Goldberg

May we pity the weary Goldberg,

forced awake all those many nights,

alone, in thin light, at the clavier,

easing his master’s sleepless plight?

And would he had felt it a fair price,

had he known what was to be,

to lose those many hours of sleep

in exchange for immortality?

NOTE: The classic “Goldberg Variations” origin story, on which this verse is based, is considered, by the appropriately knowledgeable, as bogus. However, I think it still a good story.
