Random Thoughts by *gymdiva*
As I wrap up my assignment for my social media class, I can’t help but to sit back and think of how absolutely exhausting it is to think of all the ways we as a society have to go before we are all truly on the same page. We make claims of being “woke” and not believing in labels or stereotypes but yet here we are, in 2019, adhering to some of the worse society has to offer.
A male decides he’s seen enough harassing of a female and he stands up to the other male(s)? Oh he’s white-knighting. Someone expresses their opinion and Mr/Ms. No Avatar comes running out of the woodwork to badger the person to the point that they delete their account. Don’t agree with how the President is doing? Well then you must hate America!
But are we truly as bad as it feels sometimes? Yes, the creation of anonymity and typically not being called out on outlandish and abusive behavior has created a breeding ground for hate filled posts. But then I look and see how many of us enjoy the simplicity of a floofy puppy not knowing how to navigate a curb. Or a young girl who wants to help out with the water crisis get a celebrity bump and see her dreams come true. I truly believe that all of the unearthing of the dark thoughts and actions comes healing, learning, and growing. We want to do better. We want to get along. We want to understand.
As old generations die, so, too, do their old ideas, ways of thinking, and prejudices. It is up to the younger generations to keep it moving forward until one day they will look back and learn in history class what an internet troll used to be.
