Looking up when she heard someone’s voice, knowing it wasn’t one from inside her head. “Hi.” Dawn greeted, happy to see the doctor. “I’m okay. They won’t let me out of bed though..” She pouted, glaring at one of the nurses passing by.

“They’re only looking out for your best interests, I know it must be boring though,” he said, chuckling a little as she glared at the nurse. “From how you’re looking right now though, I think you’d be fine to have a little walk around if you really want to.”

“There’s–” He cut himself off with an uncomfortable cough, sitting up a little straighter. “Nothing; there’s nothing.” He was starting to become more certain of that now - the temperature overseas was always high, and it was a dry heat. “Michael . . . Sergeant First Class, Curtis Hill, sir.” The title slipped out from habit, not from thought; otherwise, he wouldn’t have given it.

Michael nodded a little. “If you’re sure,” he said, though the man was clearly still unconvinced. He raised his eyebrows ever so slightly at the other man’s response, not quite expecting a full title. He decided not to say anything about it though. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“And that’s what happened.. Don’t feel guilty though, it wasn’t your fault.. I wasn’t listening hard enough.” Dawn said aloud, caressing the creature laying on top of her stomach. She was told to stay in bed, by one of the nurses. Which was really hard for the ten year old who would rather be doing anything else than just lay in bed. Luckily The Cat hadn’t left her side since the incident and she was now purring delightfully. It didn’t hurt, even though there was a big wound on the stomach, because The Cat wasn’t really there. Although Dawn could see her as clear as any living cat.

Michael had come down to the infirmary to check on Dawn. He wanted to make sure she was doing okay after what had happened. He stood in the doorway for a brief moment as he watched her talk to something that wasn’t there before approaching her. “Hello,” he said with a soft smile. “How are you feeling today?”

Feeling the grounds shift underneath her, she drifted in and out of consciousness. Her whole body in agony. She got bits and glimpses of what was happening. Vaguely hearing voices, words she couldn’t grasp. The ‘Angels’ always by her side, always in her head, seemed awfully quiet and the silence made her ears ring. There was just the occasional ‘Nya!’ and purr from The Cat. Walking along with the doctor as he carried her to the infirmary.

It didn’t take long for them to reach the infirmary. He quickly carried her over to one of the spare beds and carefully lay her down. After briefly explaining the situation to one of the nurses there, they brought over some bandages and antiseptic fluid along with a few other bits. He started taking a closer look at Dawn’s wounds, assessing what needed what doing to them. Luckily, nothing needed stitched so he quickly started to work on cleaning her up. “I’m sorry, this is going to sting a lot,” he said softly as he started to clean the gash on her stomach.

Upon hearing the familiar voice, the girl forced herself to open her eyes. Panic written on every feature of her face. “Please..” She started, before taking in the scene. A kind face staring down at her, telling her she was going to be okay. Dawn relaxed slightly, still not able to shake the feeling of doom hanging over her. Wincing in pain, she closed her eyes once more. This time, knowing it was all over.

“You can’t make me go into isolation, I’m a scientist!” That’s when Edward’s reality started to come back to him. His mind cleared and he began to remember who he actually was. A wave of guilt washed over him as he now looked over at the bloodied girl. It was his fault and it made him sick to his stomach. “O-oh dear… oh gosh…” he muttered to himself, leaning back against the wall now before sinking down to sit on the floor. “I-I… I am so sorry…”

Michael glanced back at Edward again as he noticed his attitude seemed to change. He sighed and shook his head, realising he didn’t have enough time to deal with him right now. “This might hurt a little, I’m sorry,” he said softly as he turned his attention back to Dawn before carefully scooping her up into his arms. “You’re going to be okay, I promise,” he whispered to her before heading out of the room and starting to make his way down to the infirmary.

