauses for half a second longer then necessary. Almost like he can see the pain and exhaustion in Bodhi’s eyes, but decides not to call it out. He sighs, eyes turning sympathetic as he watches his cousin, and Bodhi hates it.
“Loosen up.” Xaden mutters softly, eyes already locked on a point behind Bodhi once again. “You’re wound tighter then a crossbow.”
“I’m fine.”
“You look like you’re about to shatter.”
“I said I’m fine.”
Xaden sighs but doesn’t push, never pushes. Just gives orders and trusts Bodhi to follow them. He always does, that’s the problem. Being trusted and looked upon mens you can’t break, not where anyone can see at least.
Xaden gives him one more lookover before walking away. Going back to whatever leadership business he has to do before squads get called.
Bodhi stays rooted for a second longer, almost like he’s forgotten how to move. He exhales slowly, tries to square his shoulders. Tries to remember what pulling himself together is even supposed to feel like.
That’s when he hears it.
A laugh. Bright, full embodied, effortless. A laugh that sounds to warm. It echoes to cleanly across the courtyard, to easy. Cutting right through the static in his head, like sunlight cracking through rain clouds.
Bodhi turns without meaning to, instantly searching for that source of warmth. Across the courtyard, against the barracks, stand a cluster of first years huddled together. Their clothing damp, the slight tremor in their bodies indicating they are still shaking off the adrenaline of survival.
One of them says something to loud, eyes alight with mischievous. The others groan, but there is no real annoyance within the group.
Bodhi’s breath stutters as his eyes fall upon the boy. He is laughing like he doesn’t know what kind of place this is.
Head tilted back slightly, brown curls that glow underneath the sun plastered against his temple from the rain, eyes alight like he is glad to be alive. There is mud on his uniform, and a bruise forming on his collarbone, but he looks like a fire that has yet to be extinguished.
Radiant. That’s the word that comes to mind. Uninvited, unwanted, sharp against the turmoil of emotions.
Bodhi hates it. Hates how it lodges in his chest like a dull knife.
He shouldn’t be looking. Shouldn’t be noticing how the boy’s smile curves mid-laugh, or how his hands flick towards his newly made friends as he talks. Warm, present and open in a way Bodhi can’t remember ever being.
He turns away harshly. Ignoring the tangled feeling in his chest.
Cause this place eats joy. This place kills and brings pain everywhere you walk. Everyone knows that.
So how the hell is he still glowing in this absolute wreckage?

that was chapter 1! Let me know what you think, I have had this idea for ages and I'm so happy to finally write it all down.
AN: In this fic we follow Azris and their children as they learn that the blood rite took on of their sons. Based off of an idea I onfe saw someone write here on tumblr. Can't remember who it was, if yoj do please let me know!
TW: Childloss, grieve, angst, fluff, comfort, de4th (if I forgot any lemme know)
"Princess please, we are already running late just work along." Azriel chuckles at the sound of his mate's desperate voice echoing from the other room.
He is quick to fasten his fighting leathers as he walks over to the other room, just in time to see his youngest angrily staring at her pa, her lips pursed together in stubbornness. "I don't wanna wear my dress." She states again.
"I wanna wear the leathers Sam got me." She says, pointing at her little mannequin standing in the corner of the room. It adorning some gorgeous fighting leathers her oldest brother had gifted her for her birthday.
Even though both Eris and Azriel had told their oldest multiple times that she was way to young to receive them. "Angel.. we're going to a party, you gotta look pretty." Azriel states, smiling as both she and Eris turned towards him.
"But you are wearing them as well!" She protests, crossing her arms. Eris tilts his head, raising an eyebrow at his mate as if to say /she got you there, what you gonna do about it/
Azriel hums, chuckling as he narrows his eyes at his fireling. /you're her pa, make the decision/
Eris grunts, glancing back at the leathers with a pained expression. Much preferring to doll his little girl up over the rough looks the Illyrian clothing gave her.
"Please papa, I wanna look like my brothers." Eowyn pouts, batting her eyelashes innocently. Obviously having chosen that pleading might work better then her previous tantrum.
"Fine. Fine- but.. I am gonna do your hair." Eris eventually states, relenting as he gets up to put the dress away. His little girl grinning victoriously. "You're gonna be a pain in our ass when you grow older." Azriel says with a laugh, ruffling her hair before heading down to grab their jackets.
It didn't take long for his mate to walk down the stairs, glancing pitifully at the young girl running past him. Fighting leathers adorning her little body and a pink bow standing proudly in her ponytail.
