[ A nod was all Evangeline gave in answer. Then, as if realising the rude and stand-offish way her silence could be interpreted, she queried hesitantly — ] Do you really like, um, Egyptian mythology?

"I do," Iris replied, nodding enthusiastically. "I've never really educated myself much on the subject, but I've always found it completely fascinating. It was one of my favorite things I learned in history class. Well- it was really the only thing that caught my interest in that class to be honest."

Oh, he thought with a grin, she thinks I’m Carson. Xander leaned heavily against the gym’s exterior, his eyes raking the woman up and down. “I’m fine,” he said airily, a smirk on his face. “A lot better now that I’ve run into you.”

She was a little -scratch that- a lot taken aback by his blatant leering. Iris wasn't blind, and Carson had given her appearance appreciative glances before, but never in such an overt way. "I'm... glad to hear it." She said after a moment. "That you're fine that is." She had half a mind to ask him if he was feeling alright, but decided that would sound ridiculous.

"I’m sure you can sing, everyone can sing just- Some do not have the tones down to a good tone? If you get what i mean." he chuckled and smiled at her, taking in her presence and the light conversation liking it. "What do you do for a living then Iris?" He said with a smile.

"I would sing something to prove it to you, but that would just be an embarrassment." She smiled back at him and found herself genuinely enjoying his company. "I'm a nurse- a neonatal nurse specifically."

"You really do." he more or less grinned in her direction. "I have this thing for jazz music, or at least with a guitar it doesn’t exactly turn into jazz, but I like that and the whole acoustic thing." he chuckled. "I’m the unoriginal guy when it comes to music and it’s romance."

Iris shrugged kindly. "Hey, you like what you like. Who cares about originality if it makes you happy? I would love to know how to play an instrument, or even just be able to sing without scaring people away." She added with a little self-deprecating laugh.

He would never admit it aloud (did he ever truly admit anything, even to himself?) but Xander was quite a fan of going to the gym and exercising. Something about the way his muscles burnt afterwards, the sheen on his shoulder blades, the way that - if he had worked out correctly - the hair on the back of his nape stuck to his neck just so, like it did after an intense one night stand. And, of course, there were all the attractive girls to watch and flirt with. The insecure ones were the easiest to convince to go home with him, but they weren’t his favourite. He liked a challenge. Still, two hours at Espresso Yourself (he had supposed to have worked an eight hour shift, but spent the first six hours on his couch, drinking beer and smoking) and he found himself headed towards the gym, in need of a good stress reliever. Will O’ The Wisp didn’t open for another few hours. Sweat towel over his shoulder and gym bag in hand, Xander didn’t even notice the girl rounding the corner until she’d both bumped into him and then apologised.

"In a hurry are we, princess?"

Given the man's tone of voice it took her a moment to fully realize who was standing in front of her. His demeanor may have been different but the face was Carson's. Her brow furrowed slightly, a little confused by his change in attitude. "I... no, I just wasn't paying attention to where I was going." She smiled hesitantly at him. "How have you been? Apart from me accidentally knocking you over."

Ev … angeline [ the girl said, hesitating slightly on the first syllable. She rarely introduced herself to other people, and often referred to herself - in her own head - as Ev, or Evan, or Evie, or any shortened variation of her name, really ] It’s um, it’s n-nice to meet you … Iris. [ Cordial formalities over and Ev’s heart racing only slightly faster than usual, she was relieved to be asked a question she knew something about ] Yes actually. It’s - it’s - um, I actually think it’s in the p-pile you knocked over. I saw it there yesterday … I think.

"Evangeline, that's a beautiful name. It's nice to meet you as well." After Evangeline continued speaking Iris glanced back towards the pile in question. She crossed over to it, eyes scanning down the row of spines until she saw another Ancient Egyptian book. Iris extracted this one with extra care, not wanting a repeat of last time, and then brought it back over to the young woman. "This one?"

Blood, Sweat, and Tears was right. Iris had only been working out for thirty minutes and she already felt like going home, taking a shower, and then lying on her couch completely immobile for the rest of the afternoon. It was only ten minutes later that she gave in to the temptation. After wiping down the machine and chugging the rest of her water she finally starter to make her way out of the gym. She was so exhausted that she wasn't paying much attention to her surroundings and almost barreled right into someone when she turned the corner. "I'm sorry!"

