Time for me to complain about my experiences with a penis and a vagina in the intersex community again!! This is gonna be long.
Okay, so I noticed people have started to drop the "intersex people can't have both." thing, because it's unclear and pretty much just wrong. This is good that people have stopped that! However, though, I've noticed people picking up some new phrases that are also kinda icky and unclear. Let me explain why I think these new phrases are also icky, and why I personally think they're intersexist.
"Intersex people can't have both fully functioning parts."
In this phrase, 'parts' is really fucking vague. You'll see me complain about this even more later. If by 'parts' you mean penis and vagina, you're just... wrong. And the use of 'fully functioning' kinda irks me too, to be honest. Would you describe my genitalia as not 'fully functioning' just because my penis is micro, and I have vaginal hypoplasia? Is that what dictates the 'not fully functioning' part, or are you referring to infertility? My genitalia is fully functioning for MY purposes, because I don't WANT to get pregnant or get anyone pregnant, so I like being infertile. My genitalia is fully functioning for MY purposes, because I don't even want vaginal penetration, and I can always use a strap since my foreskin merged to my labia minora, thus binding it downwards. Don't force your idea of how genitalia should fully function on me.
"Intersex people can't have both working external parts."
Again, the use of 'parts'. It's really fucking vague. Just tell us exactly what you think intersex people can't have already!! And this time, they used the word 'working'. I have the same complaints as last time, because the word 'working' makes me feel like my genitalia is supposed to work in a perisex-typical way. My genitalia DOES work, actually, in my intersex way.
"Intersex people can't have both [short descriptor that's not very specific] parts."
The use of 'parts' is vague, blah blah blah. There are so many instances of people just throwing some bullshit down without really thinking about it. People love having easy and quick ways to exclude intersex people from their own community I guess.
"Intersex people can't have both sets of fully functioning genitalia."
This one doesn't use 'parts', thankfully. But, again, there's the use of 'fully functioning,' which implies that intersex people's parts aren't fully functioning. I'm okay if you personally describe your genitalia as not fully functioning, but I for one do not.
In summary, I wish people would stop trying to look for a short quick phrase to use to use when dictating what intersex people cannot be. It excludes a lot of us when you're not SUPER specific! Yes, there is a SUPER specific idea of what intersex people cannot be, and when you aren't SUPER specific about it, you are GOING to exclude a lot of us!! Intersex people are so diverse, you can't just expect a short little phrase to describe what we aren't.
Even I don't have a good descriptor for what intersex people aren't!! I can't even tell you with full certainty that there are no people out there who are able to both be impregnated and impregnate, because I've heard stories from many people who claim to know someone who can both be impregnated and impregnate others. Just because they're not documented doesn't mean they don't exist. They're probably not documented for a reason, because they fear being treated like lab rats.
