Seth Aaron Fleury, 23, was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature after biting off Kayla Hayesâ lip when she refused to kiss him after telling him she did not want to get back together.
Hayes, 20, is still healing from the physical and mental injuries inflicted on her that horrific night on October 21, 2017, but has bravely opened up about what she went through in the hope she can inspire others to seek help if they are victims of domestic violence.
âThis was the day that a piece of me died,â Hayes wrote on Facebook. âSitting in a puddle of my own blood with the majority of my lip laying on my leg, my whole mouth on fire, confused and terrified, I didnât know how I could ever show my face again. At that point, wishing that those very seconds would just be my lastâ I wanted to give up for good.â
On the night of the assault, Fleury met up with Hayes to discuss their relationship. âI was not there to get back together with him, however, I was there for him to right his wrongs,â Hayes explained.
Kayla was forced to undergo emergency plastic surgery and received over 300 stitches.
The damage caused by the attack left her with limited movement around her mouth and permanent scarring.
She added: âMy surgeon had to cut all around my face and cheeks to bring the two sides of my lip together because it was torn off completely. I find myself insecure over the scars, itâs very hard as a young woman especially, but I have to remember that they donât define me. I can define my scars or have them define me, they show my story and what I have overcome. A piece of me died after the attack, at times I feel a great deal of sadness but now when I think about that day, I know Iâm a stronger person today.â
At Greenville County Courthouse, where Kayla saw her attacker for the first time since the horrific ordeal, just the sight of him left her âmortifiedâ and ânervousâ.
Kayla said: âI have been told Seth did it intentionally and wanted to leave his mark on me for my next boyfriend. Seth was very controlling and treated me like property not a girlfriend, he was very manipulative. He showed no remorse in his eyes whatsoever. I believe he knew what he did, and he meant to do it. I feel the sentence has given me closure now that I know heâs not walking the streets.â
Kayla started a Facebook group called Rise Above dedicated to helping people see the early signs of abuse, talking about how to get out of toxic relationships, and really just to show that there are better days ahead.
