S-Park 190324: Hanyu Yuzuru Commentary on Origin Highlights
His commentary can be found here! This isnāt a play-by-play translation, but I wanted to share Hanyuās thoughts on his free skate at Worlds :)Ā
On the 30 second rule in which skaters must assume their pose for the program 30 seconds after their name has been announced lest one point be deducted.
Hanyu: Thereās a 30 second rule, so I did my best to not go over that. I would do simulations in my head over and over, so when I went into it, I knew how many seconds were left, and after I did this how many seconds were left, and then how many seconds were left to gather my emotions, take a deep breath, and by the time I get into position itās just around 30 seconds.Ā
Interviewer: Ah, so you did image training for this?
Hanyu: Yes, I did. In fact, I did the simulation around 10 times in my head. (A/N: btw, he finished his routine at exactly 29.23 seconds at Worlds)
Hanyu: Actually, I was rather surprised that I landed it. It felt good, but perhaps Iād lost/forgotten the feeling of the landing for this competition.Ā
Hanyu: Well, this is fine. Itās a miss. It was a complete miss butā¦Iāll allow it.Ā
Interviewer: So you were ok with this? (A/N: I think?? Couldnāt quite catch what she said)
Hanyu: Is what Iād like to be able to say, at this point.Ā
On his stamina throughout the performance
Hanyu: This time, I was able to maintain my stamina pretty successfullyāwell, successfully in terms of after rehabilitation. Considering that I wasnāt starting from zero, but more from negative/minus, I think I was able to maintain my stamina fairly well. Thatās why I thought if I could just overcome the hardest obstacles of the 4Lo and 4S, I could trust my body to do what needs to be done, and thereād be no problems. So after those two jumps I felt pretty reassured.Ā
Hanyu: When I think Iāve won, I raise my arm and point upwards (i.e. Olympics 2018 and Worlds 2017) but I was not thinking that this time around. I was thinkingĀ āhow tough,ā andĀ āAh, I must not have won.āĀ Ā
On his overall performance
Hanyu: Hm, I still want to become stronger. Well, I think I did my best, but I can do more, bring more. I think I need to become a more Hanyu-Yuzuru-like Hanyu Yuzuru. Because my ideal isnāt coming true.
