Movie Night

Rebel Without a Cause is without a doubt a movie that depicts a strong sense of teenage rebellion. The actions that they take themselves during the movie such as driving off cliffs, knife fighting, and like the whole final act of the story may seem like they’re things that us teenagers wouldn’t actually do in this day and age. However the problems that these teenagers face leading to this behavior can be directly related to us. As a teenager myself I can see many of these problems myself such as parental issues, drinking, and smoking in my daily life. These problems were made in order to relate to their audience which in fact is teenagers in that time period of which the movie was made. The movie also depicted a certain group of people that stereo-typically is known as the “cool kids”, which creates a relation of that group to real life with the teenagers at that time. These factors purpose was to show that a teen in fact has a sort of rebellious side to them, that this is how teenagers really are.

The second movie that my group and I watched was “ A Clockwork Orange”. The movie is about a rebellious high school teenager who goes out every evening with his gang to go and assault random people and rape women. As graphic this movie was compared to Rebel Without a Cause it still carries several similarities to it. The illegal violence that occurs even though it’s on a more graphic level, strides from the same problems that the teenagers have from rebel without a cause. The movie also uses the parents as a huge problem for the main protagonist like in Rebel Without a Cause. The speaker for this movie was evidently Alex(the main character) as he narrates his whole story throughout the movie. The audience like Rebel Without a Cause is teenagers. The purpose I believe is to show the rebellious nature of teenagers and what extent they may be able to go to because of the problems that they face.

the original viral Youtube video

Originality may seem quite non apparent in today’s culture as so much of what we have today is remixed and sampled off of, it’s almost as if nothing is ever original. When I was younger the website Youtube was created and now it is the second most popular website on the internet. It was merely created for a group of friends to share videos to each other. What is original isn’t the website itself however, at the time there were still few websites that contained a number amount of videos similar to youtube. But a youtuber named “nigahiga” created a video called “how to be ninja” in 2007″ and it was known as the first viral comedy video on youtube. After this video was made along with several other viral videos by nigahiga, It created a competition for who would be the most popular content creator on youtube that is still going on today. Nigahiga’s “how to be ninja” is the most original form of viral comedy apparent on youtube. Several youtuber’s have taken samples of comedy from it over time and even nigahiga himself has done a remake of it called “how to be ninja 2″. The video is still on youtube and I put the link if you care to watch.

In these two videos it shows the author, Anne Fadiman is talking about how she wrote the book and why she wrote it when she did and the complexity of it. After watching this it gives me a better idea of who the narrator is and how she really fits into this

In this it provides more info that I never got in the book about the role of Hmong refugee families in general when they moved to america and the roles of certain people which I found interesting because the problem with healthcare was super common and not just rare with Lias family, there were a lot of people who did not want to assimilate into Americas culture

Throughout the book I never really understood the basis of Shamans or even what a Shaman was really, through this I actually kind of understand how important it really is to these people and that it’s not just a job but a role in their society that is beneficial to the way they live

In this site, it explains the war that took place before immigrant refugees started to move to america, I know that in the book it explains some of the aspects that were apparent in the vietnam war but this site really sums it up and makes it easier to understand the backstory of the book in my opinion

In the link above I shared another story of a hmong woman who talks about her experience in a refugee camp as a child and how she moved to america. I found it very interesting as this reading wasn’t told from an outsider who basically just interviewed the people that went through it but it was told from the actual person who experienced these life changing events herself.

I’ve never known a person who has had epilepsy before so I didn’t really understand it before I watched this video but after I watched it it gave me a greater understanding of what Lia was going through doing all of her seizures and how random they occurred when they did

I’ve reached chapter 16 of The Spirit Catches You and You Fall down, and it is announced that Lia Lee is probably going to die with in a few weeks, after all that has happened in the book it’s hard knowing that after all that hard that not only the parents worked through but also the many doctors and nurses who treated her really did it for nothing and that it was a false cause.

After reading about 1/3 of my book i’m almost completely sucked in, the story of Lia and how she’s not only a victim of epilepsy but of the fact that her parents culture and the culture of america is completely different from one another and it’s uncertain what her fate is. As of now she has been taken away from her parents because of the extra care she needs and how the parents didn’t follow the doctors order accordingly

As my latest post dealt with the cultural side of this book, I’d like to talk about the actual story of this book for once, after reading through the chapters Its really eye opening seeing what this family had to go through and seeing actually what the doctors themselves so far have had to go through just to take care of this one child. What makes it so interesting so far is the conflict of religion and medicine and who determines what for the child’s life.

After a couple more chapters apart from the actual story I’ve been very interested in the various Hmong related beliefs that are explained throughout the text. I notice that after every chapter about the main characters the book focuses on the history and context and exposition of the Hmong and also culture, the artwork presented in this post is of a Hmong shaman who has been referenced a ton so far

Reading #1 The Lee Family

Through the first two chapters of this book I can already tell that this is going to be interesting through the fact of the culture collision of the Lees(Hmong) and the Americans. It’s interesting as it is stating several different of the Hmong beliefs on health and on how different it is from our beliefs especially on the rules referring to medicine and its usage to heal.

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down

I was searching for a book when a friend recommended this book to me as he said that it would be a story I’d be interested in. He told me that I would be of interest to it because it dealt with different cultures mixing in together and it would be good for me as I love the idea of diversity good or bad. He also told me that the story was in a way depressing and very real which was just simply something I was looking for in a book.

Donald Trump(our president), posted this on twitter on January 24th, 2018. The language used in this tweet creates two different ways to corrupt thought, his first point is that “our economy is booming” which is implying that the United States’ has reached great economic growth nationwide and that jobs are secure to all the citizens in the united states. He is manipulating the way people think by putting random facts on twitter without evidence. And the people who believe this’ thoughts are being changed and now think that the economy is booming and is alive and well to the point of major economic growth.

A Modest Proposal

A modest proposal by Jonathan Smith is seen as political when he argues that the poor shouldn’t be withheld by the amount of power that the government contains and that they should have just as much power over the state. The state overrides the citizens power through “eating” away their rights and freedom which links to how he was talking about people eating babies as it is seen as immoral. This can be shown through example by the Chinese apple factory workers who tried committing suicide by jumping off the roof of their workplace because of the amount of labor that they have to go through just to make a living by the government.
