I rewatched Korra up till the end of S2 and I think I remember why I didn't like Legend of Korra too much. As much as I like Korra as a character and really love the backstory of Raava and Avatar Wan, I think the story of Legend of Korra reminds me too much of the trauma of modernity/coloniality - the rupture and erasures of knowledge from our history and our indigenous traditions (ie in Avatar world: our connection to our past lives).
I get that the big lesson in S2 was to ensure that we chart our own journeys and be authentically ourselves as that is where our unique light shines brightest. But the severance with the line of Avatars (and therefore the knowledge and experience of all of them) that have existed 10,000 years feels just as catastrophic as 10,000 years of darkness to me. How do you navigate the present and guide your steps into the future without the wisdoms and learning from the mistakes of your history and your past?
I hope Avatar: Seven Havens and Paavi's storyline will explore what it means to reconnect with the avatar's past lives and use our own lights and creativities to create more just and balanced futures.
(Also maybe LoK S3 and 4 will give more insight but I totally forgot what the seasons were about)
