A Guide to Aphrodite’s Epithets
Aphrodite is a goddess of many forms. She is one of the older goddesses, born from Ouranos. She is the sister to the Titans, the Furies, the Meliae, and the Giants.
She is the mother of Harmonia and Eros, the Graces and Peitho, but also of Anteros, of Phobos and Deimos and Adestria. She is vengeful and chaotic, existing in the passion that drives wars and artists, in the lust that fuels affairs and assaults, in the love that fuels suicides and marriage.
In my experience, the epithet you worship is insanely important. Aphrodite Ourania is much more lighthearted than Aphrodite Skotia, or Aphrodite Tymborychos.
Aphrodite Ourania is a Lady of the Heavens. She is lipstick marks on softly written poetry, she is pink roses in a pearl encrusted vase.
Aphrodite Ambologera is children braiding each others hair at kindergarten, teenagers whispering about boys and girls, twenty one year olds partying hard and living life.
Aphrodite Anadyomene is the feeling of ocean water over your feet. She is collecting seashells on the shore, collecting sand and water for spells and rituals.
Aphrodite Apaturia is teenage drama, that seems life ending at first but silly as you grow older. She is the gossip and drama that weaves its way into youth, and she smiles as you live your own movie.
Aphrodite Apotrophia is the mother standing over her child, watchful for creeps. She is the older sister clinging to the younger, she is the one you pray to after being assaulted, the one that will hold you close and take revenge for you.
Aphrodite Areia stands beside her lover in battle. She sees the passion that drove these young men to war, sees the fight in their eyes. She fights alongside them, whispering reminders in their ears about who they are fighting for, for their wives and daughters at home.
Aphrodite Despoina is seen in femme fatales, the click of black stilettos and women that know their worth. She stands beside women with fire in their eyes, by hardworking women that know they are meant for more, by CEOS that know their place, and that their place is at the top.
Aphrodite Gameloi walks you down the aisle alongside your father, watches as you say your vows. She stands beside Hera and blesses your marriage, crying and wishing you the best as your own mother would.
Aphrodite Gentyllis sits with you as you birth your first child, and every child after that. She holds your hand and kisses you on the forehead, wishing you the best as she leaves for the next.
Aphrodite Melainis looks in shadows at night, watching you as you walk home. She will take revenge for you if you need, and it will be delivered brutally.
Aphrodite Nikephoros stands beside olympians and generals alike, celebrating in their victory. She stands beside soldiers as they rejoice, by athletes as they cry, and by children as they win their first tournament. She is there for the small and the big victories, from making your first successful dinner to winning a war.
Aphrodite Pandemos sees no difference between a while child or a black child. You are all her children, and she will kiss you on the forehead and tell you she is proud. She stands with you, whether you can afford fancy offerings or altars, she is of the people, for the people.
Aphrodite Peitho stands beside you as you seduce your first lover. She is there as you beg your parents for a dog, as you persuade your mother to let you sleepover at your friends house for the first time.
Aphrodite Skotia stands beside you as you insult. She stands with you as you cover yourself in the ruins of your purity, and she cradles you when you weep for your innocence. When you cry over your sins, she is there, reminding you that she too, is Unholy, and it is okay.
Aphrodite Tymborychos stands with the survivors community, with rape victims and domestic abuse survivors. She stands with women that have slaughtered their abusers, with daughters and sons that have stood up to abusive parents. She stands in the middle of riots for freedom, because if her children cannot stand free then their oppressors should not stand at all.
She is all of these at once, and she is there. You can find her wherever you look, in poetry books or romance novels. You can find her in the laughter of young girls and the tears of victims. You can find her in graveyards, whispering her revenge to abusers and murderers, reminding them that she is a gravedigger and a mother, and harm that befalls her children is a slight to her.
DISCLAIMER: You do not have to choose an epithet. This is here to remind you that Aphrodite comes in many forms, and the Aphrodite you worship sometimes won’t line up with someone else’s. <3
Star Reading: a How To
I’ve gotten a lot out of the witchcraft community on tumblr so it’s time I contribute something.
Star Reading is something I figured out on my own. I actually haven’t found anyone that does this or something similar so if you already do, let me know! I’d love to find others and trade experiences and techniques.
Okay so here goes. The very best time to do a star reading is during a new moon on a cloudless night, and around as little light pollution as possible. But. We’ll take what we can get, right?
All right so we’re standing outside, preferably not too many trees or buildings to block our sight and we have a good view of the stars. Now if you’re reading for yourself then you don’t have to do anything special but if you’re reading for someone else I generally hold their hands so as to become a channel for the messages, and when I did long distance readings I would cast an energy circle and then draw the person’s identifier (their chosen name or a spirit guardian or something similar) into the circle so as to connect with them.
Once you’ve got that connection, you’ll need to shift your consciousness (I think that’s the term?) just like you would during scrying or other forms of divination or meditation. I’ve seen lines between the stars for at least as long as I’ve noticed them, 6+ years or so, so this is second-hand to me. If you’re a space witch or deal with the stars already this might come easier to you too. But basically, you shift your consciousness so that you’re not just seeing the stars that would be in certain constellations, but rather you’re seeing the constellation, lines and all. You might start out by looking for constellations you know, or asterisms like the Big Dipper.
