Obidome (sash ornament) types, handy reference by Nadeshico Rin :D
Obidome buckles appeared in latter half of Edo era, as obi kept widenning and so needed additional support to keep them from unravelling. At that time, obijime (= string part) and obidome (=buckle part) weren’t separated as they are today, functionning much like what Westerners would call a belt.
Pachin shiki (パチン式 - clip type) : was fashionable during Bunka-Bunsei eras (=1804-30).
Hikkake shiki (引っ掛け式 - hook type) : an easier version to produced and tie than pachin style, was fashionable during late Meiji to early Showa eras (=around 1880-1930).
Himo tôshi shiki (紐通し式 - stringing type) : what people think about when you say obidome nowadays, appeared during Showa era.
Surprinsingly, the antique buckle version look pretty modern to my eyes. Their styles could easily be mimicked with a modern belt. The brooch one (=which you slide across a sanbuhimo obijime) is in fact so recent!
