Tyler had been training for the summer for almost six months.
At twenty-three, he already possessed the body most men at his gym were still trying to build: broad shoulders, thick thighs, muscular arms, and a narrow waist beneath a white ribbed tank top. His brown curls fell casually over his forehead, and he wore large white headphones even when no music was playing because, according to his boyfriend Jamie, Tyler enjoyed looking unavailable.
Jamie disagreed with nearly everything about Tyler’s routine.
He disliked the six o’clock alarms, the carefully weighed chicken breasts, and the way Tyler examined his stomach after every meal to make sure his abdominal muscles had not vanished.
“You know I’d still fancy you with a belly,” Jamie had told him that morning.
Tyler had lifted his shirt and looked at himself in the bedroom mirror.
“I wouldn’t.”
“You say that now.”
“I’ve worked too hard for these.”
Jamie had wrapped both arms around his waist.
“They’re lovely. But they’re not why I’m with you.”
Tyler had smiled, kissed him, and gone to the gym before Jamie could continue.
The remark remained in his head anyway.
The Refrigerator
After a heavy leg session, Tyler sat on the end of a weight bench, sweating and pleasantly exhausted.
He reached into his gym bag for the protein shake he had prepared at home.
Nothing.
Tyler searched again.
Towel. Phone. Spare shirt. Wrist straps.
No shake.
“Brilliant,” he muttered.
The gym maintained a small refrigerator beside the staff desk. Members occasionally stored drinks there during workouts. When Tyler opened it, he found half a dozen identical shaker bottles lined along the top shelf.
One contained a thick chocolate drink.
A strip of tape had been attached to its side, but the handwriting had smeared beneath condensation. Tyler could only make out three letters:
TY—
“Tyler,” he assumed.
He removed the bottle and drank.
The shake was richer than his usual protein mixture. It tasted of chocolate, cream, peanut butter, and something strangely warm.
Tyler swallowed half of it before stopping.
He looked at the blurred label again.
Beneath TY—, another line became visible:
EXTREME MASS / FULL TRANSFORMATION FORMULA
Tyler frowned.
“That’s not mine.”
A trainer at the far end of the room suddenly shouted.
“Has anyone seen the experimental bulk shake?”
Tyler looked at the half-empty bottle in his hand.
His stomach gave a deep, unnatural gurgle.
Softening
Tyler lowered the bottle.
A pressure spread beneath his abdominal muscles.
At first, he assumed the drink was simply heavy. Then the sharp lines across his stomach began to blur.
He lifted the bottom of his tank top.
His six-pack remained visible, but a thin layer of softness had appeared over it. When he pressed one finger into his stomach, the skin yielded in a way it never had before.
“No.”
Another gurgle moved through him.
His waist expanded against the elastic of his shorts.
Tyler sat perfectly still, watching the lowest pair of abdominal muscles disappear beneath a small rounded belly. His navel deepened. Soft flesh began settling over the waistband.
He stood abruptly.
His thighs pressed together more firmly than before.
The carefully defined muscles in his arms were smoothing too. They did not become weak or narrow. Instead, a thick layer of new weight spread over them, making his limbs larger but less sculpted.
Tyler tore off his headphones.
“Excuse me!”
The trainer turned.
Then his eyes widened.
“You drank it.”
“What is it?”
The man hurried toward him.
“It was prepared for a metabolic research trial.”
“What kind of trial?”
The trainer examined the empty half of the bottle.
“A rapid mass-gain simulation.”
Tyler looked down.
His belly had already grown large enough to form a visible roll above his shorts.
“Simulation?”
The trainer swallowed.
“The manufacturer uses that word rather loosely.”
The Bulk Phase
Tyler’s stomach surged outward.
He gasped and grabbed its sides as the small belly became heavy in his hands. His tank top rode upward, exposing a smooth, growing curve.
Weight gathered across his chest. His pectoral muscles softened and sagged, forming thick rounded breasts beneath the stretched white fabric.
His neck broadened.
A second chin formed when he looked down.
Tyler stumbled backward onto the bench.
“What do I do?”
The trainer was reading the microscopic print on the bottle.
“It says the formula converts existing metabolic potential into stored mass.”
“In English!”
“It’s making you fat.”
“I can see that!”
The bench creaked beneath him.
His hips widened around the narrow seat. His shorts tightened across his expanding thighs, while the elastic waistband rolled beneath the weight of his stomach.
