fuckit: a zine is looking for submissions!  If it’s about a time you said “Fuck it; let’s do this,” then that would be perfect.  If you would like to say “Fuck it; let’s do this” and write/create something you have been madly procrastinating on, that would also be good.  Art, essays, fiction, poetry, anything that can be printed out on paper and stapled, basically.   

Because this is my first zine and I a) have no idea whether people are going to want to buy it or not and b) would like to keep it priced dirt cheap (I’m thinking about $3 USD a copy), compensation will unfortunately start at contributor copies, probably some stickers, and my undying love and affection. 

The goal is to publish on January 31st, 2020, so I’d like to have submissions by January 1st so I can get the layout together.  If you’re interested, you can send me an ask, use the messenger, or my gmail address is the same as my username here but with a gmail on it.

We were but no one ever really decided what it was going to be about and tumblr is still limping along so I think we’ve decided we don’t need it yet.

But on the other hand I still kind of thing democracy is going to die and media is next and then we’ll need alternate ways of reaching out to each other and disseminating information so maybe we should start now for, like, practice.

So, original stuff, art and writing and maybe essays that don’t have to be that formal?  Could be political, if we’re feeling that kind of a way about things?  Anyone else in?  I got my Art Harder, Motherfucker mug in the mail yesterday, and I own a stapler now, although not the long one you’d traditionally use for zining.  And I’d like to fuck around with odd layouts more.

Project: VOTE MOTHERFUCKER VOTE

So it is officially past Christmas and the muzak at work has finally turned away from carols (and I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy to hear The Same Fifteen Songs We Always Play in my life) but anyway that means it is time to start thinking about the New Year and such, and I have been thinking, and the thought is this:

I don’t think Project: VOTE MOTHERFUCKER VOTE should be a chapbook.

I don’t think it’s enough.  I think it’s a single, concentrated shout, and that’s something, but what we really need is a chorus of fucking fire alarms going off at random intervals.  I think we need to be perpetually flicking our followers’ ears going “Hey.  Hey.  Hey.”  I think we need to be fucking Navi from Legend of Zelda, and here is how we do this:

Just fucking post about voting.  Once a week, if you’d like, or once a month if that’s more your speed.  Once a fortnight, if that’s how you feel.  Pick your interval – daily, hourly if you’ve got the will and the chutzpah – and post about voting that often.  Post/reblog a link to a good article.  Make some art that expresses how you feel about voting.  Put the words VOTE MOTHERFUCKER VOTE into whatever meme generator happens to be trendy in that five-second span of time and post it.

Post information about voting.  Post information about voting-related charities.  Gleefully trash the politicians you hate the most while talking up their opponents.  Whatever you think will get people not only registered to vote but also out there on the day, in their polling locations, ready to kick some ass and earn that fucking sticker.  Just do it, do it, do it, do it from New Year’s to Election Day.

So that’s your New Year’s Resolution suggestion from me to you.  That’s the challenge I want you to give yourself.  Say “Once a day/week/fortnight/month 45-day-cycle/whatever, I am going to tell my followers to go out and vote” and then follow through on that.

Just yell, really.  Just yell a lot.  I know people say that doesn’t help, but where the fuck does silence get you it isn’t real far I speak from experience.  So let’s make a consistent racket.

Also I’m going to try to come up with some swag, maybe not by New Year’s but within the month of January.  I just need to actually map out my pattern and start embroidering that shit.  It’ll be flowery.  It’ll be cool.

Anyway, that’s what we’re doing.  If you want in, then jump in.

IT’S FINALLY FUCKING HERE.

A little over a year ago, I had a dumb idea and put it up on tumblr real fast before I went to work and didn’t think anything would come of it, but today there is a thing where there was not a thing before, and all of that is because of you guys, so thank you all. 

Here is the official Etsy description:

The Cassandra Project was born out of a frantic post-election desire to do something, anything, to make the world a little brighter.  I settled on the very sensible solution of compiling, editing, and printing an anthology about the mythological figure of Cassandra (as you do), and using it to raise money for charity.  A little over a year later, and certainly much to my surprise, The Cassandra Project is a real, honest-to-goodness chapbook, featuring:  poetry by L.S., Moriah Norton, Emily Bascom, Kimberly Beverage, Rowan Burns, and myself; fiction by Naomi Tajedler and Laura E. Price; art by Naderegen, Heather Bain, and myself; and this thing involving graphs and statistics that I can’t even describe but goddamn it’s cool.  Every penny raised by the sale of this book is going to benefit RAINN, the United States’ largest anti-sexual violence organization.

