Laenne’s Blooming performance
Walking onto the stage from off in the wings, each piano note that is played, the point on Laenne’s shoes falls exactly in time with each. As the chord hits both points of her shoes touch down and slowly Laenne lowers herself to stand at first position. Her head tilts down as golden eyes look through a long lace veil down at the floor. Extending her arm to grasp at a shadowy figure on the other side. Laenne’s voice sounds in agony as she pleads in song with whomever she is reaching for, “Say something, I’m giving up on you.” Pulling her hand back and clasping the both of her hands to her chest she continues on with the same ache in her voice, “I’ll be the one, if you want me to.” Reaching out her arm again, Laenne rushes over to the other side of the stage to try and catch whoever was there , but then as she is in arm’s length, the figure disappears into nothing and she crosses her arms over her chest as she continues to sing, “Anywhere I would have followed you.”
Then as the figure reappeared on the opposite side of the stage, Laenne spun around to face it, and again reached out her hand towards it again. Pleading with the figure as she sang, her voice had a haunting quality behind it, “Say something, I’m giving up on you.” Taking a large step out, the figure disappears as she rises on the point of her shoe again and spins around in large circles as each foot is placed strategically on the floor. Standing in the middle of the stage, pirouetting throughout her singing, making the sheer skirt on her dress flutter around her waist, making it look like a lotus flower as it flares out, “And I…am feeling so small.” Collapsing down to the floor, Laenne places her hands out in front of her before continuing the song, “It was over my head, I know nothing at all”
Leaning forward and pinwheeling up onto her hands then rotating her legs behind her on the floor as she pushes herself up into a standing position, harmonizing with the music being played, she starts to walk around the edge of the stage, glancing at the audience from under her veil, “and I will stumble and fall” Taking a few missteps she falls forward swiftly before placing a hand on the ground to keep her upright then pushes herself back up as she continues to croon, “I’m still learning to love, just starting to crawl.”
Spinning around again to face the shadow as it reappears, she desperately tries to rush towards him, but is stopped by some invisible force in the middle of the stage and is sent flying back from whence she came. Falling onto the floor, she just sits there while reaching out to the shadow, her voice amplifies as she pleads, “Say something I’m giving up on you! I’m sorry that I couldn’t get to you.” Pushing herself up, Laenne moves a lot more slowly this time and lays her fingertips on the invisible barricade, and the shadow follows suit and lays its hands on the other side, as she confesses to it, “Anywhere I would have followed you.” Pushing back forcefully from the barrier, she rips off the veil from her head as her eyes move swiftly to stare at the figure, “Say something, I’m giving up on you!”
Lowering her arms to her sides, Laenne closes her eyes and lets the veil she took off to hang beside her leg. Facing away from the figure, her voice still has an achey quality to it, but also has an air of acceptance “And I will swallow my pride.” Taking several large steps away from where the barrier was, she stands at the other edge of the stage,“ You’re the one that I love, and I’m saying goodbye.”
Spinning around to face the saddened shadow, Laenne’s tone becomes more accusatory, nearly yelling out the song at it, clutching the veil in her hands, she sings “Ooooohhh…Say something I’m giving up on you!” Walking back to the barrier, she lays her hand on it for a split second before pulling it back away, “I’m sorry I couldn’t get to you. Anywhere I would’ve followed you.” Raising up her hands and clutching the veil inside of them, her eyes rest solely on the figure with a depressed look in them, “Say something, I’m giving up on you.”
Taking a few steps back from the barrier, Laenne slowly lowers herself to the floor as the other figure walks off in the other direction and disappears from sight and she slowly spins around the veil and it shifts and changes into a black lily that she carefully lays onto the ground as she sings the last few lines of the song, “Say something, I’m giving up on you. Say something.”
Taking a few moments to continue sitting on the floor, she rises up to her feet and curtsies towards the crowd before tossing the flower to someone in the audience.