Tyler tried to stand again.
The new belly dropped heavily into his lap.
It had become enormous—soft, warm, and impossibly fast-growing. His fingers sank into it as he tried to lift it away from the waistband.
People throughout the gym had stopped exercising.
Several were filming.
Tyler’s face burned.
“Put your phones away!”
His voice sounded different. Thicker. Breathless.
The transformation spread into his face, rounding his cheeks and softening the athletic angles of his jaw. His lips looked smaller between the new fullness.
Another surge pushed his stomach farther outward.
Tyler stared at it in disbelief.
His body had not merely lost its definition. It had become dramatically obese. His belly hung across his lap in multiple heavy folds. His thighs had expanded until they filled the space between his knees and the edge of the bench.
Yet beneath all that softness, some of his strength remained.
He could still feel the powerful muscles hidden inside his arms and legs.
He had become enormous in two different ways at once.
The Final Side Effect
Tyler raised both hands toward his headphones.
Something felt wrong beneath the band.
His curls had become loose.
A clump of brown hair slid across his forehead and landed on his stomach.
Tyler froze.
“No. Not that too.”
He pulled off the headphones.
More hair came with them.
Thick curls dropped across his shoulders. He dragged one hand through the top of his hair and came away holding enough to fill his palm.
The trainer checked the label again.
“There is a follicular diversion warning.”
Tyler stared at him.
“A what?”
“The formula redirects keratin production toward increasing body mass.”
“You’re telling me my hair is becoming fat?”
“Not literally.”
Another handful came away.
“Then I don’t care about the technical distinction!”
Within seconds, the curls thinned across the crown. His hairline broke apart, exposing pale scalp beneath it. The sides followed. Brown strands collected over his tank top and across the gym floor.
Tyler covered his head with both hands.
The remaining hair dissolved beneath his palms.
When he lowered them, his scalp was completely bald.
Smooth.
Not even stubble remained.
The white headphones now rested directly against the bare sides of his head.
Tyler sat amid the weights and mirrors, massively overweight, bald, and almost unrecognizable.
The transformation finally stopped.
Silence filled the gym.
Then Tyler heard himself breathing.
Heavy.
Fast.
Terrified.
The Locker-Room Mirror
Two staff members helped him into the locker room.
Tyler refused to look at the mirrors until they had left.
Then he slowly raised his head.
A huge bald man stared back.
His white tank top clung to a broad, soft chest and stopped halfway down his belly. The black shorts had stretched, but only barely contained his enormous hips and thighs. His stomach hung heavily over the waistband.
His face was still young.
That almost made the rest more startling.
Tyler lifted both hands to his bare scalp. The smoothness beneath his fingers felt impossible. His familiar curls—hair Jamie had spent hours playing with—were simply gone.
He turned sideways.
The belly projected far in front of him.
Tyler’s eyes filled.
He pulled out his phone and called Jamie.
Jamie answered cheerfully.
“Finished already?”
Tyler could not speak.
“Ty?”
“I drank something.”
“That sounds ominous.”
“I need you to come here.”
Jamie’s tone changed immediately.
“Are you hurt?”
“No. I don’t know. Just come.”
“I’m leaving now.”
Tyler ended the call before Jamie could ask anything else.
Jamie
Twenty minutes later, the locker-room door opened.
Jamie stepped inside.
He looked directly past Tyler.
“Where is he?”
Tyler’s stomach twisted.
“It’s me.”
Jamie slowly turned back.
His eyes moved from the bald head to the enormous belly and then returned to Tyler’s face.
“Tyler?”
Tyler nodded.
Jamie remained silent.
That silence hurt more than laughter would have.
“I drank the wrong shake,” Tyler said. “It was some experimental mass-gain thing. They don’t know whether it can be reversed.”
Jamie approached carefully.
“How do you feel?”
“Humiliated.”
“Physically.”
“Heavy. Hungry. My knees hurt.”
Jamie reached toward his head, then stopped.
“May I?”
Tyler swallowed and nodded.
Jamie placed one palm against the smooth scalp.
Tyler closed his eyes.
His boyfriend’s touch felt exactly as it always had—gentle, curious, affectionate. Jamie slowly traced the full curve of his head before letting his hand slide down Tyler’s cheek.
“You’re still in there,” Jamie said.
“Under quite a lot more of me.”
Jamie almost smiled, then caught himself.
