Thad fell into the kisses eagerly. But when Dash pushed him back, he was more than a little disappointed. Of course, Dash assured him it could continue after they ran. In fact, he painted the perfect picture of what would happen once they got where they were going and he grinned wide. “Ok ok. I’ll meet you there. Just…” He caught the bag and held it in his arms before meeting Dash’s eyes with a look of concern. “Good luck. And be careful. Please…run at the first sign of trouble..” He took a step towards the door, not taking his eyes of Dash. “It will all work out. I promise. We’ll be ok.”
Dash took a deep breath. In and out. In and out. As he left the room and gave one last look at the boy he trusted most. Dash walked to his parents door standing for a moment desperate searching for the courage in his shaky hand as it knocked on the door. “Mom?” Dash croaked out, waiting for her to open it. In the distance he could here JJ going on, talking to someone he was sure wasn’t his mom and his dad was... well he wasn’t sure about that either. The only thing he knew was if his mom was in there the door was closed and- His mom opened the door just then, looking as tired as ever looking at Dash.
“Yeah, Dashiell?” She asked. Their relationship was tense already. There wasn’t a whole lot he could do to fuck it up any more. But in that moment he saw his dad and a part of him wanted to run without saying it. His dad was always so supportive when talking about girls, he beemed so brightly at Dash when Dash came home and told his dad his secret. He kissed a girl. That’s right. Tiny 11 year old Dash was well on his way to becoming a player when he pecked a Hufflepuff girl right on the lips. His dad patted him on the back, told him that’s what being a quidditch player was about.. or well, something along those lines. Time was a funny thing, it made things so confusing. “Dash?” She asked. Dash was standing in front of her still not saying a word staring at his dad. Then his mom. Then, just as he opened his mouth his eyes began to well up and he couldn’t say a thing. Dash stood in front of them, sobbing like a kid for a moment before he said a word.
“Dash, what’s wrong?” His mom asked, hesitantly reaching her arm out. Dash knew, Dash could break into a tantrum at any moment, she had reason to be hesitant, but Dash didn’t like that either. He didn’t want to be someone his mother was afraid of. Dash was frozen in fear himself though, the words caught in his throat.
“Hey, Dash, buddy, what’s up?” His dad asked, suddenly, Dash had turned his parent’s parental worry into high gear. Dash couldn’t look at them. He needed to say it.
“I need to fucking tell you something.” Dash blubbered out.
“Are you in trouble?” His dad said, instantly switching to his angry parent voice.
“Dashiell, did you steal something? Break something again? You break something every time you come home there is no reason to cry you-” But his mom piped in then, doing some deductive work.
“NO! Not something like that.” Dash snapped.
“Is it bad?” His dad asked impatiently.
Dash nodded. But both of his parents stayed silent. Dash felt like he knew... And they knew... What he was about to say. It just hung between them eagerly waiting to be said. Dash wiped a tear away as his mom touched his should gently.
“Dash...” She said more gently now, but Dash didn’t hear it as gentle. It sounded angry. It sounded like a warning to him that he shouldn’t say it. What isn’t said is never real... Right?
“I’m not... Straight.” Dash said staring at their shoes and backing away as he said it. “I mean not fucking gay but not really fucking straight and FUCK. I fuck dudes sometimes? Shit FUCKING HAPPENS. But I still fuck girls to you know? I do fucking both and just...” Dash’s fear was being replaced by anger as he watched his dad’s face dropped. Disappointment. That’s all Dash could read. Dash was an utter disappointment. “Just needed to fucking say it okay? So now I fucking said it and now... Fuck off and shit. FUCK.” Dash said, stomping off and running out the door.
Once outside, Dash wiped the last of his tears away and looking at Thad. “We have to fucking go. Now.”