[ Evangeline took note of the book, and nodded gently. Despite the thousands of books in the store, she had taken it upon herself to know every single one of them. It helped, of course, that it was mainly her that shelved the books, especially when people dropped off boxes of ones they were giving away ] It focuses, um, more on Horus and Isis and Anubis and Set and Osiris than um, any of the others, but it’s still … it’s still good. I just … I would’ve liked more on, er, Nut and Thoth and, um, others.

Wow, this girl really knew her stuff. Iris was impressed. "Is there a different one lurking around here that you liked more? I know this place is like a maze, though, so if it's too much trouble I could always stick with this one." Suddenly Iris realized she had yet to properly introduce herself and was stunned by her lapse in manners. "I'm Iris by the way," she said with a warm smile. Considering how her close proximity had made the girl uncomfortable before she decided against initiating a handshake.

"Pleasure is all mine." He replied in between Iris’s words. He chucled at her words, letting his eyes wander a little before ending upon her again. "I write and play music, you can come listen to me once if you’d like, I’m often playing at Frostbite on fridays and sometimes at the diner. Whenever they feel like having music, I show up." He chuckled.

Iris didn't frequent Frostbite. Their hot chocolate was fantastic of course, but she rarely found herself in the mood to go there. Now, however, she was reconsidering her opinion. "I'll have to come some time. What kind of music do you play?"

[ A small smile graced her lips ] It’s a good thing I don’t watch films, then. [ Vaguely, she noted the fact that she hadn’t stammered. Pulling an all-nighter to finish a book wasn’t a foreign concept to Evangeline; in fact, it was one of the most common ways she had spent her high school nights, dreading the coming day. It was second only to staying up writing her own stories, of course. Suddenly, Evangeline remembered where she was and what she was supposed to be doing: working ]

Are you - are you looking for anything, er, in particular?

Iris shook her head. "No, nothing in particular. I usually just browse around until something catches my interest." She looked down at the large novel in her hands. It was a book on Ancient Egyptian mythology, a subject that had always intrigued Iris, though she'd never read much about it. She held it up. "I'm on the fence about this one. Any thoughts?"

[ Still, it’s more than some others would do. Evangeline thought the words but didn’t dare speak them aloud. At the older woman’s movement towards her, Evangeline blanched slightly, but regained her composure under the warm smile sent her way. She sighed internally at her own reaction; the sooner she got used to people being in her personal space, the faster she could make friends. But it was those small few hurdles that really held her back. The question pulled Evan from her train of thought, and she had to glance down at the book to remind herself ] Memoirs of A Geisha. It was - I found it in a box someone dropped off here yesterday and - um, it’s good. Not, um, a rare book or anything but, uh, still good.

Iris berated herself for moving closer when it seemed to only make the girl even more uneasy, she should have thought of that. One of her best friends in high school had social anxiety and had hated anyone getting too close, even her friends. Iris lit up when she heard the title of the book. "I really enjoyed that one, it's sad but fascinating. If I remember correctly I pulled an all-nighter because I just couldn't put it down. I wasn't a huge fan of the film adaptation, though." Then again Iris rarely was when it came to movies based on novels.

The humour in her voice was evident and Carson couldn’t help the chuckle which left his lips at her words. “Oh I do hope to get the reputation of Superman for ladies above 50+.” he said and grinned his cheeky smile. As she took her hand out, Carson took it and gentlyy shook it with a firm grip. “Nice to meet you Iris, I’m Carson, Carson Morgenstern.” He couldn’t help himself and put his second and above hers as if it was a reasurring gesture.

"Carson," she repeated with a nod, committing the name to memory. "It's nice to meet you too." Iris realized she was still clasping hands with him and pulled hers back, hoping he hadn't found the prolonged shake awkward. "So, what do you do when you aren't saving the elderly?" Iris realized she was resorting to basic small-talk topics right now, but she was genuinely curious.