"Doesn't she look absolutely viscous." The shadowsinger says with a chuckle, helping Eowyn put on her jacket. "Just as fierce as you, right dad?" She asks happily, making Eris grumble. "I still prefer the dress." He mutters, though there was a lightness to his voice. Wearing pure adoration for his little warrior.
Eris adjusted his coat, his fire-bright hair catching the last rays of sunshine streaming through their entryway. "He is gonna be insufferable, you know." Azriel murmured, thought a hint of pride easily coated his tone. "Walking into the bar tonight, knowing he bested the others."
Eris laughs, shaking his head as he glances down at Eowyn. "His brothers are not gonna hear the end of it, I'm sure he'll pick a fight every second he can."
Azriel laughs softly, though his shadows betrayed his actual emotions. Twining restlessly around the shadowsinger's shoulders and hands. "He earned it." He says softly, eyes taking on a faraway look as he picked up his daughter.
"He always struggled proving himself, the camps have always been rougher on him then they had on Sam and Azul." He says, glancing up at Eris.
The High Lord of Autumn smiles softly, tilting his head as he takes in his mate. "He's gonna be fine, Az. He is strong, so extremely strong." He says, nudging his shadowsinger. "Just you wait. He'll be waiting for us with the biggest grin when we get there, ready to come home and tell us all about it."
A knock on the door was quick to put their conversation to an end, Azriel's shadows excitingly snapping towards it. "Must be Sam." He says softly, knowing his eldest said he might stop by first and head to Windhaven with the three of them.
He gently placed down Eowyn, the girl instantly rushing off to grab her wooden practice sword while Azriel opened the door.
But it wasn't Sam.
Rhysand stood on their door steps, eyes heavy with sorrow as he took in his brother before glancing at Eris behind him. He swallowed thickly, watching the mates in front of him as he tried finding the right words.
Azriel was the first to catch on, his heart stopping and all colour draining from his face. "No." He chokes out, the word a desperate plea falling from his lips.
"Azriel.. Eris- I'm so so sorry." Rhysand mutters, stepping forward cautiously.
Eris froze, his usual fierce demeanor crashing within a second. "What- what are you saying?" He croaks, his voice unsteady and raw as his eyes fixed on the Lord of Night.
"He didn't make it." Rhysand says softly, his eyes slowly filling with tears. "Theon fell, Eris.. I'm sorry he- the others boys..."
Azriel didn't hear the rest, his shadows exploding from his shadows and filling the room in unrestrained chaos. His knees buckled, and Eris was quick to catch him and keeping him from collapsing completely.
"No.... no no no no no." Azriel clutched onto Eris' arms, holding on tightly in fear of losing his mate as well. "No.. he's too strong.. he would never- he can't be.." his words broke out into sobs..cries of anguish filling the hallway.
"Dad?" Eowyn's small voice came through the shadows, watching her fathers uncertainly. She knew something was wrong but was not yet being able to understand the situation.
Eris shook his head, his body trembling as he reaches out to pull his little girl close. Needing to hold her, needing to know she was still there. "You're lying." He says, his voice a broken plea as he looks up at Rhysand. His eyes hollow as he denied the truth. "He can't be gone.. not Theon.. he is too strong." He chokes out.
Rhysand smiles brokingly, his own tears of sorrow slowly running down his cheeks at the sight of them. "I'm sorry Eris, I wouldn't wish this upon anybody.. Especially Theon." He mutters.
"He was always so kind, his heart always to big... he fought hard till the end."
Eris let out a cry of pure anguish, letting go of Eowyn and shoving past Azriel. Slamming his fists onto the cabinet as flames licked up his spine and arms. The wood instantly burning and turning to a pile of ash.
Eowyn flinched, her lip trembling as she watched her dad's, soft sobs soon leaving her lips as she picked up the emotions around the room.
"No... no not Theon- not my boy.." Eris chokes out, sinking down the wall as sobs wrecked his body.
Azriel crawled to him, wrapping his arms around his mate while his tears continued to fall freely. He moved to pulll Eowyn up between them, the girl clinging tightly to her dads.
The three clung to one another on the floor, the grief a thickening wave threatening to drown them.
The house was often filled with their children's laughter. Their voices echoing through the halls. Whether happy or bickering. Yet in that very momemt their normally warm house fell silent.
It suddenly being too big for just the lot of them.
Eris was the first to pull himself slightly together, still clinging to Azriel and Eowyn as he lifted his head to Rhysand.