Now that you’ve got that down, let the lines appear at random, forming shapes and figures you haven’t seen in the sky before. These could be anything, from hearts to skulls to flowers. Be creative in your interpretation, because the sky can’t always paint a masterpiece for you, and also because you might get some unorthodox images that you wouldn’t expect but you should go with anyway. Heck, I saw a desert shrew just a week or two ago for someone.
This is where your mind actively comes in. You’ve gotta be the one to interpret this symbolism. What does this traditionally mean? What kind of feeling does this give you? If it doesn’t have a traditional meaning, look up what the object is in detail (like the desert shrew) and make connections. Likewise, if you don’t know the significance of a symbol (like the sharks I saw a few weeks ago for myself) don’t be afraid to look it up.
Repeated symbolism is generally important, but notice any changes between the specific images - those could be significant too. Notice how the symbols interact. And be careful that you’re only taking into account the images you’re actually seeing, and not the ones your conscious mind wants to see.
You’ll generally get a feeling of closing when you see the last symbol you needed to see. I usually go for three distinct images but it could be more or less. You’ll know when you get the feeling, but you don’t necessarily have to keep going if you’re not getting it after, say, twenty images.
Okay! I set you off into the night sky to interpret what you can. If you do this successfully (or have already been doing it successfully), reblog or reply with your experience? What things worked for you? What didn’t? Any inside advice you have to offer?

If you think it's wrong or shameful for someone to have a casual relationship to magic, witchcraft, the gods, etc., you are functionally a fundamentalist. There's no difference between you and the Bible thumper who thinks everybody needs to be in constant prayer and thinking about God's will at all times.
Once while preparing a banishing ritual I wanted to really amp up the protective power of the circle I was gonna cast but I suck at sigil making and I don't like using other people's sigils so I took seven pieces of paper and wrote "fuck off" on each of them and placed them around my circle. Casual doesn't mean less powerful.
It worked, btw.

Ultimate Deity Communication Tarot Spread
This is my own spin on the Ultimate Deity Communication spread. I combined two spreads when originally trying to identify my deities, and it resonated really strongly for me. This and this are the originals I combined. I did NOT write the bulk of the descriptors, that goes to The Tarot Guru who has some AWESOME material! The numbers on the cards are NOT a strict order to lay them in, they are simply for identification with the meanings. I lay them in different orders depending on where my intuition is calling me. Make sure to consider the interplay of different cards in this one! I always wait to flip the middle card until the very end because I want a good picture of the deity before I prejudice myself. I prefer to do this spread with my most neutral deck, specifically a Rider-Waite, because I have found that my deities have very different preferred methods to communicate with my but all of them can make this work. I only use this for identifying spirits, I use other spreads once I have identified them.
Tarot Spread for Three Part Deities
This is atypical spread I will use when working with The Morrigan or Nemain, and will work wonderfully for any three part goddess. The spread can either be read as a whole or as each branch representing a different aspect. For instance, when working with The Morrigan I will often have one branch be Macha's thoughts on the matters, one be Badb's, and one be Nemain's. When aspect it like that, I will also lay a card in the center to receive the overall opinion. I have found it works better not to use reversals with this spread. I also typically start with just three cards, and continue to add cards in this pattern as needed until I have a full picture of the situation.
✨ a tarot spread i made for trying to see who’s reaching out to you ✨
1. card to represent entity
queen of cups - a beautiful, introspective woman sits on a throne at the edge of the sea. this entity is a women or has feminine energy, she is caring and compassionate. intuitive and creative, she goes with the flow. she might be an empath, a highly sensitive person, a healer, or psychic.
2. my relationship to them
the empress - a full figured woman, with a peaceful aura and peaceful energy. perhaps someone from my maternal line, with the previous card it seems to make sense that it is a female. a call to connect with feminine energy. she is also deeply connected to nature and perhaps is calling me to connect with nature and the female divine as well. with the pregnant belly showing, it really points to being a maternal ancestor.
3. why are they reaching out
the sun - her warmth and light shine down on me, she wants me to be happy and positive. she wants me to live life to the fullest that perhaps the people who came before me couldn’t have. she wants me to be open and confident, free and careless.
4. how they relate to my ancestors / are they an ancestor?
the hierophant - either they taught my ancestors about spirituality and tradition or they were an ancestor who taught others. they passed on knowledge, perhaps cultural traditions. with the previous cards, it would make sense for this person to be some kind of spiritual advisor or healer.
5. what can i do to hear them out?
page of wands - communicate via prayer or just talking, they want me to undertake a journey but for it to be creative, lively, and free. they want me to be full of energy and find my passion and go for it. perhaps a path similar to the one they took.
