               “ Do you think that people would be kinder to the environment if they could hear it’s cries? ” The question leaves petal pink lips with a soft hum, kicking the piece of trash that was closest to her. Thin brows draw together, worry lines between them before soft, brown hues towards the other. “ You’ll help me right? ”

for all the years she’s spent with pamela and harley, it’s almost as if their kids are her own. in her heart, there’s no difference between them and elena. she loves them all. “sweetheart, ‘course i’ll help.” her lips lift in a soft smile as she bends over to pick up the stray bottle, lobbing it easily into the recycling bin a couple feet away. “what d’you need me to do?”

selina was far nicer to him than florian had expected, if he was being completely honest. for whatever reason, he had assumed she would hate him – he hadn’t met her kid yet, too busy trying to wrap his head around everyone else, but that probably had something to do with it – but florian was the sort to assume everyone hated him. selina, who had grown to be softer towards him, should have been no different.

“save yourself the trouble.” he replied, mouth around his cigarette filter, taking in some sort of comforting breath. “what are you doing up here?”

there’s a pang of... something ricocheting around her heart at the callous way florian seems to hold his own fate. guilt? sympathy? kinship? she shakes her head roughly. it’s not important right now, what that feeling is. all that matters is getting through to him.

“i’m always here. most days, anyway. i like the quiet.” warm brown eyes are fixed on the boy, on the tension in his shoulders like he hasn’t gotten to breathe properly in years. so much for a boy so young to carry, all by himself. “guess we must’a just missed each other up here in the past.” she speaks lightly, trying to help him feel more at ease with the casual conversation. no use scaring him off by going into the emotional deep-end right away.

florian’s legs dangled dangerously over the edge of the building as he shivered. it was cold, but he was alone, and that was all that mattered. it wasn’t the first time he’d been up here. the curly haired man didn’t hear the older woman come up the stairwell behind him, but he was just relieved it wasn’t family.

it took him too long to reply, focusing far too much on the cigarette between his fingers. “it’d be a hell of a fall.”

she pads over to him, throwing her legs over the edge to mirror his as she takes a seat. up here the rest of the world fades away. selina doesn’t have to think about the fact that he’s bruce’s, that he’s a sign he moved on long before she expected him to. 

“yeah, and i won’t be able to catch you without falling over m’self, so — save us both the anxiety, okay?”

it was unsettling, having her usual privacy perched on one of paragon’s highest rooftops invaded. and even more so, once she realized it was bruce’s child. adella’s twin. granted, she’d had much fewer opportunities to butt heads with him, since he wasn’t taking any of her classes.

“heya, kid.” christ. she was only ever awkward with the two of ‘em. “watching over the city like your pops?”

“WHY ARE WE SUCH SLAVES TO AESTHETICS,” Elena questions, fondness laced in her tone. She always enjoyed her mother’s company, far more than most due to how similar &&. Perhaps due to the fact that Elena had only even had her mother. “Mama, I know where my blind spots are – I just think it’s more fun to get caught every now and then.” The brunette pauses, taking the wallet and opening it up to examine the cash inside, slim digits tapping delicately against the leather.

“THERE’S ENOUGH IN HERE FOR DECENT sushi –There’s this cute place down the street. Not perfect, but it’s cute.” She informs her mother, grinning.

she’d always held herself as a queen, and brought her daughter up every bit the princess she seemed now. everything in their house, their lives.. it was all sharp lines and monochrome, gravitating very much to things that were necessarily beautiful. it’s what made this man’s awful choices seem that much more criminal — if you have the money, why not spend it right?

“fun?” she tilts her head back, a laugh spilling out of her throat as she ruffles her daughter’s hair in endearment. “god, you really are just like me. let’s go then. you lead the way.”

Piper nodded. “Magic? What kind of magic?” She hadn’t done a lot of stuff up against magic before. “I don’t know. But if I got my hands on the phone itself, probably not.” Her technopathy should be able to get past that, right? Make the phone give up its secrets. But she wasn’t sure she wouldn’t be traceable.

“whatever...” she trails off, waving her hands abstractly. guess there’s no way to say it without... straight-up saying it. “whatever zatanna’s got. ya know her?” selina grimaces at the thought of what she might have to do, just to make sure she and elena are really safe here. “i can swipe her phone, yeah, if that helps things.”

Piper was going to need more information like whose phone she was going to be hacking, and potentially access to the phone at least once, but that was a start. “Okay. Old texts and stuff or watching new ones come in too? And did you want calls or… There’s a lot of stuff I can do.”

so matter-of-fact. it’s all just business, she tries to convince herself, even as the guilt has her heart sinking faster by the second. “get me everything you can on that phone. i... don’t know what i’m looking for, not yet.” a flicker of a thought occurs to her, and her face scrunches up in frustration. “magic.. won’t be able to hide anything from your hackin’, right?”