There is some good goddamn stuff in this book, not at all limited to the graph thing (although the graph thing is pretty cool.)  Reblog it around, exhort your friends to buy it, raise some money for RAINN.  It is only five dollars a book, because I am making people pay their own shipping this time.  Get it for Christmas for everyone you know.  Make all your friends buy it for you.  I’m sure it’ll fit terrific in a stocking.  Or, being rectangular, it should be simple to wrap and is not large enough to require much paper.  Do your planned New Year’s Resolutions involve reading more poetry and donating to charity?  Now you can do both!  It slices!  It dices!  It doesn’t actually do either of these, but it’ll fit decently in your glovebox so you can think about prophecy while driving.  Guys, it’s a good book raising money for a good cause.  Just buy the dang thing.

VERY IMPORTANT UPDATE:

Those of you who have bought chapbooks from me before will know that I usually do free shipping on them and just factor that into the cost.  I hadn’t wanted to do that with this one because I felt like it would overly complicate things with wanting to donate the whole cost of the book to RAINN, and that it would be easier just to have you guys pay shipping to Etsy.  And while I was at it, why not have them calculate the costs of the shipping?  Nice.  Simple.  Easy.

IT TURNS OUT – Etsy goes for the expensive shipping with tracking and stuff that costs way more than the book, and that feels pretty damn weird to me and apparently it felt weird to some of you guys too. 

SO.  I went back and figured out how to enter flat-rate shipping.  If you’re in the U.S., it’ll cost you $1.50 for shipping.  You won’t be able to track it, but I don’t think anyone’s lost a package so far, and everyone seems to get theirs in a few days.  So for anyone who looked at the book, looked at the price, and then looked at the shipping and had a minor heart attack – go back.  Check again.  It’s better now, I swear.

Holy shit you guys, I think we might be about to pull this one off. 

So we’re supposed to be up on the Wordstitcher Press etsy shop on Tuesday.  It’s gonna take a little more work for me (okay, a lot more work for me) to get us there, but barring some kind of catastrophe, I should be able to get the work done. 

A couple of notes before Tuesday comes:

I am excited to announce that this project is officially raising money for RAINN!  Unlike other Wordstitcher press stuff, 100% of the proceeds are going to the organization.  So if you want to see RAINN get a big pile of money, and god knows they could use it, please signal boost the hell out of this when it’s up and posted.  In fact, reblog this post too, get people excited -- that’s why everyone’s work is up on the screen right now.  Look at all that shit.  That’s some good shit up there.  Share that shit around.

Also -- I am sort of excited and also sort of not-excited to tell you all that since I appear to have pulled this off once, I am going to attempt to pull it off again, because masochism is my thing.  The Cassandra Project #2 is going to be called “VOTE MOTHERFUCKER VOTE.“ I’d like to get it out sometime in late August/early September, and it’s basically going to be and whoever else I can rope into it yelling about why everyone should vote.  If you want to shout at people to vote and have that immortalized forever (or for a few years) in chapbook format, HERE’S YOUR FUCKING CHANCE.  Come talk to me if you’re interested.  My goal with this one is to do my humble best to get a couple more people out there voting so hopefully we don’t have to do The Cassandra Project #3 -- I love you all and I don’t regret this but if I could just do poetry to make a couple bucks and spread some art around rather than as preparation for the time when me and my HP ENVY are the last surviving remnants of what was once a free press -- you know, that’d be nice. 

I have fears.  I have many fears.  If you have fears, you know, maybe we can fight those monsters together.

Also, for anyone who might’ve originally signed on to the first Cassandra Project and then had to back out for whatever reason -- no grudges held, if you want to take a stab at doing something for the next one I will happily welcome you back no questions asked.  So if that is a concern for anyone, seriously, don’t let it be.  Shit happens; as far as I’m concerned, we’re all still cool.

REMINDER: SUBMISSIONS FOR THE CASSANDRA PROJECT ARE DUE NOVEMBER 4TH

If you have gotten yours to me already – THANK YOU YOU FUCKING ROCK.  I have finally gotten my head far enough out of Rocky Horror Costuming Hell to look things over, so I’ve even replied to some e-mails like a real grown up. 

If you are planning on sending yours to me soon – Cool.  Stay in that frame of mind.

If you are not sure you are gonna get done and freaking out – Come talk to me.  We will figure it out. 

If you are dropping out – I would prefer if you let me know, but if you’re just quiet then I’m sure I’ll figure it out.

I will be formatting the book throughout November with a goal of having it for sale by December 2nd.  If you send me something on November 30th and we hadn’t already discussed it, there’s basically no way for me to squeeze it in and I’ll probably try anyway and there’ll be tears and sleeplessness and I work retail so I’ll be doing that enough as it is, so please let’s just skip that part.  No moral judgments, life happens, just know that you’ve got to either get your stuff to me or get in touch with me by November 4th, please please please.

ALSO:  I do know we still need to pick a charity.  I will be posting a short list of ones that I like a lot, with links – if you have one that you want to add that isn’t on there, please reply/reblog so I can do the big master list.  But we do need to pick fairly soon, so we can let people know so they know what their money is supporting.