Someone was speaking, far away. As she drifted upon the calming ocean the waves suddenly grew bigger. Shaking her gently. It was clear now, there was a voice. Somewhere in the void of unconsciousness, she could hear it. Though, it was still far away and she couldn’t make out what it was saying. Slowly the girl returned to the land of the living. Her eyelids still too heavy to open. Pain consumed her mind and she moaned. As everything that happened returned in a flash. All the pain inflicted upon her frail body. She whimpered, but remained impassive.

Edward jumped a little when he heard someone enter the room. He let out a small yelp as he was pulled away from Dawn, standing there staring at the man that had interrupted them for a moment before speaking. “I wasn’t finished!”

“Shut up and don’t say another word. You’re going straight to isolation as soon as I can get someone to take you there,” he growled, glancing back at Edward briefly before turning his attention back to the young girl. He let out a small, relieved sigh as he got a small response. “Listen, I’m going to take you down to the infirmary, okay? You’re going to be fine, everything’s going to be fine.”

Michael had been told by one of the other patients that they’d heard screaming coming from one of the rooms. Since he couldn’t seem to find a security guard anyway, he decided to go and find out what was going on himself. He opened the door to the room where the noises had been heard, freezing in the doorway for a moment as he saw the scene in front of him. He managed to force himself to move, dragging the man away from the young girl. He managed to yank the scalpel out of his hand before he could do anything about it before shoving it into his pocket, he could deal with that later. 

He now turned to the girl, his eyes scanning over the various injuries on her body. He knew she desperately needed medical attention, but he needed to try and wake her up first. He put his hand on her uninjured shoulder and gently shook her. “If you can hear me, I really need you to wake up.”

“Don’t go outside,” he said, squeezing his eyes tightly shut. The cold of the floor was seeping in through the fabric of his pants, pulling him back towards reality, but he was still stuck somewhere between the war and Eichen. “What’s the weather?” Perhaps if he asked pointless questions, it would help him solidify his state - that he was in the real world. “And– your name. The weather and your name.”

“Why shouldn’t I go outside?” He asked in a soft tone of voice, trying to figure out exactly what the problem was here. “The weather? It uh... a little chilly, it’s starting to rain a little I think,” he said. “My name’s Michael. Michael Moran. What’s your name?”

Instead of staying home and cowering in his room as common sense told him to, Curtis had gone to work, despite it being the middle of the night (and most certainly not his shift). Plenty of people had called in ‘sick,’ though - probably since it was the night of the 4th of July - and there were definitely a few things for him to do. Unfortunately, what the man was doing now was not work; it was a lot less fun than that. Although he’d thrown himself into his duties, they hadn’t been enough to distract him, and had only stifled his growing anxiousness momentarily. When something fell further down the hall, it shattered the fragile barrier he’d manage to set up in his mind, and he gave in.

Without giving a thought as to who might see him, he leaned back against the nearest wall before sliding down to the ground. His breathing was fast, unsteady, nervous - even though the minefields he’d lost part of his hearing to were halfway across the world, he could have sworn he was back in them again.

Michael was just heading back to his office to finish up for the night. He wasn’t usually here this late but there had been a lot more paperwork recently that he needed to finish off. As he turned the corner to his office, he spotted the man sitting on the floor against the wall. He paused for a moment, not really knowing whether to approach him or not before realising that something must be wrong. He moved over to the man, crouching down beside him, though he left a fair amount of space between them in case he didn’t want people close to him. “Hey, is everything okay?”

“Okay… but don’t tell nobody about it, okay? I don’t want people to think I like you or nothin’. Only Freddie knows you’re my cousin. That’s secret.” Somebody could use it against him - that was Knox’s fear. He wasn’t sure who would have the motive but he wasn’t keen on trusting anyone with much information. Climbing up into an adjacent chair, Knox let out a yawn. “Don’t touch me and don’t be over here and just… only if somebody’s coming okay? - Is there any good stuff about your family?”

“Okay, fine. I won’t tell anybody about it.” Michael would never say it but he couldn’t help but feel a little insulted. He didn’t know what would be so wrong with people thinking that Knox actually liked him, after all they were family. “I won’t touch you, don’t worry. What do you mean? There’s plenty of good things about my family.”