“No one will be able to trace it. Certainly not back to you,” Piper promised. “What exactly am I looking for?”

she hoped the younger girl’s unshakeable certainty was enough for the both of them. truth be told, selina still wasn’t sure she should be seeking this out, but the worry in her heart wouldn’t seize. kept buzzing and keeping her up all night, and that was no good for anyone. “i just wanna bug... someone’s phone. get a look at their texts an’ stuff.”

THE SOUND OF HER HEELS CLICKED OBNOXIOUSLY AGAINST THE SIDEWALK, however as another person passed her, Elena’s fingers easily slipped inside the other’s pocket. Grasping the wallet, which frankly was an awful shade of brown that made an over-dramatic sigh pass her ruby lips.  “Some people have no taste.” Only then does she realize that someone has been behind her, dark hues glance over her shoulder: “You’re not going to rat me out, are you?”

“i know, right?” her lips curl into an unimpressed scowl, as she dangles the same man’s chunky watch from her fingers. “you’d think people would learn what looks good when they’ve got the money for it.”

 it’d been a while since selina had gotten to stretch her legs outside of paragon with her daughter, and the freedom to get up to whatever mischief they could muster without the watchful eyes of paragon pd was a feeling she’d been craving. “rat you out? never, mija. just want you to watch your blind spots a little more.”

“I’m just saying that conveniently offing a few strategic senators in specific, blue-leaning districts would help our cause. we could do it,” she rolls her eyes and lets out a bit of a dramatic sigh with a smirk, “but everyone seems to disagree so I guess I’ll just sit on the idea.”

“...offing them.” she rolls the words around her mouth as she fixes her eyes on lorna. sure, it’s been years since she was in gotham, and even longer since she’d started working with bruce, but somehow the moral code he planted in her heart grows with each passing day. “i love ya, but ‘m just not sure i can do something so... drastic, y’know?”

ash had never been good at staying in one place had he? a part him always too quick too run away, still there was selina. the one person he had to rely on his entire life. the one person he knew he would have for the rest of his life. no matter what kind of trouble he found himself in it never seemed to push her further away.

“just about,” he grins with a shake of her head, not bothering to brush her hand away, before following her through the house. “it’s about bea,” when was it not? surely selina must have been sick of hearing about his love life. “and ava too really… the two of them got in a fight, the details don’t matter, but then me and bea managed to get in a fight twice over it- sel there’s a part of me that thought there might be a chance, but now i’m pretty sure i just need to leave again,”

she was glad her life was mostly drama-free. it meant she could spend any extra brain capacity remembering the tangles and details of asher’s. plopping down on the couch, deft fingers toss a piece of popcorn into her mouth. ( how fitting. )

“isn’t bea the one who stood you up? at the altar?” she shakes her head — her poor boy didn’t deserve that, didn’t deserve to be all cut up by that foolish decision. “what kind of chance are you still looking for, with her?”

“in a manner of speaking, yes.” the girl was feisty, she’d give her that. and hopefully she was as good as she was confident. “i can pay. i just need this to be off the books. no one can know.”

“I appreciate it,” she smirks, “it’d been so long since I really saw him at that point… is it bad I just assumed you were a messy ex?” she chuckled, quickly adding, “I’m glad you’re not. it’s good to meet the people that have his back over here,” she rubs the back of her neck, otherwise seeming relaxed. after all, ava was definitely used to the whole ‘powerful woman’ presence from her mother. she embraced it, and tended to surround herself with those type of women naturally, “and you actually are how I found out about him drinking less, so thanks. i appreciate that, too.

she almost chokes at the thought of ava assuming... she was even remotely involved with asher. the boy was like a son to her — it was unthinkable. still, it shed a lot of light on why she’d reacted that way. possessive. something was up between the two of ‘em. “god. i suppose i should be flattered, what with you thinking i’m young enough to date him.” she shakes her head ruefully. “but yeah. we take care of each other. you served overseas together?”

       it felt natural to want to mimic the cat in her languid-like movements ── the way that dinah stepped that little bit into selina’s personal space, brushing back her long blonde hair, licking lips and raking her eyes up the other woman’s form.

      ❝ like you love me, ❞ she purred, smirking and finally meeting the other’s eyes. ❝ i do have a nice ass. besides, i don’t like having difficulty sitting the day afterwards. that’s just a nuisance. ❞

the smirk pulls at the edges of her lips as she watches dinah mirror her — the cat and the canary, still stuck in their dance. fluidly she steps around the blonde to break the eye contact, fingers tangling through her hair and coming to rest on her shoulders, where she begins to rub out the knots of tension buried deep in muscle.

“love’s a, uh — strong word, don’tcha think?” so many years and still she’s skittish of admitting the way someone can light up a fire inside her. still she’s unwilling to be the first to say it. “guess we’ll have to figure somethin’ else out, then. wouldn’t wanna injure your magnificent ass.”