“You can laugh.”
“I’m not laughing at you.”
“I look ridiculous.”
“You look shocked.”
“I’m bald and four times my size.”
“Perhaps three.”
Tyler glared at him.
“Not helping.”
Jamie crouched before him. He rested both hands against the vast belly filling Tyler’s lap.
The contact made Tyler tense.
“Don’t.”
Jamie immediately withdrew.
“I’m sorry.”
Tyler looked at his boyfriend’s hands.
After a moment, he took them and placed them back against his stomach.
“I’m frightened you won’t want me.”
Jamie’s expression softened.
“This morning, I told you I’d fancy you with a belly.”
“You couldn’t possibly have meant this much belly.”
“I’ll admit I had something smaller in mind.”
Despite himself, Tyler released a weak laugh.
Jamie leaned forward and kissed the center of his bald head.
Tyler’s eyes widened.
“You liked that.”
Jamie looked guilty.
“I’m trying to be supportive.”
“You kissed it twice.”
“I’m extremely supportive.”
Permanent Mass
The manufacturer called three hours later.
The transformation could not be reversed.
The formula had rewritten Tyler’s metabolism. Exercise would preserve the muscle buried beneath his new size, but his body would maintain its enormous weight. His hair follicles had become permanently inactive.
Tyler listened without speaking.
When the call ended, he sat in the passenger seat of Jamie’s car, staring through the window.
“I can’t compete now.”
“No.”
“I might not fit on half the gym equipment.”
“We’ll find equipment that fits.”
“I won’t look like me in photographs.”
Jamie took his hand.
“You’ll look like the person you are now.”
“That’s exactly what frightens me.”
They drove home in silence.
A Different Kind of Strength
The first weeks were difficult.
Tyler donated almost his entire wardrobe. Jamie helped measure him for clothes large enough to fit. They rearranged the bedroom and replaced one dining chair after it collapsed beneath him.
Tyler avoided mirrors.
He also avoided the gym.
On the fifteenth morning, Jamie placed Tyler’s headphones beside him at breakfast.
“You’re training today.”
“People stared.”
“They’ll eventually get bored.”
“They filmed me.”
“And you’re going to let them decide whether you’re allowed back?”
Tyler looked down at his belly.
“I don’t look like an athlete.”
Jamie leaned across the table.
“Then show them what an athlete can look like.”
Tyler returned that afternoon.
The transformation had not erased his strength. Beneath the weight, his muscles remained powerful. His bench press was almost unchanged, and the additional mass made him surprisingly stable during heavy lifts.
The gym stopped laughing when he outlifted nearly everyone present.
He changed his training goals.
No more chasing perfect definition.
No more starving for photographs.
He trained because he enjoyed being strong.
He trained because Jamie watched from across the room with obvious admiration.
And eventually, Tyler stopped pulling his shirt down whenever his stomach showed.
The Correct Shake
Six months later, Tyler sat on the same bench where the transformation had begun.
His bald scalp shone beneath the gym lights. White headphones covered his ears. His enormous belly rested comfortably across his thighs.
Jamie approached carrying two shaker bottles.
Tyler eyed them suspiciously.
“Labels?”
Jamie held them up.
TYLER — CHOCOLATE PROTEIN
JAMIE — STRAWBERRY
Tyler inspected the seals.
“You’ve become paranoid,” Jamie said.
“I transformed into a bald four-hundred-pound man because of one mislabeled drink.”
“Fair.”
Tyler took his bottle but did not open it.
Jamie leaned down and kissed his scalp.
“You know, the bald part really suits you.”
Tyler raised an eyebrow.
“And the rest?”
Jamie placed one hand on his belly.
“The rest gives me considerably more boyfriend.”
Tyler shook his head, smiling.
He opened the correct shake and drank carefully.
Nothing happened.
No sudden hunger.
No swelling.
No falling hair.
Jamie sat beside him.
Tyler rested his smooth head against his boyfriend’s shoulder.
He still missed his old body sometimes. He missed the curls, the visible muscles, and the ease with which he once moved through the world.
But Jamie’s hand settled against the broad curve of his stomach as naturally as it had once rested on his narrow waist.
Tyler looked around the gym.
People were watching him again.
This time, he did not shrink from it.
He lifted his headphones, reached for the waiting barbell, and grinned.
“Spot me?”
Jamie stood behind the bench.
“Always.”
