is there any guide to learning the language the foxes used? Or is it just gibberish?

no its just me writing the words loosely and scribbly on purpose. nothing the foxes say is like, necessary to know for the plot or anything. it is the way it is bc i like it to be loosely readable if you want to try and guess

what specifically did emberpelt do?

emberpelt abused firespots and also abused wavecrash as her mentor. she's also just generally unkind with no real allies, so no one in starclan was really advocating for her

she might have been spared the dark forest IF wavecrash was still alive... but wavey is a prophet, a position of some form of authority, so yeah she was not letting her abusive mother in law into heaven when no one was asking for her to be pardoned

If you could go back and change things from earlier parts of the comic, what would you change and why?

so much lol, such is the way of having a long running webcomic you started years ago. i am not the same person i was when i started this in 2020 so there is definitely some taste changes with stuff... there are some very large changes i would make for sure, a lot of micro changes too but the big ones...

firstly, i would do some baseline changes to how firespots and fishpaw meet. its such a big moment and i think meeting after the failed ceremony is good but at the time i was a bit unprepared to write the rest of the scene. it could really use some touch ups that it will sadly never get because im not into editing like that once its been posted for so long.

secondly, whisperleaf was written where i knew he was temporary and i cut a lot of corners with him. i really did not care very much for him until like page 300+. and because of this carelessness, i feel like he is perceived as a much nicer guy than i intended. if i could go back in time i would really make sure his characterization is not just hardass learns to care about someone... because he is supposed to have already done this with fallenscar. im ok with fishwhisker being no.2 in his journey to treat others better... but i do want it to be clear he WAS cruel at times. there was a reason firespots couldn't coexist with him, and i think this needed to be obvious before he died. it would have gone a lot harder imo if we knew whisperleaf would not be spared if he encountered firespots. i also like the idea that whisperleaf is the one who initiates the fight between them. i would have him seek firespots out from concerns about who fishpaw is talking to alone at night, and maybe starclan is dodgy and he thinks he needs to find out by himself before she gets hurt.

this is something i can thankfully make clearer in my side comic Guardian. whisperleaf is there, he is angsty, he is quick to be cruel with his comments. he doesn't interact with wavecrash much in The Exiled, but those two in particular don't really get along and it is a contributing factor to the negative relationship between him and firespots. so we will get to see it in Guardian. but i do hope it doesn't feel like a retcon. it's not supposed to be, i was just rather amateur at writing a few years ago. im still learning but i think i can stick the landing on my ideas a lot better nowadays than i used to

and lastly, petalfishtalon has to become part of the plot. i dont want to say i hate them, i dont, but ough. they are very boring. very little new information happens when they are together. i really do not care for the way fishwhisker has to relay things to petal and talon, due to the fact they are often not present when things are happening to fish. and they are important characters so i dont want to skip their reactions entirely... idk. there is another scene coming up where fish has to relay information again. hopefully it will be the last time their scenes have to be so boring.

at least i know where i went wrong with them, and its because i didnt want to do anything negative with them. i didnt want an angsty relationship. i already have those in the story... i was like, fish goes thru enough as is. and by proxy so do her friends. what if they just had a safe space together and it was cute lesbians. except their scenes ended up not being fluff, just kinda... fishwhisker therapy because idk. i have been in similar rodeos, i was not able to run around and be cute after horrible life events. so i couldn't force fishwhisker to be... but there is middle ground and it wasn't really achieved. my aim got better when it came around for evergreen and fallenscar, but by then the girls had already had a lot of missed darts on the board. its like fine. but i do think i am capable of writing better relationships so it bums me out that i missed the mark on the polycule, at least from my own perspective. im glad it doesn't seem to stop most people from still enjoying them! they are supposed to be cute, and there's still time to make sure they get some good scenes before its over ^_^

what did emberpelt do to go to the darkforest?

basically for being a big asshole all her life, when shes not tormenting children she's being unkind and rude to everyone. she never killed anyone but no one would advocate for her to go to starclan so down she went...

she mentored wavecrash and unfortunately for emberpelt, wavey is a prophet who wasn't gonna forgive the psychological warfare that she and her beloved (firespots) had to endure. and even if it wasn't personally affecting wavecrash or her loved ones, she still would have condemned emberpelt for it

I've been wanting to produce my own comic but I'm stuck on the planning phase so I was wondering, how much scripting and such was solid for The Exiled before you started creating official pages?

just had a loose outline, some character designs, and a lot of passion i've gone a little more into detail in some previous asks (here and here)

fishwhisker and firespots are some olddd ocs that i wanted to tell a story about for a long time, so it had been brewing and i could more or less easily throw together an outline describing how to get from point A to B to C and so forth. Granted a lot of it has changed, I've changed a lot as a person since I started it 6 years ago. Leaving the outline loose and flexible for change was really important I wouldn't have been able to go this far if I was not super passionate about the dynamic between the two main characters and those surrounding them, if you get super obsessed with your blorbos the missing pieces of their stories will come to you eventually. And if they don't, maybe you gotta change em up to make them more compelling to you