"Where are my boys?" He asks, his voice coming oit rough and broken. "Cassian is currently talking to them.. they'll be here shortly." The High Lord responds, glancing down at his brother with pure sorrow.
Azriel let out another heartbreaking sob as he held tightly onto his daughter, his wings drooping lifelessly behind him at the thought of their boys hearing the news.
"Azriel, I'm here for you, let me know if I can help." Rhysand says softly, glancing over the three of them one more time before winnowing away.
The shadowsinger broke once more, placing multiple kisses upon Eowyn's head as he sobbed. His heart aching painfully every time he tried to remember his son's laughter. His playfull demeanor and loyal heart.
It wasn't long before Sam and Azul walked into the hallway, the latter looking paler then normal. Eyes blood red and hands trembling. "Oh my boy." Azriel whispers, getting up and pulling his son into a tihht wmbrace.
"It's okay.. it's okay.." he whispers, voice failing him as the boy broke into sobs, holding tightly onto his father.
Sam was quick to reach for Eowyn, picking the girl up and holding her close. "I'll make us some tea." He says softly, moving to the kitchen. "Sam.." Eris muttere, watching his oldest son. "It's okay to grieve." He says softly.
Same hesitated for oa flicker of a second before shaking his head. "It's alright, another time." He says, masking every emotion to his best ability before fully walking into the kitchen.
----------------
Azriel pressed a gentle kiss to the top of Azul's fire red head once the boy calmed down a tad, his eyes filled with sorrow.
"Come on, let's go upstairs." He mutters, gently guiding him up the stairs before reaching for Eris hand. The male in question having zoned out, staring at the floor as tears slowly ran down his cheeks.
"Come on, my love.. it's okay." Azriel whispers brokingly, leading both up the stairs and into their bedroom.
Their bed had always been overly large. Which had been more then efficient when they first moved in together, the bed easily fitting both Azriel's shadows and Eris' huge collection of pillows.
And then the kids came- one for one curling up alongside them when they grew up, the bed having felt empty once their boys left for Windhaven. The sheets cold, and bed way to big.
But now, 10 years later- it was perfect once again. The perfect size for the lot of them to hold one another through the grief. Azriel silently moved to the bed, taking off his shoes before laying down in the middle.
"Come 'ere." He whispers, voice cracking once more as he opened his arms for both Eris and Azul. The young bat was quick to crawl into bed with his father, his face pale and lip quivering as he curled up besides him.
Eris watches them for a moment, choking on a sob before he sat down besides Azriel, leaning up against the headboard. The shadowsinger smiles softly, placing a kiss atop Eris' head. "It's okay to cry." he whispers, knowing his mate still struggled with it, no matter the situation.
The shadows were quick to rush forward at the sound of ceramic breaking, a slam soundig soon after making Azriel flinch. He was about to get up and head dowstairs to check upon his oldest, but footsteps were soon heading up the stairs.
"Oh Sam.." Eris whispers once the oldest walked inside, tears slowly running down his cheeks and wings dragging lowly over the ground. All fight having left his body. "I dropped the tea.." he says with a small smile, trying to hold himself together.
"It's alright.. come 'ere you two." The High Lord of Autumn whispers softly. Eowyn was quick to rush over, holding tightly onto her stuffed teddy bear as she crawled in between Azriel and Eris.
Sam hesitated for a flicker of moment, a shaky breath leaving his lips before pushing his emotions back in control. A quick wipe of his tears before he crawled into bed along with the others.
Eris hums, holding his family closed before glancing at the hearth. A single thought being enough for the fire to start, the soft orange glow instant lighting up the room. Yet it did nothing against the darkness the grief brought along with it.
"Is Theon really gone?" Eowyn whispers, her lip trembling as she glances upon her fathers. Azriel looks down at his little girl, his chest constricting as he pulled her closer. His shadows instantly wrapped around her, softly brushing iver her arms as if to comfort the 8 year old.
"Yes my angel.." He eventually whispers, his voice rough with emotion. "He's really gone." He mutters, the words alone causing more tears to roll down his cheeks.
Azul moved next, hesitating before curling up against Azriel, reaching over to gently rub Eowyn's back. For a couple of minutes the room was filled with silence, aside the soft sobs or whimpers leaving one of them every now and then. Everyone stuck in their own thoughts and memories.
"I-I told him not to go... begged him even." Azul crumpled, brows furrowed together as he talked. "But he was stubborn, said it was his time to prove himself.. to show you that he could be like you, dad." He finishes, tears racing down his cheeks.