“Exactly.” Vicky sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. “Would you..” She sighed and looked up. “Would you come with me? I know it’s my fault, but..” She didn’t really know what to say, so she just shrugged.

Michael nodded. “Yes, I’ll come with you if you want me to,” he replied softly, giving her a small encouraging smile.

Knox scrunched his nose, keeping his arms at his side as he clenched his fists. He wasn’t mad at Michael, not really, more at himself. “Can… you stay here?” The child grit his teeth as he looked away, unhappy with his own behavior. Michael was evil. Bad. Danger. Trouble. But the alarms and red flags weren’t loud enough to ask his cousin to leave.

Michael nodded. “Yes, of course I can,” he replied with a small smile. He wanted Knox to like him, he really did, but he didn’t know how to do it without doing the things that he’d asked for, which would most likely end up getting him, if not both of them, in trouble.

Once she was sure the bud was out, she bent and picked it up before looking at the staff, see that he was still watching her, “What? You want my bud or something? Or am I allow to throw that away myself?”

“No, I was just waiting until you were finished. Make sure you do actually throw it away though.”

“Look, rules are there for a reason Knox. They’re there to keep everything in order and make sure that everybody’s safe. If I broke them by say, stopping your medication or something, it could result in serious consequences for your health. That’s why I can’t break them,” he said. “I’ll ask about the roommate for you though.”

“Yeah, yeah… whatever. I don’t know why I always ask you stuff ‘cause I already know the answer. Can I at least sleep in here again? I don’t want to go to stupid school… class… stuff…”

"Look, I do my best for you Knox but there's only so much that I can actually do. I'm sorry," he said. He knew that he shouldn't let Knox sleep in his office again but at the same time, he thought it was the least that he could do considering that he couldn't really do much else for him. "Yeah okay, fine. Go ahead."

Vicky sighed, bit her bottom lip and crossed her arms. “I really don’t know.” She walked a few steps down the hall and turned back around. “I should talk to one of the security guards and get it over with..”

Michael nodded a little. “Okay, that’s probably the best idea right now. At least then we’ll know someone will be on the lookout for it.”

She swallowed thickly and looked at him when he stopped trying to press her to put the smoke out, “Thank you…” her voice was soft again and her eyes fell back down to the ground, then to the cig as she watched the smoke curl up into the air. Taking the last drag, Emmy dropped the bud into the dirt and stomped it out, making certain there wasn’t a single ember left before she picked it up and rose to stand on thin legs.

Michael nodded a little. “You’re welcome,” he replied, offering the girl a small smile. He still wasn’t going to leave until after she was finished, at the end of the day there was a lot of damage that a patient could do with a lit cigarette if they wanted to.

“I don’t give a fuck if you staff can see me or not. You don’t fucking care as long as I still have a pulse and you can tell people I’m alive. I don’t give a single flying fuck about people like you who don’t give a fuck about people like me as long you get your paycheck at the end of the week. If you don’t want to see it, then turn your happy ass around, go back into your cushy office and finish your paperwork so you can go home and do whatever the fuck you want because you get to have that freedom. While people like me have to stay trapped here having pills shoved down our throats, have to ask if we can fucking pee, and can’t even chew for as long as we fucking want. Okay? If I have to deal with that shit every day, then the least you can do is let me have one fucking cigarette because I have to go fucking suffer you people regulating my every twitch like I’m a fucking marionette. You think you can do that for me? Because I’m almost fucking done anyway.” she growled before taking another trembling drag on her fag and holding her breathe, trying to let the warm smoke calm her before she exhaled.

Michael stayed quiet as he allowed the girl to rant at him. He didn’t blame her for her reaction, everything she said was true and personally, he didn’t really have a problem with the patients smoking as long as it was outside and someone was keeping an eye on them to make sure they didn’t hurt themselves or set anything on fire. After a brief moment’s thought, he decided to just not argue with the girl and let her continue. “Fine, okay. Carry on, just don’t get caught again.”
