Jason enjoys being Robin, don’t get him wrong—but sometimes it’s stressful. He didn’t exactly come into Bruce Wayne’s life wanting to be a vigilante. Anyway, he enjoys it but sometimes he likes to swing up high and hide beneath his favorite gargoyle and smoke. This is where he meets the guy in a red helmet.
He doesn’t…set off any alarms in Jason’s head. If anything, startlingly enough, his presence makes him feel safe? Jason doesn’t even know how he got up to his secret spot, and the guy doesn’t offer any answer. They don’t say anything to each other. The guy just…offers him a cigarette. So they sit there together, legs swinging over the side of the building, smoking. The guy’s helmet doesn’t fully come off, just enough to reveal his mouth. He’s got the same jawline as Willis.
Jason leaves before red helmet guy.
He ends up back there maybe a week later. Red helmet is there. Again they sit and smoke, no words exchanged. This repeats for a while.
One day, “Red”, as Jason has begun calling him in his head, has a book. Jason’s never heard of it before, but it seems up his alley. Red gives it to him. It’s annotated to hell and back. Jason adds his own notes, he keeps the book next to his bedside.
This goes on for a while. Red bringing books Jason’s never heard of. Jason keeps some, then gives some back so they can swap notes on whatever story of the week it was. They don’t speak, only pass notes.
After a particularly rough argument with Bruce, Jason flees to the hidden spot. Red is already there with chili dogs. Jason doesn’t know how he does it, but he thinks Red knows him better than he knows himself sometimes. Some part of him wonders if Red is supposed to be some guardian angel. Some part wonders if he’s even real at all. He doesn’t really know, but cant bring himself to look too hard into it. Perhaps it’s fear of an illusion shattering, perhaps it’s the fact his little silent hangouts have him feeling like he can breathe after being submerged for so long.
Red gives him brass knuckles and a far more intensive medkit than anything he’s seen carried in the cave. Red also gives him warm gloves that are Catherine’s favorite color, and occasionally the cheap candy Willis used to bring him before money got tight.
Jason gets hurt pretty badly sometimes and can’t make it to their little hideout. He feels oddly young when he finds out those who hurt him end up in custody in similar conditions. It’s odd to feel protected by someone whose face he hasn’t seen. Still, it makes him feel warm in a way he hasn’t felt in a while. He loves Bruce, he does, but Bruce isn’t alley-bred. Jason knows Red is alley-bred. It’s just an instinct those from it have, the ability to sense one another. Bruce can act as Batman, but rarely does the lashing out when Robin is hurt feel like it’s for Jason. Red acts like Willis did once, lashing out to protect Jason, for Jason.
Jason can’t help but sometimes get the sinking feeling that Red would go to lengths that Bruce wouldn’t if it came down to it to it. He doesn’t know how to feel about that. He doesn’t necessarily like to think about it, the guilt and dread sit heavy in his stomach.
Some days Jason feels older than he is, and it makes his body ache. The responsibility of Robin, of being tied to a socialite, of not being fully understood it weighs heavy. On those days he thinks he resents Bruce and Alfred a little. He isn’t sure.
He doesn’t have to say it, say how exhausted he is, maybe it shows on his face. Each time, without fail, Red tucks him into his side and he feels like he’s huddled under Willis’s arm again. He feels like a kid, and takes deep breaths to keep his eyes from spilling when Red gently rubs the back of his neck like Catherine would.
He doesn’t really know what Red is. If he’s related to him somehow. If he was sent by the universe or maybe his parents from beyond the veil. If he’s human, fae, angel, demon—in the end it doesn’t matter. What matters is that Jason knows Red loves him, and he’s pretty sure he loves Red too.