6. what can i do to honor them?
eight of pentacles - card of apprenticeship and mastery, whatever i’m currently practicing, keep doing what i’m doing because this is the right path. i’m currently in college studying art history, and trying to learn more and more about my own history. i must keep at this. they are encouraging me to do so. i will achieve success this way.
7. card to represent their origin
seven of wands - this is someone who was fiery at times and stood up for what they believed in. perhaps they were caught in the middle of a battle or constantly had people against them or critical of them. despite their sensitive nature, they defended themselves and protected what they cared about. if they were a teacher of some sort, then it would make sense for them to have a few who did not agree with them.
extra pulled cards: page of pentacles
oracle cards: warrior woman and answer the call
hi!! sorry if i bother you but i can’t find anything on the internet. so, i have aphantasia, idk if u know this condition but essentially i can’t see images in my head bc my mind eye is completely blind. i feel so bad about this.. i’m a baby witch and i feel lost! how can i put intents? how can i meditate or find my deities if i can’t see in my mind? if you have any advice i’d love them so much. thank you 🥰
Hello! I said this in a recent ask, but it definitely applies here too: “I think it’s important to remember that just because things in witchcraft are commonly done certain way, it doesn’t mean it’s the only way.” (link to that ask - on meditation and visualization with intrusive thoughts).
I actually found a couple posts written by others who have aphantasia:
Some thoughts and tips from a witch with aphantasia
How to visualize when you don’t see pictures in your head
How to be a witch when you suck at visualizing
How to ground with aphantasia
3 meditation tips for witches with aphantasia
Meditation with aphantasia
Personal cleansing and shielding with low visualization
A few witches with aphantasia have interacted with this post!
Here are some things that may help:
Many witches struggle with visualization for a variety of reasons, and my advice is almost always: Make it tangible. Make it physical. Make it something you can see.
Drawing. Draw yourself, then whatever energy you want to influence. Draw sigils. Draw your home and layers of the wards you’d like to place.
Writing. Write down your intentions. I personally like to do this and then either burn the piece of paper or keep it someplace where I can be reminded of it. Each time I see it again and re-read the intentions it’s like I’m recharging it!
Movement. Physically move your body where you want the energy to go. Are you warding your home? Walk, and move your hands along the walls and the places you’d like to ward. Something like smoke or steam may help, and I sometimes use a spray as part of my ward/cleansing.
Worship. (Quick note: worshipping deities is not required in order to be a witch). Research! Read about deities, pay attention to what feelings arise. What feels right? What raises a sense of familiarity? Write your prayers, or speak them. Have an altar, leave physical offerings.
Meditation. It’s not always about visualization, it’s about becoming calm and centered. Sit, and pay attention to your senses. Notice how everything looks, how it smells, how the air feels, what sounds you hear. How it feels to be in your body in this place. (I prefer to be truly present in a place, rather than picturing a random beach in my mind).
I hope this at least gives you some ideas of where to start! Witchcraft is all about making it your own, and this is no different :)
mythology aesthetic → isis
⋰ Isis was a major goddess in ancient Egyptian religion whose worship spread throughout the Greco-Roman world. She was believed to help the dead enter the afterlife as she had helped Osiris, and she was considered the divine mother of the pharaoh, who was likened to Horus.
Sigil Crafting
Sigils were the first magic I ever learned. As an artist, symbolism and aesthetic are things that are incredibly important to me. I have used multiple ways of crafting sigils, but I have created my own personal way of creating sigils using a method writers have used in poetry- the stream of consciousness technique.
I put my pen to paper, call upon what I wish to make a sigil about, and let the pen create what I need.
These are the sigils that I use the most frequently (you may use them if you wish).
You may notice that my sigils in the form of arrows. Arrows are a symbolic representation of aiming and shooting for something, and I love the vertically long look because I like to draw these sigils on my forearms.
I created all of these with stream of consciousness drawing.
It is almost like a form of meditation for me. Allowing myself to simply create what I think “focus” or “protection” looks like visually makes the end results beautiful and meaningful for me.
I do have a few running themes. Here are a few symbols I love to throw in.
These are used a ton in my art.
So here is a step by step of what to do-
1. Clear your mind for meditation. (Tip- if you have crystals that symbolize your intent, surround yourself with them. And example would be having a rose quartz for love on you or near you.)
2. Put your writing utensil to your paper. (I recommend using paper before digital.) Have your energy flow from your body to the focus of the tip of the pen/pencil, repeating the intent you wish the sigil to have.
3. Make a first draft of your sigil by allowing your hand to simply move as you think of your intent.
4. Make as many reiterations you wish until you have something you feel satisfied with. (Editing is a big part of writing as well.)
5. After a few tries making different sigils, make a list of your own common symbols you see popping up in your sigils.
And there you have it. If you are not comfortable, try mixing this technique with others to find what works best for you, or simply only use other techniques and make sigil arrows. I think using the look of an abstract arrow helps with directing intentions.
You can also request a sigil from me if you so choose in my inbox, for I shall be making them for anyone who asks for free.
I hope you find yourself using this technique of stream of consciousness to create wonderful sigils.