Azriel's breath hitched at his words, his grip on Eowyn instantly tightening. Besides him Eris sat up straighter against the headboard, his sharp intake of breath barely audible above the fire. Yet his amber eyes flicked towards Sam. His oldest not having said a word as he stared at the fire the whole time. Knuckles clenched tightly as guilt and anger raced through his eyes.
"He didn't have to prove anything." Sam says, still not moving his gaze away from the crackling hearth. "He wasn't ready and I didn't do a fucking thing. I should have made him stay, should have stopped him."
Eris frowns, wrapping an arm around his son's shoulders and gently rubbing his thumb along his arm. "This isn't your fault." He tells him gently, his voice steady despite the grief weighting on his shoulders. "Theon wanted to participate.. trained so hard for it." He says softly.
Sam flinched, jerking away as his face shifted to one of anger and guilt. The first true emotions shown since he stepped into the bedroom. "He was so young! He didn't know the right choice, pa." He bites out, voice breaking. "I am the oldest, it is my /job/ to protect him. And I failed!"
"Sam.." Azriels says gently, his voice shaky as he reached over for his oldest. "It's okay..." he adds gently. Eris smiles, slowly reaching over again and pulling Sam tightly up against him. The dam broke, and Sam's shoulders shook as sobs racked his body.
Eowyn whimpers, lip trembling as she hesitantly reaches over, holding out her teddy bear. "Mr. Pickles wants to help.." she whispers. Azriel places a soft kiss to the top of her head, gently squezing Azul's shoulder.
Eris glances over at his mate, the two sharing a look of pure understanding and agonizing heartbreak. They lost a piece of themselves that day, and they had no idea how to move forward just yet.
"Will we forget him?" Eowyn asks eventually, looking up through bloodred eyes. Azul let out another small sob at her words, holding tighter onto his father.
"Never." Eris responds easily, of this he was sure. This he could promise them. "We still have each other. And we'll carry him with us- always." He says softly, smiling as he gentle brushed the tears from Eowyn's cheeks.
Azul sniffled, lifting his head and looking up at Azriel. "You reckon he was scared?" He asks. The male hesitated, his heart twisting painfully at the thought of his son spending his last seconds in terror.
"I think he was very brave." He forces himself to reply, gently running his hand through Azul's hair. "Braver then he had to be.. and I think he gave his everything till the very last second."
Eris nods, leaning his head against Azriel's shoulder as he held his family close. "The rite will always take, will never stop taking those we love.." he mutters, glancing at Sam who was still staring at the fire. His face set in stone, though tears were slowly rolling down his cheeks.
Azriel nods slowly, watching his shadows swirl around his family. Softly brushing along arms as if trying to bring some comfort as well.
Sam scoffs, still staring at the fire as anger raged through his eyes. "I'll make sure no one else will get through this.. not like him.. no one deserves to die over a single game of who has the biggest dick." He spats angrily, clenching his fists tighter to hide the tremor in them.
Eris reaches over, placing a gentle hand atop Sam's. Feeling his son tense up even more at the touch. "You don't have to go through this alone, Sammy." He whispers. "None of us do."
Sam swallows thickly, continuing to stare at the fire as more tears slowly started rolling down his cheeks, quickly grabbing onto his pa's hand tightly.
"Is Theon with the Mother now?" Eowyn whispers, raising her tear streaked face. Azriel glanced over, meeting Eris' gaze. Their shared pain a silent understanding hanging between them. The shadowinger took a deep breath, holding his mate's gaze a second longer before turning to his daughter.
"Yes." He says softly. "He is with the Mother.. looking down at us." He adds, glancing up with a smile. "Protecting us." He whispers, reaching over to hold Azul's hand. "He's closer by then you might think.." he adds, pointing at the boy's heart. "In here."
Azul smiles softly, sniffing before snuggling back up against his dad. The family stayed like that, tangled together in a web of grief and great loss. The loss of Theon was mever gonna be easy. But together they would push through it, step by step.
Eris reached for Azriel's free hand, their fingers interteining as they held their family tightly. Sam's sobs finally filling the space as well. And it was that moment, that they began the long, painful journey to healing.
AN: I once saw someone talking about a fanfic idea. Azris losing their son during the Blood Rite.. I can't remember who said it but it stuck with me so.. here it is (I'm sorry in advance)
TW: Angst, Childloss, Grief, comfort
------------------
"Princess please, we are already running late just work along." Azriel chuckles at the sound of his mate's desperate voice echoing from the other room.
