Can AP’s contribute as community leaders?

Meaningful community involvement has been linked to enhancements in student achievement and quality of educational experiences. Assistant principals are positioned to build effective partnerships yet remain understudied in the leadership preparation field. This qualitative study investigated how assistant principals (N = 9) serving historically marginalized populations conceptualized and realized community leadership amidst prescriptive measures embedded within the Title I School Improvement Grant. This study highlights how the collective conceptualization of community leadership is complex and deserving of additional consideration. Findings indicate that school leaders desire more effective and sustainable partnerships, yet policies and knowledge gaps present unique challenges to change efforts.

One day after prosecutors confirmed Sandra Bland’s death will be treated as a murder investigation, officials from the Texas Department of Public Safety announced they are investigating alleged edits to dash cam footage of Bland’s traffic stop.

It’s a little before 8 a.m. when Mathias Schergen pushes open the side door at Chicago’s Jenner Elementary Academy for the Arts.

He walks down the hall toward the office to sign in. It’s the same routine he’s had as Jenner’s art teacher for nearly a quarter century.

“It’s gonna be a good day,” a colleague calls out. “It’s a good day.”

They hug. It seems like a typical Friday. Except it’s not.

After 23 years at Jenner Elementary, Schergen is retiring.

“Is this your last day?” asks a first-grader.

A self-described child of the ‘60s, Schergen has a gray man bun and a contagious laugh.

Even on his last day, there are still art projects to finish. He’s got students cutting wood and painting and assembling a miniature city.

Schergen leaves behind a rich legacy at this school. He’s won grants for art projects. He turned an empty classroom into a museum. He’s pushed his students to make art about their lives. And he was awarded a Golden Apple — the most prestigious teaching award in Chicago.

Commentary: America can’t talk about segregation if we can’t say how it was created

How is it possible that we could have a more candid public debate about the role of race in shaping communities and restricting opportunity in 1968 than in 2015?

Part of what has changed since then is no doubt that memory has receded. The practices and policies that created poor black neighborhoods — redlining, blockbusting, urban renewal and federally subsidized white flight — were much more immediate in the 1960s. The problem isn’t that those practices remain ubiquitous (although they have not entirely disappeared), but that their effects endure. And that is the thing worth remembering.

Interesting take in EdWeek about principal voice. Principals will have less voice w/ removal of advocacy as central component in new ISLLC standards.

Principals may not have the voice that their teachers think they do. They may actually just be speaking for someone else and feel as though they have no voice at all.

Despite the federal government’s historical effort to ensure educational equity via policies targeting issues critical to U.S. urban cities, a transformation has taken place in the discourses shaping educational policy solutions. While policies targeting educational equity have not completely vanquished, they have been largely re-written by discourses of efficiency and accountability. Informed by Hajer’s notion of policy vocabularies, this article highlights how the written inscription of equity-related discourses within documents used to guide leadership preparation may shape the ways in which programs consider the construction of curricula focused on issues related to equity.
