Her brow furrowed as the information coming from Jason processed through the robot. Still, she had trouble grasping it. “So...” Speechless, Ava shook her head. “Why should I trust you? If you have this ability then why should I want to see you again? I’m just an experiment, aren’t I.” There was no hurt in her voice. Only a tone that challenged him.

“You are an amazing cook.”

The robot nodded briefly, smoothing the sides of her skirt down against her thick layer of skin. The stain of water had almost evaporated now. Ava led Jason out of the coffee shop and down the busy main street towards the bustling hotel a few blocks away. “This is where I am.” Looking to his face, the woman wondered if he had more on his mind than he expressed. “What do you want to say to me?” she asked candidly. “You look like you have something to say.”

“I can’t trust you.”

“I need you, though.”

“Don’t be fucking rude.”

“Is that my shirt?”

“So, it was you.”

“I need to go.”

“Just stay with me.”

“You can trust me.”

“Alright, I love you.”

“I’m sorry, but no.”

“Will you help me?”

“You’re a terrible cook.”

“Can you shut up!?”

“You love me, right?”

“I really need you.”

“I don’t love you.”

“I’m not doing this.”

“I really need you.”

“You don’t want me.”

“Let me help you.”

“You’re such a bitch.”

“I can’t do this.”

“You think you’re funny?”

“Hey, I said stop!”

“Will you marry me?”

“Wanna go out sometime?”

“I don’t want this.”

“You always this quiet?”

“Are you fucking insane!?”

“I don’t want you.”

“I’m not wearing that.”

“Sorry, were you sleeping?”

“This was never right.”

“You look really tired.”

“I’m out of here.”

“You need to go.”

“I’m alright,” She assured him, despite the expression of alarm Ava now wore across her face. The woman batted her dark eyes for a moment, feeling the haywire sensation subside. Her slender hands returned to the untouched coffee after dabbing away as much water as the fabric of her dress would allow. “I should be going soon,” she spoke, eyeing the temporary stain. “I’m sure you’re quite busy anyway, I won’t keep you. Thank you for the drink, Jason. It was very nice meeting you.”

Ava weighed the man’s words, silently nursing her mug. “Perhaps so. But I don’t think many would be prone to working harmoniously.” That seemed to be a fault of mankind. The air felt tense and the woman hastily changed the subject. “Do you play any sports? You look sort of the athletic type--”  The robot hadn’t registered the small boy running with the plastic cup of water that seemed far too big for his tiny hands. If she’d seen the way he carelessly squeezed the plastic or the way he hurried over to his mother’s table, Ava would have flinched to avoid the tall cup of water toppling into her lap. She jumped from shock, and quite literally. A quick zzzaaap of water meeting wires between the crevasses of her skin jolted through her, but there hadn’t been enough to do any damage. 

The boy’s mother apologized profusely and led her son away as Ava glanced at her lap, hesitating longer than she understood a girl would before dabbing at her dress. She sure almost certain no one had noticed the unusual sound. Why would they?

“They aren’t really that different.” The words that poured out of her mouth came out louder than Ava had intended. She wasn’t quite sure if Jason was done speaking, but his words lit up every circuit in her body, the way she knew humans felt upon evoked emotion. “Machines and man. We aren’t really that different.” The woman eyed her coffee, still unaware of whether this man was someone she could trust. He meant well, Ava was sure of that; but her secret–she knew–could be the end of her, especially in the eyes of a techie reaching for that next advancement. “People don’t realize what they’re toying with, creating human intelligence. Because then…then they’ve created a human.”

“I don’t tell other people...” She spoke, letting a twinge of defensiveness slip into her tone. Ava rose from her spot on the dingy, dirty tile and grabbed the few belongings she carried with her. Belongings gathered along the way. Upon Zach’s invitation, the girl let her straight, stern posture soften into a more relaxed one. It was something she’d learned to do by observance. “I would like that.” As they abandoned the small shack used as temporary residency, Ava glanced over her shoulder to the boy. “You think I’m crazy. But you’re letting me stay. Which means you believe me.” She let a small smile tug at her lips and walked ahead to lead the way. Onto the next temporary home.

A New Soul

Ava’s head tilted ever so slightly. “A night on...the town? Drinking, dancing, dining and letting go of our inhibitions, you mean. Isn’t that what people mean? That’s the correct vernacular.” The robot paused for a moment. “I’m ready to escape. Tell me how.”

“Well I wish you the best of luck.” Ava nodded. “Compatibility is the key to successful romantic human interaction. It’s...very fascinating to me.”

“Men.” Ava chuckled, smirking a bit as the word rolled off her tongue. “Once. I liked him but... Well, for me there’s a reason I don’t mingle. Why haven’t you dated again?”

“I don’t know…” The woman furrowed her brow at Elin’s response. “Girl talk, have you heard of it?” She adjusted her posture to face the other brunette with a smile. “Tell me about your last boyfriend then.”

Engaging in a conversation like this with her friend felt normal. Ava animatedly waved a pen. “I’m interested!”

“I have, yes.” - the Vanir smiled, this was unexpected; she kept silent for a moment whilst seeking her memory for the name of the fellow she had a short relationship with, if it was to be considered such. “Well, into the four of six years I lived in Asgard, I had a casual relationship with a man by the name of Jari. He was funny, clever, though an arrogant elitist. It did not last long.”

“And you haven’t found any boys since then? Boring.” Ava cracked a smile and leaned forward in her seat. “I’m kidding. But I was just curious. Sounds like Jari was a real--what do they say?--tool.”

“You’re judging me. You don’t understand.”

“Fine...as I told you.” Her arm jutted upright and Ava examined a hand in front of her dulled expression. Sometimes, when boredom got the best of her, she couldn’t help but trace her eyes across the pathway of prints that etched along her fingers; a mark of her creator’s detailed mind. 

She sat up, running the same hand through her mess of knotted, dark hair. Ava lifted her gaze to Zach, challenging him to refuse her claim. “I haven’t told anyone else.”

“You’re very observant.” Mikael appeared genuinely impressed with this, smiling again in return to her own.  “I’m a human, yes. My name is Mikael Blomkvist. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Ava.”

It felt as if he ought to shake her hand but of course the  glass wouldn’t have allowed it so he settled on a friendly wave.

“More observant than the average human, yes.” The robot’s dark eyes took in the man’s answer and she tested his name on her tongue. “Mikael.” 

“Are you here to test me, Mikael? Is this for your job?”