[ Evangeline’s blue eyes widened slightly as her gaze landed on Iris, standing over by the books with an embarrassed look on her face. She knew the woman by reputation only, but admired her warm, nurturing nature immensely. It was so unlike Evangeline’s own mother’s nature. A slight flush coloured her cheeks as she realised she was staring slightly, and she quickly busied herself by marking the spot in the book she had been reading ] Oh! Um, no it’s - it’s, um, it’s okay. Happens a lot. By itself, even. Um, thanks for - for— [ she broke off, gesturing fruitlessly towards the book stack ] um, y’know, fixing it.

"It was my mess, I'd feel bad for leaving it." She studied the soft-spoken girl for a moment. She was clearly anxious and it immediately made Iris want to put her at ease. The older woman took a step forward, smiling kindly down at the girl. "What are you reading? I always find the most interesting books here."

Carson turned around to find Iris. He knew who she was, but he had never known her personally. All he knew was the rumours around town how her husband treated her and of course Carson felt compassion for her situation. “Ah, you might be right there. I do lack some modesty, but at least I make up for it. I’m sorry for my behaviour.” He said with a kind and apologetic smile.

Iris chuckled softly. "No need to apologize, I'm sure old women everywhere are already hearing tales of your heroic efforts." She held out her hand, "I'm Iris, I don't believe we've met." She'd seen this man around before, but she was completely blanking on a name.

[ The store’s interior is much warmer than the weather outside, and the bell above the door rings brightly, signalling new customers stepping in from the cold. Evangeline hardly stirs from her spot up the front of the store where she’s near hidden by haphazard piles of books in varying stack sizes. She does, however, smile warmly (albeit shyly) at those browsing closest to her. The slender black cat next to her stirred as a nearby pile of books slid to the floor - a common occurrence - and she reached out, petting Keats as she murmured to him — ] You really should be used to that by now.

Iris enjoyed the bookstore, haphazard appearance and all. She never entered the store looking for a particular book (if she did that would likely be a fruitless and time-consuming endeavor) but instead she simply browsed. It was fun to come across volumes that were over 100 years old, books she'd never heard of, and even the occasional odd nick-knack. She spotted a particularly interesting book and when she pulled it from the pile the rest of the books were put off-balance by the sudden loss of weight and slid to the floor. "Sorry Keats," she said as she bent over to pick up the fallen books. Once she had fixed the stack she turned to the young woman who had spoken, sporting a slightly embarrassed smile. "I wish I could say that's the first time I've done that here."

"This morning an old lady was unfortunate to carry her things by herself and considering the gentleman I am I more or less carried it all for her." Carson grinned proudly. "I deserve some good guy points right there."

"I'd say you've been successful with your good guy attempt, now I'd recommend working on your modesty." Her tone was light and joking; it had been nice of him to do something like that after all.

THE CHILDLESS ❄ 29 ❄ HUMAN ❄ FC: OLIVIA WILDE

"Wishes don’t always come true."

Being a woman filled with love made her the perfect mother already in a very young age. The whole subject of the perfect life was a part of our woman’s picture, unfortunately there was a problem, which would haunt her for the rest of her life.  Getting married to the perfect husband in a very early age made our friend here more than ready to make a family, and when he was ready too they without a doubt tried. Unfortunately, they got the bad news from the doctor that she could not have children. It was devastating news for someone who had more or less used their whole life preparing for the mother role, but what could she do if this was what her life would give? What she hadn’t except though was that her husband would take the fall even harder than her, and even if he loved her and showed it, she knew very well of the fact that he wasn’t faithful. Our girl is very kind and gentle and shows compassion in her grieving for never having a child but maybe if she is lucky there’s a teenager or child in Silvercrest who would need the attention she is prepared to give.

Relationships:

The Cheater: Her husband and without a doubt a man she could see herself growing old with. Unfortunately he’s got other escapades on the side and no matter how much she loves him, she doesn’t find it fair how he treats her with his weekend visits to the hotel. 

The Foreigner: Once upon a time they where high school sweethearts and he’s always been such a kind man. Unfortunately another came into her life and she believed him to be the love of her life, but in fact she left him for someone who would never treat him like he did. She values his friendship and even if there cannot happen anything between them, she wishes for it.
